More and more people seek out vegan products for one simple reason: it’s a healthy choice. Even brands that aren’t traditionally vegan are launching products that are free of animal or animal-derived ingredients. But just because your cosmetics are designated vegan doesn’t mean that all the ingredients are healthy for your skin. There are plenty of plant and chemically derived ingredients that aren’t meant for skin, even when packaged as vegan.

Your skin, the largest organ in your body, absorbs virtually everything you put on it, so it’s important to know what’s inside the bottle. Maintain skepticism about the vegan products you see around you. Watch out for these potentially harmful ingredients:

  • Carrageenan, a possible carcinogen in shampoos and moisturizers
  • Retinol, found in anti-aging and anti-acne products that can cause skin irritation
  • BHT, a preservative in lipstick and nail polish with as yet unclear health effects
  • Talc, a carcinogen found in body powder

If you are concerned about ingredients in your cosmetics, you can check their status in the EWG cosmetic database. The database is compiled by the Environmental Working Group, a non-profit, non-partisan organization that maintains transparency about consumer product safety.
