The Best Way to Treat Sunburn Naturally

by KR Bautista on Jul 26 2021
Sun protection is something we all need to take seriously: we’re often reminded to wear SPF, bring a hat, and stay in the shade whenever possible. But sometimes, our sun protection isn’t perfect. For instance, we may forget to reapply sunscreen, or skip it altogether, or we’re not wearing a formula that’s strong enough. Bottom line: sunburn happens sometimes, and it’s never fun.  And like any wound or irritation on our skin, time is going to be a factor. However, there are natural ways to help speed up the healing process. With summer in full swing, we’re going to break down what to do in each stage of sunburn. 1. Sun Exposure It’s probably no surprise to anyone that sunburn starts with sun exposure.  And sun exposure can happen fast. If you’re in direct sunlight without sunscreen, sunburn can actually occur in as little as 15 minutes!Catching sunburn early on can be tricky though, because it’s not as prominent as it will be in the next few hours. That’s why prevention is so important when it comes to sunburn. So always wear SPF, even if it’s for a quick walk with your dog, or to step out and grab your mail! 2. Here Comes The Burn Typically, sunburns aren’t too obvious at first, but they’ll probably make their presence known in the next 2 hours. As your skin cells on the surface become inflamed, skin appears red, and feels irritated and hot to the touch, marking the onset of sunburn. In the first few hours of sunburn, the most important thing to do is hydrate and take measures to cool down, since your skin is going to draw fluids from the body to heal itself. 3. Sore, Burning Skin After about 6 hours, sunburn will typically become sore and may sting more intensely, and blisters may form as the immune system protects the skin. Your skin may also feel more sensitive to heat, especially in a hot shower or bath. For the next few days, use lukewarm water and soothing ingredients to ease irritation: Chamomile Chamomile’s been used for centuries in folk medicine for their soothing effects, high antioxidant content, and sweet, delicate scent. Aloe Vera Aloe vera may be one of the most classic ingredients for treating sunburn, and for good reason! Aloe vera, with its hydrating and anti-inflammatory properties like aloin, can soothe and cool sunburn effectively. Green Tea Green tea is another classic ingredient for soothing inflammation. It's skin-friendly and packed with antioxidants like tannic acid and theobromine, which can boost damaged, irritated skin. 4. The Peeling After about 48 hours, most sunburns will feel significantly less uncomfortable than those initial 6 hours as the skin sheds off those dead, damaged cells to reveal the new ones underneath. Unfortunately, that means your skin is going to peel a bit, and it may be tempting to pick at the dead skin. However, experts recommend that you don’t do this, as it may risk more irritation. Instead, allow the process to ride itself out and support it with a good moisturizer. For a lot of people, this is the hardest phase, not only because the process is so close to being over, but the urge to pick can be intense. Your skin is working double-time to heal itself, so be patient with it and be kind to yourself.

Natural Radiance Unveiled: 5 Daily Practices to Cultivate Bare-Faced Beauty

by KR Bautista on Jul 19 2021
Natural radiance is the main goal of Emani, it has always been to find makeup that’s gentle and enhances and then some. Makeup that doesn’t just sit comfortably on the skin, but actively nourishes it to promote healing and natural radiance. But we know it takes more than makeup to build skin confidence, so we want to do more. Today, we have five ways to help you cultivate your own healthy glow and enhance your natural radiance, showing you how to make it shine with or without makeup. 5 Tips For Cultivating Natural Radiance: 1. Drink More Water (Seriously) We know you’ve heard this one a million times, already, but for good reason! Water is crucial to keeping your skin healthy, because when the body is dehydrated, regular repair functions are less efficient, and wrinkles become more pronounced as the skin sags from lack of moisture. To keep your skin plump, radiant, and healthy, water is absolutely essential.  And make sure to drink throughout the day! We often believe that we can just chug 8 ounces in one sitting, but this is actually a mistake: when your body receives a sudden onslaught of hydration, it won’t be able to absorb it all at once, and you’ll inevitably pee it out. So make sure to hydrate steadily and consistently. 2. Eat More Plants We’re a big proponent of a plant-based diet, not only because it’s kinder to animals & the planet, but because of the benefits it gives your body! Fruits and vegetables are loaded with vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and antioxidants--nutrients your skin needs to stay happy and glowing. And even if you’re not vegan, simply incorporating more leafy greens, berries, and citrus fruits will make a huge difference in your health, and you’ll see it reflected in your natural radiant skin. 3. Wear Sunscreen Every Day You can stock up your skincare regimen with every anti-aging elixir on the market, but this won’t matter if you’re skipping sunscreen. Did you know that the #1 cause of premature aging is ultraviolet rays? Not only does sun exposure increase your risk of dark spots and uneven skin tone, but it can also contribute to wrinkles, fine lines, and saggier skin.  Sunscreen protects the skin from UVA and UVB damage, helping to maintain a youthful and vibrant appearance with regular use. When choosing a sunscreen, we recommend mineral-based or "physical" sunscreens over chemical sunscreens. Chemical sunscreens, like those containing oxybenzone, can potentially harm sea life and coral reefs. 4. Sweat It Out Ever notice your skin has a bit more of a glow when it’s covered in sweat? Believe it or not, sweating can do wonders for your skin by increasing circulation and raising endorphins. Just one more reason to get out and move! Whether you jog, cycle, do bikram yoga, or simply relax in a sauna, always make sure to shower immediately afterward. 5. Use Mineral Makeup So many products out there claim to be radiant and gentle on skin, and lo and behold, it still makes you break out.  Instead of traditional foundations, try using a mineral-based formula. Mineral makeup is exceptionally gentle on skin and suitable for those with high sensitivities. And some even prevent blemishes with their nourishing properties!

Dry or Dehydrated Skin: Which One Are You?

by KR Bautista on May 11 2021
Now that spring is in full swing, the sun’s starting to shine again and the flowers are blooming. But when your skin is feeling dull and dry, it can be hard to enjoy the season. And what’s even worse? When no moisturizer seems to work! Don’t worry: your skin is not just difficult. In fact, you may be treating your skin for dryness, when in fact it could just be dehydrated.  And in this article, we’re giving quick tips on how to know if your skin is dry or dehydrated, and what you can do about it! The Fundamental Differences So you may be thinking: how can there be a difference between dry and dehydrated skin? Is there really a difference? While there are several similarities, there are certainly some fundamental differences between dry and dehydrated skin. When you have dry skin, this is simply the genetic structure on your skin: there are fewer sebaceous glands on the body, so your skin tends to produce less oil overall. One of the plus sides to dry skin is that breakouts are less common. One of the down sides, however, is that your skin may age more rapidly if not properly cared for. Dehydrated skin, on the other hand, is more of a temporary condition caused by outside factors; specifically, a lack of water. Anyone can experience dehydrated skin, even if their skin type is on the oilier side. The bottom line is this: dry skin means less oil, and dehydrated skin means less water. Still not sure which one you’re experiencing? Here’s a little trick. How To Determine If Your Skin Is Dry Or Dehydrated? So here’s a quick way to tell whether you have dry or dehydrated skin, and it’s known as the pinch test. While this isn’t a surefire way to determine what’s going on with your skin, it can give you a better perspective overall. For the pinch test, gently pinch a bit of skin that’s easy to gather but still a little taut, such as your cheek, forearm, or the back of your hand. If your skin takes a few moments to bounce back, it is likely that you are experiencing dehydration. If your skin snaps back into place instantly, it is probable that you are not dehydrated and may simply have dry skin. Other signs of dehydrated skin include dark circles under your eyes, fine lines and wrinkles with heightened sensitivity, and itchiness.  On the other hand, dry skin tends to involve flakiness and dullness, redness, and irritation. Additionally, those with dry skin may also experience conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. Whether it’s dry or dehydrated, there are ways to nourish and soothe your skin. And once you know which condition you’re experiencing, you can determine which methods to go by. What To Do For Dry Skin When you have dry skin, moisturizing is the name of the game. Treating your skin with moisturizing emollients is going to help your skin retain water more effectively, and can preserve a more youthful look in the long run. Nut and plant-based oils make wonderful moisturizers for dry skin, including coconut oil, avocado oil, and jojoba oil. Hyaluronic acid also does wonders by penetrating the skin with hydration. In fact, hyaluronic acid holds up to 1000x its weight in water! Aside from skincare, sleeping with a humidifier can also keep your skin from drying out at night. If your dry skin’s frequently accompanied by irritation, redness, and rashes, it’s always a good idea to contact a dermatologist about the best course of action, as you may have a deeper underlying condition. What To Do For Dehydrated Skin If your skin is dehydrated, your body’s dehydrated. So above all, make sure you’re drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Incorporating foods with high water content is also useful here, so go for snacks like watermelon, cucumbers, celery, and strawberries when you’re feeling peckish. That being said, you can also hydrate your skin with ingredients like glycerin, aloe vera, and ceramides. Ready for happier, healthier skin? On our blog, you’ll find countless strategies and tips for feeding your natural glow. {{SHOW ME MORE BLOGS LIKE THIS}}

