The Ultimate Guide to Long-Lasting Makeup

by Michelle Doan on Sep 04 2024
Tips from our Professional Makeup Artist Team Long-lasting makeup is more than just applying products—it's about knowing your skin type and using the right techniques to ensure your makeup stays fresh from day to night. Whether you're getting ready for a busy workday, wedding or a special event, we're here to share our expert tips and tricks to help you achieve makeup longevity, no matter your skin type. 1. Understand Your Skin Type The first step in achieving long-wearing makeup is to understand your skin type. Is your skin oily, dry, or a combination of both? Knowing this will guide you in selecting the right makeup products that work best for your skin. Oily Skin: If you have oily skin, focus on controlling excess oil. Using a mattifying primer can create a barrier between your skin and makeup, helping to reduce shine throughout the day. Dry Skin: For those with dry skin, hydration is key. Start with a moisturizing primer to keep your skin nourished and prevent your makeup from settling into fine lines or dry patches. Take Skin Quiz: If you're unsure about your skin type and which foundation, primer, or serum is best suited for you, take our 60-second skin quiz to find out.  2. Prep Your Skin Properly Proper skin prep is crucial for long-lasting makeup. Begin by cleansing your face to remove any impurities. Follow this with a toner and moisturizer suited to your skin type. For oily skin, consider using an oil-free moisturizer, while those with dry skin should opt for a richer, hydrating formula. After moisturizing, apply a primer. A primer not only helps to create a smooth canvas but also ensures that your makeup stays in place longer. For oily skin, choose a mattifying primer, and for dry skin, a hydrating primer works wonders. 3. Apply Makeup Strategically When applying makeup, use techniques that enhance its longevity: Foundation: For long-lasting coverage, use a long-wearing foundation that matches your skin type. Apply it with a damp makeup sponge or brush, gently pressing the product into your skin for a flawless finish. The long-lasting and resistant nature of waterproof makeup means it can be more prone to clogging pores, particularly if not thoroughly removed. This can lead to breakouts and irritation, especially for those with acne-prone or oily skin. It's crucial to follow up with a good cleansing routine to ensure all traces of makeup are removed. Concealer: Use a concealer to cover any blemishes or under-eye circles. Again, gently press the product into the skin for a natural look. Eyeshadow: To prevent eyeshadow from creasing, start with an eyeshadow primer. This will help the colors stay vibrant and in place all day. 4. Set Your Makeup Setting your makeup is crucial for ensuring it lasts all day: Translucent Setting Powder: After applying foundation and concealer, use a translucent setting powder to lock everything in place. For oily skin, focus on your T-zone to control shine. For dry skin, lightly dust the powder to avoid a cakey finish. Setting Spray: A setting spray is the final touch to seal your makeup. It helps create a barrier between your skin and makeup, ensuring that your look stays put from day to night. 5. Address Oily Skin Throughout the Day If you have oily skin, keeping your makeup in place can be a challenge. Here are a few tips to manage excess oil: Blotting Papers: Carry blotting papers with you to gently absorb any excess oil without disturbing your makeup. Touch-Up Powder: A lightweight powder can help refresh your makeup and control shine as the day progresses. Try Emani Bamboo Setting Powder or Bye Bye Shine Face Powder to keep your skin balanced and fresh. 6. Choose Long-Wearing and Waterproof Products To ensure your makeup lasts through anything, choose long-wearing or waterproof products. While waterproof makeup products are undoubtedly effective for specific occasions, they come with certain drawbacks that may not make them suitable for everyday use. Balancing waterproof products with proper skin care and opting for non-waterproof alternatives when possible can help mitigate these downsides, keeping your skin healthy and your makeup routine sustainable. Waterproof Mascara: Waterproof mascara is a must for preventing smudges and raccoon eyes, especially in humid conditions or during long days. Long-Wearing Lipstick: Opt for a long-wearing lipstick that won’t budge, even after eating and drinking. 7. Final Touches For the finishing touches, consider these additional tips: Use a Setting Spray: Reapply a setting spray throughout the day to refresh your makeup and keep it looking fresh. Avoid Touching Your Face: As tempting as it may be, avoid touching your face during the day to prevent transferring oils and dirt onto your skin. Achieving long-lasting makeup isn’t just about the products you use—it's about how you apply them and how well you understand your skin. By following these makeup tips and tricks, you can ensure that your makeup stays flawless all day long, no matter what challenges come your way. So go ahead, spend time perfecting your look, and enjoy the confidence that comes with knowing your makeup will last from morning till night. Happy makeup-ing!