Causes of Acne

by KR Bautista on Apr 29 2021
When we were teenagers, acne was a fact of life. If you didn’t have at least one day when you were fumbling around your locker looking for concealer, you were a lucky teen, indeed.  But what about when you experience acne in your 30s or your 40s? Wait a second, I thought I was done with this! As frustrating as it is, adult acne is actually extremely common. According to one study, as much as 22% of women in the United States experience acne, while men make up only 3%. And while some women are lucky enough to find that “miracle product” for their skin, it simply doesn’t work like that for everyone. There are a number of reasons why you’re experiencing acne in your adult life, and we want you to know that it’s not because you have poor hygiene, and it’s not your fault. If you’re experiencing persistent acne, consulting your doctor or dermatologist is always the best course of action. However, it may be possible that a lifestyle factor is the cause of your acne, meaning it could be something you have control over. Common Causes Of Acne Let's discuss common acne causes and how to regain your skin's clarity! Remember: Clearing skin takes time, but it's valuable to progress gradually and learn your skin's future responses. Hormonal Changes If you’re experiencing blemishes along the jawline that are deep and feel sore to the touch, it’s very possible that you’re experiencing hormonal acne. Hormonal acne occurs when there’s an increase in androgens in the body, leading to the sebaceous glands producing more sebum and the pores increasing in size. And while hormonal acne is often associated with adolescence, women can experience it well into their 30s and 40s. It’s normal for anyone to experience hormonal acne, but if you’re experiencing it frequently, it’s heavily encouraged to consult your doctor or dermatologist. Consulting a professional can uncover your hormonal imbalance's source. Medications like birth control or prescription retinol might effectively address it. You’re Over-Washing Your Face In the past, people believed that maintaining a clean face was crucial to prevent acne, and they would blame insufficient washing if acne was present. However, this is actually not true; in fact, over-washing your face can strip your skin of the natural oils that keep it healthy and hydrated. And when your skin becomes stripped, this can actually cause the oil glands to kick into overtime, resulting in excess oil and clogged pores. Diet During your teenage years, you might have received warnings that chocolate could cause acne. While not entirely accurate, studies suggest specific foods, especially carb-rich ones like bagels, bread, and chips, might exacerbate acne. And while the research is limited, it has been suggested that dairy may induce acne in some individuals. Mucous-producing foods, like this one, can strain digestion, especially for lactose-intolerant individuals, potentially triggering cystic acne. Suspect dietary link to acne? Skip the food in question to gauge impact on skin. Experiment wisely. Remember: while your acne may not immediately clear up, it’s still a good sign if it doesn’t worsen! Stress If you’ve been feeling extra stressed out lately, stress may be behind your worsening breakouts. While stress isn’t necessarily a direct cause of acne, it certainly isn’t helping it. Research indicates stress delays wound healing, including acne recovery. Prioritize relaxation for healthier skin. When pimples heal slowly, they remain on the skin longer, risking the chance of only getting worse. Handling stress isn't simple—during big projects or life changes like moving, feeling overwhelmed is natural. But during these times, practicing stress management strategies can be extremely helpful. Prioritize self-care during stress: meditate, exercise, indulge in hobbies. Ensure ample sleep. Your well-being matters. When in doubt, talk to your physician. The team at Emani is all about helping others to live a healthier and happier life. Leave a comment, we'd love to hear from you.

6 Ways to Adopt a More Eco-Friendly Beauty Routine

by Michelle Doan on Apr 13 2021
Eco-friendly: It's not a secret, the beauty industry hasn’t always been great to the planet. Makeup's past includes plastic waste, harmful chemicals, animal exploitation, and irritating ingredients. These contribute to environmental damage. The sustainability movement has expanded into makeup and skincare, promoting eco-friendly practices. With more eco-friendly brands available, adopting an environmentally-friendly beauty routine is easier than ever. This Earth Day, we have 6 tips for a sustainable, eco-friendly lifestyle. Start with one or two sustainable habits instead of overwhelming yourself with too many changes at once. Gradually add more habits as you go. 6 Ways To Adopt A More Eco-Friendly Beauty Routine 1. Recycle The Empties We realize that this one’s a given, but it’s worth reminding ourselves to recycle our empty makeup containers. This is because even if we do normally recycle, it’s more so with food containers, where recycling is more accessible. But when you run out of makeup, it’s all too easy to just toss it in the bathroom wastebasket without thought. If you find yourself doing this, consider placing a bin in your bathroom just for empty beauty containers. Nowadays, there are eco-friendly, even dual bins with a section just for recyclables! 2. Sustainable Tools Of course, sustainable beauty isn’t just about the makeup itself; brushes and applicators are also a factor. If you find yourself going through makeup brushes a little too often, try investing more in ones that are built to last. And to minimize your plastic waste, brushes with a wooden handle make a great alternative; the same goes for hair brushes, too! In addition to brushes, you can replace cotton pads with reusable ones made of terry cloth, and there are plenty of long-lasting makeup sponges available as alternatives. 3. Stop Using Makeup Wipes Makeup wipes can be super convenient for those nights when you’re too tired to wash your face, but we hate to say it: makeup wipes do far more harm than good. Face wipes are non-recyclable products that contain plastic, and they’re responsible for 93% of sewage blockage. On top of that, over 9.3 million wet wipes are flushed down toilets every day. And to make matters worse, face wipes aren’t very good for your skin, either. Most face wipes, even those claiming to be “gentle,” contain harsh chemicals that strip your skin of its natural oils. Plus, dragging a wipe across your skin can irritate and damage the delicate capillaries in the skin. Instead of makeup wipes, try using a double cleansing method to remove makeup, dirt and sweat. To do so, start with an oil-based cleanser or cleansing balm, and follow up with a foaming, water-based or gel cleanser. And for those nights when you just need a quick fix, a reusable cotton pad with micellar water makes a great replacement for wipes. 4. OPT For Reusable Bags Reusable shopping bags have gotten a lot more popular in the past, but they’re not just for groceries! If you’re already bringing reusable bags to the supermarket, expand this practice taking them when you’re shopping for makeup. Plus, there are bags available in all shapes and sizes, so when you’re traveling, you can replace your disposable plastic bags with reusable ones. 5. Choose Cruelty-Free If you haven’t already, start opting for cruelty-free beauty. While more brands are turning to cruelty-free practices, there are still all too many that follow conventional methods of testing. And in these cruel practices, chemicals in cosmetics are tested on rats, rabbits, cats, dogs, and monkeys, who spend their entire lives suffering in cages. These methods are savage and outdated, as there’s technology now that allows us to test without torturing innocent creatures. When you choose cruelty-free, you’re not supporting these practices, and you’ll find that the formulas are more gentle while still effective. 6. Use Mineral-Based SPF Out of all the things you can do to prevent aging, sunscreen is the most recommended. However, sunscreen has a dark side: most conventional sunscreens use a chemical formula, which uses chemicals like oxybenzone and homosalate. And while these chemicals are effective at preventing sun damage, they can be incredibly damaging to our planet and our bodies. Residual sunscreen in oceans harms coral reefs. Oxybenzone damages reefs, while homosalate disrupts endocrine system. The next time you shop for a new sunscreen, try a mineral-based or “physical” sunscreen. These sunscreens protect your skin from the sun with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which are gentle on skin and aquatic life.

The Foolproof Way to Apply Concealer

by KR Bautista on Mar 25 2021
At this moment, two things are certain in makeup: The natural, “no-makeup” look is more in than ever before, and concealer formulas have evolved to offer coverage to the fullest. But why, then, is under eye concealer so difficult? If you’ve struggled with creating a look that’s not cakey or riddled with creases, no matter what concealer you use, trust us: you’re not alone, and there’s a way to fix it. In 5 simple steps, we’re going to show you how to create a foolproof under eye concealer look.  No caking.  No creases. Just gorgeous, flawless coverage. Step 1: Start With A Hydrating Primer Before you even begin to apply your concealer, consider the canvas you’re applying to; AKA, your skin. Our under eye areas are not only delicate, but unlike the rest of your skin, they have no oil glands! Under-eye areas are typically drier, making wrinkles and creases more noticeable with concealers. Luckily, prepping your skin with hydration beforehand is going to work wonders for your makeup wear. Using rich, thick eye creams at night is great for skincare, but they can feel heavy when applied under concealer. That’s why it’s important to stick with a lightweight, serum-like consistency. Our Perfect 10 Serum Moisturizer blurs, smooths, and moisturizes the skin, making it ideal for your eyes. Step 2: Choose The Right Concealer We know there are a lot of concealers out there, and we know all too well that many just don’t  do your skin any favors. This is because when it comes to concealer, it’s all about texture. Your concealer’s texture is going to have a direct effect on how much crease you’ll end up with. It may be tempting to use those thick concealers with promises of full coverage, but if they have a dry, inflexible texture, the pigment won’t even matter. However, choosing a creamy concealer that actually moves with your skin is going to do you wonders, and big bonus if the formula contains vitamin C for a boost of brightness! That’s why we always recommend our HD Corrective Concealer + NIacinamide.  Step 3: Order Matters Believe it or not, the order in which you use your concealer depends a lot on the type of foundation you’re using, because it’s going to seriously impact the way your concealer and foundation blend together.  The biggest thing to avoid is applying a liquid over a powder, as this is a surefire way to wind up with caking and creases. But don’t worry, this step is actually pretty simple! Here’s the rule of thumb:  If you’re using a powder formula, like the Flawless Matte Foundation, apply your concealer first. If you’re using a liquid formula like our Hydrawear 12HR Liquid Foundation, apply concealer second. And as tempting as it may be, try not to apply foundation to your under eye area; this extra layer can leave a cakey look when concealer comes in! Step 4: The Application Now, for the application. To apply your concealer, we especially recommend the use of a damp beauty sponge for streak-free blending, but a concealer brush can work too! Just keep in mind that you may need to do a little more blending if this is the case. Using your ring finger, apply your concealer along your under eye area in small dots, and with your sponge, gently dab along the spots to push in the concealer. Pro tip: you don’t need to apply concealer all the way up to the lash line for good coverage. Instead, blend up toward your lash line as needed. Step 5: Set To Perfect Now, the final step may be the trickiest, and that’s the powder setting. While setting is crucial to long-lasting wear, it’s easy to overdo it, and this is often when the creases come in big time. The trick, however, is to use a powder that’s either a shade lighter than your skin tone, or transparent like our Bye Bye Shine and stick to the mantra “less is more.”  Because remember: you can always build up your coverage, but you really don’t want to start over! To apply, take your damp sponge once more, and lightly dab it into your setting powder. Similar to what we did with the concealer, gently dab along the under eye area to push in the powder. A little goes a long way! Now that you’ve set to perfect, you’re ready to take on the day with eyes that look bright, open and awake! Go get ‘em, gorgeous!

5 Ingredients Your Lips Need Right Now!

by KR Bautista on Mar 11 2021
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but there are just some things that everyone wants. And one of them is soft, supple, kissable lips! However, revive your lips with nourishing ingredients for smooth, plumped skin. Also, say goodbye to chapped, cracked lips with our expert tips. Here are 5 natural ingredients that your lips will love, and spoiler alert. 1. Vitamin E Vitamin E is one of those ingredients you’ll almost always see in a lip balm formula, and for good reason!  It is a valuable antioxidant in lip care. It moisturizes and nourishes, making it ideal for cracked, irritated lips. Evidence suggests that vitamin E boosts circulation and promotes skin renewal. This is crucial for repairing environmentally damaged lips. And thanks to vitamin E’s anti-inflammatory properties, it can have a near-instant soothing effect. 2. Apricot Kernel Oil People highly regard apricot kernel oil, which is pressed from apricot pits, as a top skin oil. It is closely resembles sebum, providing essential hydration and lubrication. Also, as our lip lack sebaceous glands, apricot kernel oil offers much-needed moisture they can't produce on their own. Apricot oil is also high in antioxidants your skin thrives on, like vitamins A, C, and E, in addition to linolenic and oleic acid to keep your lips extra soft. 3. Sunflower Extract Sunflowers contain vitamin E, which helps protect lips from free radical damage, and they are rich in a unique antioxidant called sesamol, which minimizes sun damage. Phytosterols, found in sunflower extract, also contribute to keeping the lips plump and glowing, while enhancing skin barrier function. 4. Rice Bran Rice bran is one of those ingredients that you’ll find in tons of our products, thanks to their versatility in products and their gentleness on skin. However, nourish skin cells with nutrients like vitamins and antioxidants keeps the skin looking young and healthy. People know that nurturing skin cells with nutrients such as vitamins and antioxidants plays a crucial role in maintaining youthful and healthy-looking skin. On top of that, rice bran helps deliver moisture to the skin while helping to improve the skin’s elasticity while evening out the complexion. In addition, it may even help reduce signs of aging! 5. Castor Seed Oil Castor oil is cold-pressed from the seeds of the Ricinus communis plant, and makes a fantastic source of omega fatty acids to help hydrate the skin. It is more than a great moisturizer, though! Omega fatty acids like ricinoleic acid help retain adequate moisture levels, while encouraging tissue repair and skin cell turnover. This nourishing oil also acts as a humectant, meaning that it’s going to encourage moisture retention even in dry weather conditions, and creates a thick, protective shield around your lips. What’s your favorite ingredient for keeping your lips healthy and soft? Leave it down in the comments!

Foundation Guide: Never Choose the Wrong Shade Ever Again!

by KR Bautista on Mar 02 2021
Foundation shade: we know it’s been said, but we’ll say it again: We’re home more, these days.  And while it can make the use of makeup feel less necessary, it’s actually the perfect time to experience beauty just for yourself. Because we all could use more self-care! And enjoying your own beauty can mean trying a new look, experimenting with formulas, or using makeup as a way to break the daily at-home hum-drum. But we’ll admit it: there are still some things you just can’t do at home. For one, trying a foundation shade before buying it.  And when you feel like all you can do is guess online, this can make buying any new foundation feel like a risk. Luckily, we’ve got just the thing for you! Today, we have the foolproof guide to finding your perfect foundation shade—from the comfort of your home. And it’s so easy and reliable, it might just become your go-to strategy for good! Your Skin Type You may be thinking: texture? I thought we were choosing a shade! But here’s the thing: when it comes to finding the perfect foundation, the texture is just as crucial as the shade.  You see, it won’t matter how perfectly coordinated your foundation is if the formula gives you the wrong kind of coverage or finish. That’s why companies nowadays offer so many different types of formulas: to cater to all the different types of skin! If your skin is more on the oily side, it’s generally best to stick with a formula that will absorb excess moisture. A powdered formula, like our Flawless Matte Foundation, will keep oil in check throughout the day with the help of high-impact minerals, while rosemary and grape seed extract help promote balance. If you have normal or dry skin, on the other hand, a liquid formula, like our Hydrawear Plus will give you that flawless coverage you want without giving you that “dusty” finish. Determining Your Undertone Now, onto shades, for real this time. When you choose your shade, two factors will be taken into account: skin tone and undertone.Skin tone is, quite simply, the general area in which your skin falls on the spectrum, which brands typically refer to as light, medium, and deep or rich. And most people know their skin tone with just a quick look.Undertone, however, isn’t quite as obvious. Undertones refer to the degree of cool and warm-toned pigments in your skin, and can be either cool, warm, or neutral. You may already have a good idea what undertone you are. For instance, you might’ve noticed you look stunning in gold jewelry, while silver just looks...off. Or maybe you can rock a magenta top, but that peach bridesmaid dress hasn’t seen the light of day since your cousin’s wedding. And this is all because of undertone! Still confused? We’ve got you! Your undertone is something you can determine all on your own at home. One of the most tried and tested methods is one we already mentioned: jewelry pairing. Try holding up some gold jewelry to your skin, then some silver. If gold has you glowing, you’re probably a warm undertone. If the silver makes your skin pop, you’re a cool undertone. Another method is grabbing something fuschia—whether it’s a scarf, a hat, or even a lipstick, and compare it to something else in a vibrant orange or coral. If the fuchsia looks best, it means it’s complementing the bluish-pink tones of your cool undertone. But if that orange is really doing something special, it’s loving the olive in your warm tone! And if you’re wondering: what if I look incredible in everything? One: you’re lucky and we’re jealous. Two: you just might be a neutral undertone, meaning you have an equal balance of both pigments. Checking the color of the veins around your wrists can determine your undertone. Greenish veins indicate a warm undertone. If they’re true blue, you’re cool. The Selfie/Swatch Test Comparing a photo of your skin to online swatches ensures an accurate shade match. But let’s be clear: the days of forearm swatch tests are over! Using your arm as a shade reference can be quite unreliable, and here’s why: The skin on your arms probably doesn’t match the skin on your face. The difference in shade between our arms and faces is due to varying levels of sun exposure. And even your entire body does happen to be one singular even shade, you won’t get an accurate read without the right lighting. Comparing your arm to swatches on a screen in a dark room distorts your skin's true shade. So what’s one to do? Take a selfie in some good old fashioned natural light! Wait for a clear day, and take a selfie with no makeup (but don’t skip the sunscreen) and use this as a reference when you choose from the swatch line-up.  And important tip: don’t take the selfie in the late afternoon or evening. Sunlight in the later part of the day, or “golden hour,” is going to have a significantly warmer, more orangey tone to it, and while it’ll make your skin look gorgeous in photos, it’s not going to be very helpful for finding your shade.