by Emani Team on Aug 14 2024
Tips and Tricks for Healthy and Beautiful Lashes Mascaras come in all shapes, sizes, and formulas, each designed to give you a different lash look - from long and luscious to full and flirty. With so many options out there, how do you choose the one that’s just right for you? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! In this guide, we’ll break down the different types of mascaras, what they do, and how to select the best one to enhance your eye makeup routine. Get ready to unveil the secrets to stunning lashes and let your eyes do the talking! 🌟👁️💫 How to Choose the Right Mascara Mascaras come in various types, each designed to achieve different effects. Understanding the differences can help you choose the right mascara for your desired look. Here’s a breakdown of the most common types of mascaras: 1. Lengthening Mascara Purpose: Adds length to your lashes without adding much volume. Features: Often contains fibers or polymers that coat and extend the lashes. Best For: Those with shorter lashes or who want a more natural, elongated look. 2. Volumizing Mascara + Lash Serum Purpose: Increases the thickness and fullness of your lashes. Features: Typically has a thicker formula and a brush designed to coat each lash more fully. Best For: Those who want fuller, more dramatic lashes with added volume. 3. Curling Mascara Purpose: Adds curl to your lashes, making them look more lifted. Features: Contains curling agents and often has a specially designed brush that helps lift the lashes as you apply the product. Best For: Those with straight or downward-facing lashes who want a curl without using an eyelash curler. 4. Waterproof Mascara Purpose: Resists water, sweat, and tears, making it ideal for long wear or in humid conditions. Features: Formulated with water-resistant ingredients that help the mascara stay put. Best For: Those who need long-lasting wear or have watery eyes. It’s also useful for special occasions like weddings. 5. Smudge-Proof Mascara Purpose: Designed to prevent smudging and transferring throughout the day. Features: Typically has a long-wearing formula that sets well. Best For: Those who struggle with mascara smudging or transferring under the eyes. 6. Fiber Mascara Purpose: Adds both length and volume by using tiny fibers that adhere to the lashes. Features: Contains microfibers that attach to lashes, making them appear longer and fuller. Best For: Those looking for dramatic, voluminous, and elongated lashes. 7. Mascara for Sensitive Eyes Purpose: Formulated to be gentle on sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers. Features: Free from harsh chemicals and fragrances that could irritate sensitive eyes. Best For: Those with sensitive eyes or those who wear contact lenses. Start with nailing down exactly what you want from your mascara. Maybe you want your eyelashes to look longer. Perfect look for a lengthening mascara. Maybe your lashes are long enough, but you're hoping to make them fuller or hold a curl. Be on the lookout for a volumizing mascara. Now, let’s say you want both longer, fuller lashes. In that case, you’re going to want to pay attention to the sharp of the mascara wand, because that can also tell you a lot. Let’s take our Healthy Lash Mascara for instance. We've talked a lot about this product before, but believe us when we say it’s worth the hype. If you’ve tried this mascara or have had your eye on it for a while, you probably noticed the unique hourglass-shaped brush. This shape is the perfect choice to create that very false eyelash effect. They’ll be fuller, longer and hold a curl all day long. Honestly, what more can you ask for? Best Application Tips Ever Every morning it’s the same routine: Eyes wide, mouth open and a sweep of the mascara wand. If you really want to get the most of your mascara, the trick is all in the application. For foolproof mascara application, start by opening your eyes slightly wider than normal and looking up slightly. This should position your eye - and therefore, your lashes! - in the perfect position. Pick up your mascara wand and position it as close to the lash line as you can. Then, sweep it up to the tips while gently wiggling the wand back and forth. Sure, it might seem strange, but this will help ensure your lashes are fully coated. Two or three coats is really all you need. Any more than that, and you’re running the risk of clumps. How To Apply Mascara On Lower Lashes Start at the Base: Gently place the mascara wand at the base of your lower lashes. Wiggle the wand slightly to ensure that the mascara is applied evenly from root to tip. Use Light Strokes: Apply the mascara using short, light strokes. Avoid applying too much product to prevent clumping and smudging. Separate Lashes: If you find that the lashes are clumping together, use a clean spoolie or lash comb to separate them while the mascara is still wet. While you can definitely find mascaras with special small wands for coating the tinier eyelashes along your lower lid, the best application trick is to simply hold the wand perpendicular (that means straight up and down!) and dance it along your lash line in short quick strokes to avoid smudging any product on your skin. Perfect babydoll eyes, and no fuss needed! Staying Safe Studies have shown that most people don’t pay attention to the longevity of their makeup. While we can understand wanting to save money, you definitely should know that hanging onto products like mascara for too long can actually put your health at risk!  