And those with sensitive skin don’t need to worry about squalane clogging their pores, as it’s non comedogenic and easily absorbs into the skin. 9. Calendula Calendula officinalis, also known as “calendula” or “marigold,” packs a ton of antioxidants and flavonoids, but it’s also a gentle ingredient that may contain soothing properties, making it suitable for those with eczema. 10. Titanium Dioxide & Zinc Oxide We know how much damage the sun can do on our skin; that’s why using sun protection is crucial. But we also want to make sure that our SPF is safe for our oceans and reefs. Also, this is where titanium dioxide and zinc oxide come in! These two minerals tend to be the active ingredients in physical sunscreens, as they protect our skin from the sun without causing irritation. These are also key in mineral foundations, which are far more gentle on the skin than traditional foundations.

Taking on 2021 With Emani Ambassador Jamie: An Interview on Morning Routines, Momming, and Taking on a Whole New Year

by KR Bautista on Feb 10 2021
You may know Jamie Haley on Instagram as “Life of a Boy Mom,” where she showcases fashion, food, hair care, photos with her three adorable boys, and even crafts!Despite having a jam-packed schedule, Jamie’s gained a strong hold on time management and balance. But after 2020, we all learned a thing or two about ourselves, and we We sat down with Jamie to ask her about her morning routines, what she learned from 2020, and how she plans to take on 2021! We all know that the beginning of the new year is the perfect time to set new goals, but for a lot of us, the pressure is daunting! How do you set and manage your new year goals and resolutions? Do you use any kinds of tools (planner, vision board, bullet journal, etc.)?“I always use a planner with some special color-coding and different colored post-it’s for lists each week! I love it!” How important is a morning routine for you? What’s your morning routine like, and how do you handle the more hectic days? “Morning routines are SO important, especially with my kids and getting everyone ready! When we are rushed, I tend to focus on just making my skin clean & even toned.” How has your beauty/hair routine changed since the start of 2020? “I have definitely started using less makeup and focusing on taking care of my skin! Since we don’t go out much, I don’t wear makeup every day as I used to, but I do still try to wear it a few times a week because I enjoy it! Hair has also been more of a focus and trying to find ways to do it that are quick, easy and look good!” 2020 made us all a little more aware of how we dress in our homes. As someone who’s passionate about fashion, have you found a go-to outfit that keeps you productive at home while still feeling your best? “I love my jeggings that are both comfortable and also make me feel like I need to get things done! I also have been liking tops that are more versatile and can be worn with leggings or jeans. Most of the time though, I’m wearing leggings!” We understand that essential oils are a big part of your daily life! Can you share with us some of your favorite blends, and when you like to use them? “My go-tos for essential oils are Thieves (spicy-blend) for helping with keeping the air fresh and clean, peppermint, lavender & lemon! I am always diffusing oils in our main living areas and I use products with essential oils for almost everything—soaps, laundry, cleaning, etc.” Can you share with us any wisdom you learned from 2020? This can be a simple mantra or sentence, a strategy you learned, something someone told you, or anything else that comes to mind! “Just do the best you can—these days, everything looks different and can be more complicated. We just have to adapt and do the best we can with what we have!” We’re still remind all too often that balance gets trickier when you have children! What advice can you give new moms in 2021 about balancing work life, motherhood, and self-love? “You have to make time for yourself somehow!!! I’ve realized that taking just a few hours to do something for me—whether that’s read a book, do my hair and makeup or grab a coffee and go for a drive—makes a huge difference in my mood and mindset. You have to love yourself most to be your best self for your kids and family.” Can you tell us one thing from 2020 you’re planning to keep in 2021? “I’m going to keep enjoying more family time! Having my husband home more and spending time as a family has been a huge blessing!”  Can you tell us one thing you’re ready to let go of in 2021? “I’m ready to let go of negativity and anxiety—this year I’m life one day at a time and keeping things in mind to look forward to!” Finally, name one specific thing that makes your daily life easier.  “Routines! Any type of routine helps from morning routines with the kids to makeup and skincare!” If you haven’t already, check out Jamie’s instagram @lifeofaboy_mom for some everyday life inspiration!

Self-Care for Busy Women

by KR Bautista on Jan 21 2021
At this point, the concept of self-care is no foreign thing; it’s become a widely discussed topic in tutorials, articles and TV shows everywhere. And yet, self-care is no easy thing to master, especially when you’re just too busy. For women who are used to a day that’s “go, go, go,” the idea of slowing down and taking time just for yourself can be quite alien, if not impossible. But we’re here to tell you it doesn’t have to be that way. While self-care can be a full day of spa treatments, it can also be as simple as a few mindful activities. Here are 6 ways you can practice self-care every single day, no matter what it throws at you! 1. Shower Meditation Let’s be honest: morning showers have always been great. Not only are you surrounded by hot, soothing water and steam, but it’s one of the few times of the day in which you’re truly alone. So why not make the most of this moment?Next time you’re having a morning rinse, try a quick shower meditation! There are tons of meditation guides on the internet for you to try, but here’s a simple one to start with: Close your eyes and allow yourself to clear your mind, simply enjoying the feeling of the water around you. Focus on the way your breathing feels in this moment. Is it filling your chest? Is it going down to your belly? Can you feel the air itself as it travels through your body? Now, try controlling your breathing. Slowly inhale for 5 seconds, then exhale for 5 seconds, and hold your breath for 5 seconds more before repeating the pattern. Allow yourself to carry out this exercise for a few minutes, before coming back to yourself in the shower. Take a moment of awareness before stepping out and getting dressed. 2. Make Your Beauty Routine For You It’s easy for the act of getting ready for the day to feel like a drag. I need to shower, get the kids dressed, get lunch together AND I need to put on my makeup?!Look at it this way, though: your beauty routine is one of the few times of the day when it’s just you and your reflection, so make the most of it in any way you can!One of the best things you can do for yourself at this time is choose makeup you’re not only excited to put on, but will enjoy wearing all day long! For instance, a primer that’s silicone-free and uses lots of skin-loving ingredients is going to greatly help you foundation wear, and it’s going to make your makeup feel a lot more comfortable throughout the day. And choosing a lipstick with a nourishing formula will both glide on beautifully and nourish your lips throughout the day.Makeup aside, your morning beauty routine is a great time to consider the day ahead of you, and the bathroom mirror is a fantastic place for morning mantras! Here are a few examples you can start out with. Try writing them down on sticky notes and leave them in places you know you’ll see them in the morning: I will not worry about the things I can’t control I am allowed to take up space I trust that my faith in the universe will gift me with all that I need in life I like who I am becoming I add something special to this world 3. Don’t Forget To Move! If you spend a lot of your day at your desk, don’t forget to move every once in a while!  It can be very tempting to strap in at your desk and just focus on the project until it’s done, but this could actually just hurt your productivity in the long run.Movement is so crucial to us as humans, as it promotes blood flow, muscle building, self-care, and for joints and bones to strengthen. And all of this is key to healthy brain function! There are plenty of strategies and tools to help you get up and move a little throughout a busy work day: a growing number of individuals are adopting fitness trackers that go on your wrist, but even a reminder on your smartphone every hour will do the trick! 4. Incorporate Aromatherapy The space you work in absolutely matters, and sometimes it comes down to the little things--in this case, the way your workspace smells. If possible, we recommend that you invest in aromatherapy while you work, whether it’s a diffuser with some essential oils, a scented candle, or some incense. We recommend citrus and peppermint while you work, as they can help revitalize the senses and help you feel energized. 5. Create A Beginning & End-of-Day Ritual This tip is especially for those who work from home, but it’s paramount to those who work anywhere.Sometimes, work feels like it’s all over the place: sometimes you’re running late, sometimes you have to start work with a not-so-great morning behind you, and you’re just not in the right headspace. Then 8 hours later, you say you’re finished for the day, then you ease into your couch, browse your smartphone, and hey look: you have an email from work. You should just answer that now, right? And the next thing you know, it’s like you never really got off! When you have a ritual to your work schedule, though, you have a clearer head, whether you’re on or off. Before you begin your work day, some of the following steps can build a cohesive beginning-of-day ritual: Have coffee Turn on your computer Check your calendar Set up any aromatherapy for the day Check emails once and at a designated time (big timesaver)  Likewise, an end-of-day ritual gives you a clear stop to the work day, and makes it easier to unwind and recharge. This can include the following: Review tomorrow Clean off your desk Have a glass of water Change into more comfortable clothing 6. Designate Some Evening Skincare Time There are some things we were able to get away with when we were 19, but just won’t fly now, and one of those things includes the way we removed our makeup. These days, the swipe of a makeup wipe won’t cut it. Not only are you still leaving residue behind, but this does nothing to help your skin recover from the day!Instead, take 10 minutes out of your evening to focus on a skincare routine; one where you thoroughly cleanse your face and incorporate hydrating, nourishing, and anti-aging products into your skin. This is also a great time to fully unwind and enjoy some quiet time before bed.And the best thing about a skincare routine? It’s only as simple or elaborate as you want it to be! For many women, a skincare routine involves a double cleanse, followed by a toner, sheet mask, treatments and night cream. And for many others, it’s a thorough cleansing followed by moisturizer.  If you’ve never used a self-care skincare routine before, starting out simple may be the best way to go, but just make sure your skin has some kind of hydration on it before bed. Emani Ambassador: Jamie Keeps Her Beauty Routine Convenient & Kind with Natural Ingredients

by KR Bautista on Jan 14 2021
If you’ve ever had to navigate the balance between caring for yourself and keeping everything running smoothly, you’re not alone! Prioritizing self-care can be a challenge, especially when you work a leadership role that can be demanding.  As a mom of 3 young boys, for example, Jamie finds balance in a few ways: for one, she incorporates wellness and self-care into taking care of her family. Finding Balance: Jamie's Self-Care Journey and Beauty Routine “Essential oils are a HUGE part of my life and my family’s lifestyle! A few of my favorites are Lavender, Frankincense, Lemon, Peppermint & Lemongrass. I also use them as part of my skincare routine (geranium, tea tree, lavender with jojoba oil serum).” But it’s also important to take some time exclusively for you; after all, we take better care of those we love when we’re feeling our best. And for Jamie, a great way to practice this on the daily is through her beauty routine. “For makeup, I start with cleansing & moisturizing my face, primer, concealer & foundation, fill in eyebrows, contour with bronzer & apply mascara! I try to keep it quick & easy and just enhance my natural look.” Customized Skincare: Jamie's Journey To Healthy and Nourished Skin But when Jamie plans her beauty routine, she’s not just thinking about the way it’ll make her look, but how it’ll affect her skin. “My skin is oily/combination, and especially gets dry during the winter months! I have had breakouts from using products containing harsher chemicals in the past.” And Jamie knows that self-care through skincare doesn’t mean using expensive products just because it feels indulgent, self-care through skincare means using products that cater to your own needs. “Finding a brand that fits your skin’s needs is the first step! Emani Cosmetics works for mine with perfect primers and foundation that works with my skin to enhance it!” Efficiency and Quality: Jamie's Approach to Multifunctional Beauty Products Good ingredients foster a healthy glow, smooth the skin, and help soothe irritation (without causing more). Jamie’s favorite ingredients are the ones that do these things and come from nature...we’re right there with her! “I was very excited to see that the Perfect 10’s list was short and included ingredients that I recognized! I was especially happy to see Lemongrass essential oil and aloe vera!” It can be safely assumed that for most of us, multifunctional beauty routine is a must. And besides ingredients meant to help your skin, Jamie puts a big emphasis on efficiency & flexibility.  “Everything needs to be quick & easy! I used to use so many different products between skincare and makeup but now I have narrowed it down to products that contain all of the clean, healthy ingredients that I need but in fewer steps!” Sometimes, it can be difficult to find products that save time without cutting corners on quality, natural ingredients. At Emani, we’re here to help anyone who’s encountered those roadblocks, because first and foremost, makeup should promote confidence in your skin. Our skin is our largest organ and absorbs everything that is applied to it, and goes into our bloodstream! By using cleaner products, we are reducing the number of chemicals entering our bodies! If someone has tried a clean beauty brand and wasn’t happy with it, I’d say to give Emani Cosmetics a chance and they will be pleasantly surprised at the quality and coverage that these products supply while still being good for your skin!

Clear Skin Once and for All: Make 2024 Your Year!

by KR Bautista on Jan 04 2021
The new year means new opportunities to reflect on what we’re thankful for, and it’s a great time to consider the things in our lives we want to improve. And if this includes your skin, you’re not alone! Whether it was the stress or a sudden change of habits, it’s completely understandable. However, it doesn’t have to be this way, especially now that we’re in the swing of a bright and shiny new year! Let’s make 2024 your year for clear skin. You can start with a few tips that are easy to try (and stick with) to get your complexion on the right track. Here are six simple resolutions for fresh, clean and clear skin in the new year! 1. Come Clean Let’s be honest: 2024 gave some habits a good shakedown. For some of us, it looked like less makeup, or none at all--what’s the point when you’re at home all day? But for some of us still, makeup remained a fixture in our daily lives; maybe even as a source of normalcy. But whatever’s been on your face during the day, make sure it all comes off before bed. Whether it’s a full face of makeup, some skin tint and lip gloss, or even just your daily skincare, it’s still crucial to cleanse your skin at night. We personally love a double cleanse. This consists of a face oil, cleansing balm, or micellar water to melt away products and excess oil, followed directly with a foaming cleanser. This will leave your skin squeaky-clean and ready for your evening skincare routine. 2. Seriously, You're Not Drinking Enough Water... We’ve said it before, and we’ll definitely say it again. Keeping hydrated and staying hydrated is one of the best things you can do for your body. Did you know your skin is the largest organ in the human body? It’s true! When you keep the rest of yourself holistically healthy, your clear skin will absolutely follow suit. Hydration is one of the key methods of keeping your skin in balance. Whether your breakouts are caused by too much dryness — or too much oiliness — a healthy dose of hydration can work like magic. Keep track of your water intake throughout the day. Don’t forget that fruits and veggies are a healthy source of hydration, too! 3. Don't Skip The Moisturizer Moisturizing goes hand-in-hand with hydrating. Help lock in that skin-balancing hydration from all that water you’re drinking with the perfect moisturizer for your skin. You can apply a lightweight cream or serum morning and night, depending on how it works for your actual skin type. Plus, it will go a long way in helping your skin look supple, glowing, and of course, nice and clear! 4. Consider Your Caffeine Whoever renewed their love for coffee this year, raise your hand. During a time in which so little is taken for granted, some of those morning rituals held a lot more weight than before. And if coffee didn’t already have an extra-special place in our hearts before, holy moly. As much as we love a cup o’joe, though, it’s important to keep in mind how it might be affecting your skin. While coffee can certainly keep you alert, it can also spike your cortisol, aka, “the stress hormone.” When cortisol levels increase, oil production in your sebaceous glands may heighten as well, which can worsen your chance of breakouts. Now, we’re not saying that you need to give up your morning cup (we sure couldn’t), but maybe consider the amount you’re consuming. For instance, do you really need that 2 pm latte every Wednesday? And if you’re looking for a lower-caffeine option, there are some great alternatives! For instance, green tea is packed with antioxidants that your skin will thank you for. 5. Quit Picking! Pick, pick, pick...you find a new blemish on your face and immediately start poking and prodding and trying to pop it. Yeah, we know it can be hard to resist, and seeing those oh-so-satisfying YouTube channels and Instagram accounts filled with pimple-popping videos definitely doesn't help. Instead, commit to leaving those blemishes alone this year. Your skin is designed to heal on its own. Picking can only lead to scabs, scarring and ultimately make matters worse. 6. Radical Defense To achieve clear skin, consider protecting it from environmental damage, including free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules found in places we encounter every day, including the air we breathe and the foods we eat. And when they come in contact with our bodies, they try to stabilize themselves by linking to the atoms and molecules in our skin. This creates oxidative stress, and it’s what you see when metal rusts, or when an apple or avocado turns brown. Imagine this happening to your skin! Luckily, we can combat free radicals every day! How? Through antioxidants! Antioxidants in plant-based foods like kale, blueberries, cacao, wine, green tea, and spices counteract free radicals for better health. 7. Sun Protection Some sun exposure is good--it raises endorphins and boosts vitamin D production! But like all good things, you don’t want too much. UV rays penetrate skin, damaging elastic fibers, altering DNA, and causing premature wrinkles, making them a major skin hazard. Get with the SPF program this year and prioritize a sound sunscreen routine for healthier skin.. Look for sunblock with an SPF rating of at least 35 or higher. Yes, you need to use it every day. Futhermore, even now, in the middle of January. Yes, your skin will thank you for the lack of sun damage to your newly clear complexion! Using a primer or moisturizer that offers protection from damaging free radicals can also go a long way in keeping your skin healthy and glowing. Holiday Survival: Life Hacks & Cool Strategies

by KR Bautista on Dec 13 2020
Holiday Survival: Ah, the holiday season. It’s the time of year that many of us spend 11 months anticipating. Spending time with family, shopping for gifts, and cooking big meals make it a time that’s filled with happy memories. But for some of us...yikes! Statement: The holidays can be stressful, but with proper holiday survival strategies, you can navigate through them smoothly. Shopping and cooking feel like more of a hectic hassle than a heartwarming seasonal event, and maybe your family is...not exactly what you want to be dealing with. And even for those of us who love the holidays, the holiday survival stress can still kick in, especially in 2020! So what can you do to deal with seasonal stress? Take a deep breath, focus your mind, and read the following. Here are five handy ways to help you get through the holiday season unscathed. 1. It's Okay to Stick to Your Comfort Zone The holiday hassles may leave you out of all kinds of sorts. You might find yourself feeling anxious, irritable, or even depressed, and that’s why it’s so important to make time for things that help you feel comfortable. Even during the  holiday survival stress , try not to change too much of your routine. If you wake up at the same time every day, keep your schedule as close to normal as possible. Go to the coffee shop, the gym, or wherever you have regular errands at the same time you normally would. Need a break from your family? Make plans with friends as an excuse to get some time away. 2. Keep It Simple At this time of year, the last thing you want to do is add to your stress levels. This is the time to minimize other potential stress in your life. Allow yourself to stick with meal options that are healthy and nutritious, but can be done quickly. Try out different meal or grocery delivery services to save yourself even more time. Some brands even have free trials to test them out so you can make sure it’s right for you. Try multitasking by cleaning up or cooking while watching your favorite show. Have lots of holiday shopping on your list? Be on the lookout for online sales. This is the time of year when you’ll find all kinds of discounts, so don’t overwork yourself on traditional sale days like Black Friday, especially when you don’t find anything you’ll absolutely love. Emani is all about simplifying & streamlining wherever we can. Multi-purpose products like the Miracle 7-in-1 Primer, which functions as a face serum and as a makeup primer! Fewer products, less of a time commitment, and less stress! 3. Stay Mindful In a society that’s always go, go, go, mindfulness is the key to happiness and a clear mind. Don’t scarf down your meals in front of the TV, savor them with loved ones. Take a moment every morning to consider all the things in life that you’re grateful for. And if you don’t meditate, now is a great time to start.Start out with only a few minutes per day at first, just sitting still in a quiet space, focusing on your breathing and clearing your mind. Many people report that once they start meditating, their anxiety and stress levels drop significantly. Plus, by starting now, you’re already getting a head start on New Year’s resolutions – assuming more mindfulness is what you’re hoping to find in 2023. It’s a win-win! Allow yourself time to take a step back and focus. 4. Self-Care Is Self-Love During the season of giving, we’re all so focused on taking care of others. But what about yourself? More than ever, when health needs to be a #1 priority, it’s super important to take some quiet time for yourself. It could be as simple as a hot bath, a face mask, or a few episodes of your favorite Netflix show in the evening. If you can get out of the house, try going for an early morning walk or go for a run. It doesn’t take much time, and it will help you feel so much more grounded and calm. And take it from us, spending some time trying out a new makeup look is a great way to unwind. 5. Listen To Your Gut We don’t often listen to the signals from our body that tell us to slow down. But much like we learn to listen and respect what others need, we need to learn how to listen to ourselves. Start paying close attention to your stress levels. Know when it’s time to take a break. If you need to set up boundaries with those particularly difficult family members – maybe no discussion of politics at the dinner table? Or avoid nosy prying into your personal relationships – set them up, and hold firm. Pay attention to what your body needs. Don’t let yourself get so busy that you’re missing out on meals or much-needed sleep. If you’re hungry, take a break and fix yourself something to eat. If you’re tired, excuse yourself for a quick nap or breather. The bottom line: don’t lose track of what you need. It may be the season for thinking about others, but that’s no excuse to put yourself last. What are your secrets  for the coming holiday survival by keeping cool, calm, and collected this season? Holiday Season: Five Gift Ideas

by KR Bautista on Dec 01 2020
With all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, it’s no doubt one of the most challenging times of the year for maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle. But it’s all the season where feeling your best is crucial! And of course, we no doubt want to look our best, even if many of us are spending the holidays at home. That’s why it’s more important than ever to do our best to maintain a lifestyle that’s healthy, clean, and kind to the environment. And this is a lifestyle we fully believe in at Emani. And when you’re living a healthy lifestyle during the holidays, why not share it with the ones you love? That’s where the holiday season gifts come in!We put together a list of five gifts ideas for all the names on your list. From vegan beauty to sustainable faves, there’s something for everyone. 1. Healthy Holiday Treats The holiday season is known for all the decadent, delicious foods; all too often, though, they’re the kind of foods that tend to leave you feeling sluggish and bloated. Instead of loading up on sugary sweets and fatty meals, you can promote wellness through a plant-based treat basket!Put together a gift basket of some organic, low sugar snacks. Dark chocolate, of course, is always a fav, and you can make it extra seasonal with flavors like peppermint or cranberry, but pomegranate makes a great twist, too!Winter fruits like oranges and pears make wonderful gifts, as well, and medjool dates have a flavor that’s comparable to caramel, making an extra sweet treat.Organic herbal teas can make a simple, yet elegant gift that can offer some much-needed calm from seasonal stress, and can make a great gift for yourself, too! 2. Sustainable Alternatives For Single-Use Plastics  The rise of single-use plastics is one of the biggest challenges in improving our planet’s welfare, leading massively to landfills and endangering aquatic life. And it’s something many of us contribute to multiple times a day. Plastic shopping bags, styrofoam to-go cups, and single-use plastic wraps are just a few examples of unnecessary waste we create every day.Going completely sustainable overnight is a daunting task, but all of us can at least reduce our plastic usage with just a few changes, and you can help your loved ones make a few switches for the holidays!A set of insulating travel mugs are great for the frequent coffee or tea-drinker in your life. Metal straws or bamboo cooking utensil sets are great, too. Are you a lover of DIY and handy-crafts? Stitch some reusable shopping totes to gift to friends - everyone appreciates something handmade! 3. Vegan, Cruelty-Free Beauty The holiday season makes the perfect opportunity for gifts that make your loved ones feel confident and beautiful. But a lot of brands take advantage of this by peddling products filled with chemicals and cheap fillers. No one wants to give the women in their lives a sub-par product that may irritate their skin!So if there’s a major beauty lover on your shopping list this year, why not gift them their own specially curated Emani beauty bundle?Try picking up a primer or a few of our Eyeshadow Trios or Mosaic Blushes. They make great stocking stuffers and since they will work for a variety of skin tones and complexions, so they’ll really work for anybody on your list.A few of our vegan brushes also make a much-appreciated present for any beauty maven to open up. You can even try one of our ready-to-go kits,. This bundle features our mineral-based Trio Brow Color. Whoever you gift it to, they’ll be so happy to have new products to play with - and you’ll feel good knowing that it’s all clean and healthy. 4. Ethically Made Home Goods Whether it’s furniture, textiles, children’s toys, or pet supplies, we don’t always think much about where our home goods come from. And yet, they play a massive role in the quality of our homes, and in more ways than you might expect!Synthetic and plastic products can off-gas, impacting your home's air quality.Thankfully, there are lots of safe, clean and healthy options out there - and most make wonderful gifts! In addition, look for housewares made from natural or recycled materials, from ethical companies with sustainable, fair-trade practices.Organic sheets and plush, responsibly-sourced towels make perfect gifts for anyone on your list. Hey, any excuse to relax during the holiday craziness right? 5. The Gift of Charity When stuck for ideas, a donation in someone’s name will always be appreciated. The perfect gift for someone who has everything or specific tastes and interests. You’ll never have to worry about anything harmful making its way into your loved one’s home. It’s also an amazing way to help support a message of clean, toxin-free living. Gift ideas to embrace a clean, healthy lifestyle during the holidays. What healthy, sustainable goodies will be topping your shopping list this season? And what’s on your wishlist?

Emani Ambassador: Staying Positive This Season, Featuring Elizabeth!

by KR Bautista on Nov 10 2020
Taking Flight: Discover Elizabeth's Strategies for Staying Positive as an Airline Attendant Traveling might not be on everyone’s holiday agenda this year, but for Elizabeth, it’s her full-time job! As an airline attendant, Elizabeth works to help passengers, ensure safety precautions, and serves as a key member in keeping the flight smooth and staying positive this season. It’s a demanding job at any time of the year, but with the global pandemic, she and her crewmates have to work even harder onboard. During such a hectic, often-stressful tie, we look to the people in our community who know how to stay focused and staying positive, so we got to ask Elizabeth about her own strategies! What’s it like to work as an airline attendant during the Holiday season? How have things changed since the pandemic began? It’s a little stressful, but it’s nice to know that you’re bringing people together. Things have changed, people are required to wear masks, service is limited, there are fewer flights, cleaner aircraft’s, and flights have been capped for social distancing. What are some of the biggest challenges you face when working? People not following instructions. What they don’t understand is that there is a reason for every rule and it’s all safety-related. While experience surely comes into play, do you personally have strategies that keep you calm during stressful or turbulent flights? I know that turbulence is the same thing as bumps on the road, just in the air. So I make sure I secure myself and pray that we hit smooth air soon. How important is morale with your crew? How does the crew keep up morale when working together? It’s very important, and we brief before the start of every trip and communicate how we plan on tackling the day. Do you get homesick on longer shifts, or is it worth it to be able to get some new scenery? If more so the first one, how do you cheer up when you miss home? I like being in different places but sometimes I do miss being home. Usually, to cheer myself up, I get myself some comfort food! When you do get home, is it mostly a time to unwind, or do you find yourself just as busy with other tasks/errands? I feel like I’m super busy with tasks but sometimes I have to listen to my body and rest. Depending on my schedule I have to prioritize, but I always listen to my body. It’s definitely hard to keep up with my tasks at home if I’m working a lot of hours. Some months are busier than others In difficult/challenging times like these, are there any strategies you use to stay positive? I meditate before going to bed, which usually involves breathing exercises and complete body relaxation. I try to exercise as much as possible, do things I enjoy and keep myself surrounded by positive people. Not all trips go smoothly: there can be headaches with security, anxiety in the terminals, and schedule complications. Do you have any advice for staying positive when traveling gets stressful? Give yourself enough time and go with an open mind. Things go wrong, mechanical problems happen, weather happens, TVs and wifi sometimes don’t work and these things you can’t control. So instead of getting upset, prepare yourself with stuff to do in case things do happen. Bring a book, make sure your phone is charged, bring snacks and food, and always carry a sweater or a blanket in case it gets cold. Prepare for what can go wrong and don’t take it out on people who have no control. You have to learn how to roll with it by staying positive. Also, don’t book your connections too close!

As a Busy Photographer & Mom of 3, Molly’s Learned How to Embrace & Cultivate Her Radiance Social media has vastly transformed our culture of beauty; sometimes in amazing ways, but we recognize the ways in which it can blur our view of what a “real woman” is supposed to look like. And while more voices have been raised against toxic presences and non-inclusive body image, it’s mostly directed to adolescent & young adult women. But what about women past 30? Or 35? Or 40?Because sometimes, you’d think social discounts our presence altogether, as if we aren’t on the platform (spoiler: we are).It can make us feel like we don’t exist, that our self-image doesn’t matter as much, or as if we’re just expected to have it figured out by now. We’re here to tell you that you don’t need to have it all figured out yet and that you are completely allowed and entitled to feel your most beautiful; this is the time in your life to cultivate, and the time in which you’re destined to become your most radiant self. Molly's Journey to Radiant Skin: Overcoming Skincare Challenges at 35 As a busy photographer and mom of 3 girls, this is how Molly hones her ultimate beauty at 35!“In my 20s I had no real beauty routine. I wasn’t committed to any particular brands or products...I had no idea how to take care of my skin.” Like so many of us, Molly had a rocky start with skincare and didn’t have much learning to go off of.“There were many nights I went to bed with my makeup still on. I didn’t listen to my mom telling me to start taking care of my skin when I was younger. And the sunburns. Oh my! I definitely have sun damage.”Despite this start, Molly’s made significant progress on her path to natural radiance, and it started with the simple intention of taking care of herself!“Now that I am 35, I take the extra few minutes in the morning and evening to make sure I do my beauty routine. I am aware of what my skin can tolerate, what makes it react, and that consistency is key.”But as with most new changes, we tend to face new challenges, and our skin is no exception!“The one thing I have had to overcome is adult breakouts. I would get a lot of painful breakout areas around my mouth, chin, and jawline. Once I nailed down what was causing it and started to really focus on self-care, I have felt much more myself. I stick with products that make my skin look its best.”Molly has gotten to know her skin a little at this point, and through some trial & forgiven error, she’s learned that gentle ingredients are the key.“My skin tends to be on the drier side. In the past, I have gone through many products for my skin that have made me break out, have a reaction, or make matters worse. Being aware of ingredients and being consistent with safe and effective products makes a big difference.” Molly's Simple and Effective Beauty Routine: Achieving Natural Radiance with Emani Products And when she looks for skincare with gentle ingredients, Molly believes in products worth committing to.“I have been using the Perfect 10 primer for a couple of years now and I am not stopping anytime soon. It is lightweight and non-irritating which is great for my sensitive skin. "The perfect 10: hydrates, sets makeup, and refreshes. A must-have for busy moms and photographers. Flawless makeup, guaranteed."”But of course, when it came down to finding the ultimate key to good skincare, it wasn’t in a bottle.“For myself, as a mom of three in my mid-30s, your kids' needs tend to come first for many, many years. Whether you are a mom or not, we cannot pour from an empty cup. Taking care of ourselves needs to be a priority. When you take care of yourself, you will see your confidence grow. The source of confidence is what we do for ourselves not what others do for us.”Molly views beauty not as a scale or form of pressure, but as a reflection of good health and taking care of herself, because that’s how you become your best, and it’ll make you better at caring for those you love. And when you take car“I feel my most beautiful when I have taken time to slow down and do something for me. I do love some fresh and simple makeup, clean hair, and getting out of sweatpants.” So What Does Molly’s Beauty Routine Look Like? “My beauty routine is the same most days and not over complicated. I stick with the Emani Perfect 10 serum and the Hydrawear Plus Foundation. To brighten under my eyes I use a concealer about 2 shades lighter. I love using products I can use on many areas of my face just to keep it simple. My go-to hack is to use a bronzer and highlighter on my eyes as eyeshadow. Then use those same products on my face to bronze and highlight. I love a cream blush since my skin tends to be dry. I will even pop that same cream pigment on my lips. Fill my brows, swipe on some mascara, and done!”Emani Perfect 10 Primer Serum Demo by Molly Watson

Blue Light: What It Does to Our Skin, and What We Can Do About It

by KR Bautista on Sep 08 2020
Shedding Light on Blue Light: How Your Screen May be Affecting Your Skin Blue Light: As the world of skincare has evolved into a truly sophisticated field, we’ve built a greater understanding of aging and how to prevent it. And experts have learned that of all aging factors, sun exposure is major. But as we’re spending more time indoors, now may be the time to learn about another light source that’s damaging your skin. And you’re looking at it right now: your screen! Read on to learn how it may be affecting your skin, how concerned you ought to be, and what you can do to prevent photodamage. What Is Blue Light, and Why Is It Different? It’s said that 90% of signs of aging are caused by sun exposure. But what about the light from our screens? Surely it’s not as damaging as the sun, right? Well, that’s potentially a “yes and no” question. A range of different-colored light rays makes up all visible light. Among visible light rays, it holds high energy levels, akin to certain skin-damaging UV rays. And while it isn’t necessarily as high-energy as UV rays, research shows that it’s much more penetrative. Trials suggest too much exposure to screens like phones, computers, or tablets may harm eyes due to frequency and intensity. Can Blue Light Really Damage My Skin? Research ongoing, but consensus suggests blue light might indeed affect skin aging. According to one commonly-cited peer-review from the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, it was indicated that blue light exposure caused an increase in swelling and pigmentation, while a 2018 study from the Journal of Biomedical Physics & Engineering concluded that blue light exposure can cause oxidative stress, especially amongst those with a tendency to browse the web at night.  What’s more, is that increased exposure of blue light can also be confusing to the skin. This is because blue light is known to promote wakefulness: when it hits our skin or retinas, our bodies take it as a signal that its daytime. Staring at screens late may disrupt circadian rhythm, hindering cell turnover and causing skin issues. How To Protect The Skin From Blue Light So how can we prevent our screens from ruining our skin? Here are a few strategies. 1. Go Into Night Shift Mode While many individuals have reported success with trendy blue light blocking glasses, there’s a far simpler solution: most computers and phones now have a built-in “night shift” mode, which turns down the blue light levels in your screen’s display. To minimize the exposure and oxidative stress, cut back on nighttime screen time. 2. Antioxidants As mentioned before, one of the factors that make light rays so damaging is that they can cause oxidative stress, and while reducing exposure is going to be the most effective means of prevention, antioxidants are a great addition to anyone’s skincare routine, as they’re known to help lower oxidative stress. Some of our favorite antioxidant-rich ingredients include sprouted red clover, rosehip extract, and vitamin E. 3. Don’t Forget Your Sunscreen Blue light protection's rising popularity hints at a surge in specialized skincare products. Needless to say, many individuals are concerned about blue light! But while blue light shows potential for creating sun damage, it pales in comparison to the side effects you can experience from overexposure to the sun. Conclusion For this reason, it’s crucial that you use a form of sunscreen every day! Preferably a mineral-based sunscreen, which is a lot safer for our oceans than chemical sunscreens. No matter how closely you follow the advice before this, it’ll mean nothing if you’re not protecting yourself from the sun.

5 Ways to Keep Your Skin Dewy & Hydrated, Even During the Hottest Days

by KR Bautista on Jul 14 2020
With June officially behind us, summer is quite far from over--for many of us, the heat has only begun! And while the summer is a period filled with fun, sunshine, and splashes, it can be a challenge to enjoy the festivities when your skin is barraged with extreme heat, humidity, and sun damage. If summer feels like the worst time for your beauty routine, it’s time to take it back! Here are 5 tips to keeping your skin looking dewy & hydrated even with the sun beating down. 1. NEVER Skip The Sunscreen We know that this one has been brought up a lot, but there’s a reason for that: applying sunscreen on a regular basis helps minimize damage to your skin caused by the sun.And it’s no secret that the sun’s rays while doing so much good for us and our planet, can also inflict significant aging factors to our skin when we don’t protect it.UV rays penetrate the skin and cause damage to collagen, which is one of the main building blocks in the tissue and provides elasticity. When collagen wanes over time, the skin tends to become saggy and loose. There are a few potential ways to restore collagen levels in the skin, but when it comes down to it, the most effective method is prevention. When looking for the right sunscreen, keep the following in mind: Keep your skin type in mind! Not all sunscreens are universally formatted, so make sure that the ingredients are for you. Meanwhile, sunscreens containing silica are well-suited for oily skin, and those with dry skin will benefit from formulas made with oils, glycerin, and aloe. Start with an SPF of at least 30, but keep in mind that no formula can go higher than 50. 2. Exfoliate  If you feel like none of your products are penetrating the skin, you may have some excess dead skin on the surface. Luckily, nothing does the trick like a little exfoliation! And to be clear, we’re not talking about the physical scrubs you might have used in your teens. While physical exfoliants like sugar scrubs may help slough off some dead skin, it’s not the most gentle or effective method to achieve dewy & hydrated skin.Instead, we’re talking about a chemical exfoliant, normally one or more AHAs and BHAs, which shed off dead skin cells, and instead of scrubbing or scratching them off, these exfoliants gently break down the bonds which keep the cells attached. Some of the most popular chemical exfoliants include salicylic acid, glycolic acid, and lactic acid. If you’re new to chemical exfoliators, it’s recommended to limit its usage to 1-2 times a week, and because AHAs and BHAs tend to make the skin a little photosensitive, it’s especially important to wear sunscreen--never forget rule #1to have a dewy & hydrated skin! 3. Lowering The Shower Temperature Hear us out--we’re not asking you to give up your hot showers and baths!Did civilizations like the Aztecs and Romans practice bathing in different water temperatures for specific effects? This tradition continues in modern societies such as Japan, Russia, China, Turkey, and Iceland. And as it turns out, water temperatures do affect our bodies and make our skin dewy & hydrated.Hot water (98-104 degrees F) opens capillaries, increasing blood flow and aiding digestion and circulation. Frequent hot showers can dry the skin and may contribute to flare-ups, according to clinical studies. Meanwhile, cool water (66-80 degrees F) closes the capillaries to decrease blood flow, which can help ease inflammation.Experiment with lowering the shower temperature to a more tepid or cooling level during hot temperatures. Pay attention to how it makes your skin feel during and after. 4. Moisturize Staying hydrated is essential for your skin's health.Moisturizing is one of the most important steps in a skin care regimen, and during the summer when hot weather dries out every surface (including your skin), it’s absolutely essential--especially at night when your skin is working to repair itself. Also focus on the type of moisturizer you’re using, as well; as a general rule, lightweight, water or glycerin-based moisturizers are the most ideal, as they’re less likely to clog the pores the way oil-based moisturizers can. Hyaluronic acid is also a fantastic hydrating ingredient, as it helps deeply penetrate the skin to deliver moisture.Aside from using a good moisturizer, staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water is crucial for maintaining skin hydration. 5. Stick With Lightweight Makeup Formulas You can apply the same concept of using lighter formulas to other parts of your beauty routine, such as your foundation step. Does your high-coverage foundation struggle in the summer? Does it clog pores or melt off in the heat and humidity?Switching to a lightweight or hydrating foundation in hot weather improves skin circulation compared to thicker, mattifying formulas. When choosing a lightweight foundation, look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, bamboo extracts, and aloe vera for hydration. What are some of your favorite summer skin-saving tricks? 5 Steps for Stunning Eyes

by KR Bautista on Jul 03 2020
It’s not just what you buy, but how you apply it! Your stunning eyes are one of the most captivating features about you, whether you think it or not! Unleash your unique gaze and effortlessly enhance your eyes to captivate and draw attention. Discover the keys to effortless beauty now! Feel gorgeous, prepared, and empowered with these 5 easy tips to make your eyes look stunning. Get ready to take on your day with confidence!Choose the tips that make you feel your best and enhance your beauty. Use one or all of them to achieve stunning eyes effortlessly! 1. Go Easy On The Brows! If your brows steal the spotlight, consider toning down your eye shading to let them shine. Embrace your leading ladies with effortless style! Brow powders and gels are easy to overuse, so keep an eye on how much you’re applying. Avoid applying brow product in the inner corners of your eyes to prevent a heavy-handed effect and blocky-looking brows. When applying brow product, start at the arches and focus on the tails first for subtle definition. Fill in empty spaces with short strokes, working your way inward. 2. Be Delicate With Concealer If you ever feel like the skin around your eyes tends to come off as cakey, it may be that you’re applying too much concealer. While it’s a tempting step to layer on, an excess of makeup can look far more noticeable than dark circles.Make sure that your concealer is suitable for your skin type. Those with dry, mature, or sensitive skin tend to do best with liquid and cream-based foundation. To retain moisture and prevent creases under the eyes, moisturize and prime the under-eye area before applying makeup. 3. Create Depth We realize that “subtle” makeup is different for everyone: for some, it means a dab of concealer and lip balm, and for plenty of others, it could be concealer, lightweight foundation, filled brows, nude eyeshadow, and some mascara. We believe that you should wear whatever degree of makeup makes you feel the most beautiful, but when it comes to applying eyeshadow, please allow us to offer this bit of advice: no matter the shade, don’t just slap one shade across your lids! One single shade across your eyelids will do little for your eyes. Instead, opt for two neutral shades--one lighter shade to place across your lid, and a darker shade for your eye socket. This simple trick is quick, yet effective, as it helps create a deep-set look for your stunning eyes, which makes the lashes look longer and the eyes brighter. 4. Add A Pop Of Shimmer This tip can go in tandem beautifully with #3, but it can also be done without eyeshadow. If you’re looking for a summery, dewy effect with minimal effort, simply add a pop of creme or powder-based highlighter to the inner corner of your eye! While still subtle, this look is just a little more on the playful side but does wonders for the mornings where your stunning eyes just aren’t quite awake yet.If you wish to draw just a bit more attention, you can also add highlighter to your eyebrow arches, or to the center of your lids.  5. Flawless Mascara When it comes to effortless eye makeup, mascara is one of those staples that are always there for you to create definition and draw attention to your eyes. Whether you’re completing a glam look, or simply throwing on a little something before running out for errands, it’s the go-to staple! But do you ever feel that your mascara just isn’t amplifying your look the way it should? While some influencers and beauty gurus might recommend the use of eyelash treatments and false lashes, we say keep it simple with the following: Scrape off excess product Regardless of your age, excess smudges of mascara around the lids can create an aging effect that no one wants. Scraping excess product off the wand between each application will keep lashes from smudging while preventing waste & overuse. Add heat beforehand If your mascara ever feels difficult to apply, or has a lumpy consistency, it may be because the formula needs a warmup. To do so, simply place your *tightly* sealed mascara in a cup of lukewarm water, or simply roll it between your hands. Choose a nourishing mascara  If you thought mascara could only add magnitude and definition to your lashes, think again!  Our new DOUBLE LASH MASCARA + LASH GROWTH SERUM is formulated with organic mung bean, which feeds your lashes with amino acids and proteins while sprouted red clover soothes and renews the follicles with antioxidants.Amplify AND nurture your lashes for noticeable growth, strength, and thickness. Because there’s no form of effortless beauty quite like naturally stunning lashes. See our new Double Lash Grow Mascara by clicking here.