Whatever mascara you regularly use, it should be replaced every three months. That’s generally how long the average tube lasts before the product inside starts to dry out. But this timeframe also helps to minimize the risk of harmful bacteria that can grow inside the tube. This kind of bacteria can cause unpleasant eye infections, so it’s really not something you want to mess around with. Another important safety tip: You should avoid any “pumping” motions with the mascara wand when you’re applying the product. At best, this can dry out the product faster, meaning clumpy spider lashes (Yikes!). At worst, however, it can cause any harmful bacteria to grow even faster. Instead, use a gentle twirling motion to pick up the product on the bristles of the mascara wand. Trust us, you’ll get the same amount with each use and keep your eyes safe and healthy at the same time. Do you have any tried-and-true mascara tips or tricks? Sound off in the comments below!  FAQs  How long should I keep a tube of mascara before replacing it? Replace mascara every 3 months. Beyond this, the product dries out and bacteria can accumulate inside the tube, posing a risk of eye infection.  What type of mascara is best for sensitive eyes? Look for formulas labeled 'ophthalmologist-tested,' 'fragrance-free,' and 'hypoallergenic.' Avoid waterproof mascaras for daily use as they require harsh removers.  How do I prevent mascara from clumping? Don't pump the wand—it introduces air and dries out the formula. Instead, swirl it inside the tube. Apply 2–3 coats with a wiggling motion from root to tip.
How to Apply Serum the Right Way

How to Apply Serum the Right Way

by Emani Team on Aug 02 2024
How to Apply Serum the Right Way: A Step-by-Step Guide for Glowing Skin In the world of skincare, serums have earned their reputation as potent little powerhouses. Packed with concentrated ingredients, serums can target specific skin concerns like wrinkles, dark spots, and hydration. However, to truly unlock their potential, applying them correctly is key. If you want to get the most out of your serum and achieve that coveted glow, follow this comprehensive guide. 1. Start with a Clean Face Before applying any product to your face, it's essential to start with a clean canvas. Gentle exfoliation (1-2 times) a week can help to remove dead skin cells and you'll see faster results. Do not exfoliate if you have active breakouts, broken or irritated skin. Cleanse: Use a gentle cleanser that suits your skin type to remove dirt, oil, and impurities. This step ensures that your serum can penetrate your skin effectively without interference from residual makeup or grime.  Pat Dry: Gently pat your face dry with a clean towel. Ideally, leave your skin slightly damp as this can help the serum absorb better. 2. Apply Toner (Optional) If you use a toner, now is the time to apply it, using a cotton pad can help to remove any skin residue after cleansing. Toner: Applying a toner can help balance your skin’s pH and remove any last traces of cleanser or impurities. It also prepares your skin to absorb the serum more effectively. 3. Apply Serum Now comes the moment of truth: applying your serum. Amount: A little goes a long way with serums. Typically, 2-3 drops or a pea-sized amount is sufficient.  Method: Dispense the serum onto your fingertips or directly onto your face. Gently pat or press it into your skin using your fingertips.  Application: Smooth evenly over cleansed face, neck, and wherever signs of aging (back of hands). 4. Seal the Deal with a Moisturizer After applying your serum, it’s crucial to follow up with a moisturizer. Moisturizer: A good moisturizer helps to lock in the serum’s benefits and keeps your skin hydrated. Apply it while your serum is still slightly damp to maximize absorption and effectiveness.  5. Don’t Forget Sunscreen (Morning Routine) If your serum application is part of your morning routine, ensure you finish with sunscreen. Sunscreen: A broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 protects your skin from harmful UV rays. This step is vital as it prevents sun damage and helps maintain the results of your serum. 6. Maintain Consistency For the best results, incorporate your serum into your daily skincare routine. Frequency: Most serums are designed for daily use, either once or twice a day. Adhere to the recommended frequency on the product label and give your skin time to adapt and show results. Tips for Optimal Results Patch Test: When trying a new serum, perform a patch test first to ensure you don’t have an adverse reaction. Avoid Overloading: Stick to a streamlined routine. Layering too many products can overwhelm your skin and reduce the effectiveness of each product. Proper Storage: Keep your serum in a cool, dry place away from sunlight to preserve its efficacy. What's the difference between serum and essence? Great question. Essences are similar to serums and are made with active ingredients, but they're typically more watery and a bit less concentrated. Serum: The primary role of a serum is to address specific skin concerns such as aging, hyperpigmentation, or acne. Serums contain concentrated active ingredients like vitamins, peptides, or hyaluronic acid that target these concerns directly and effectively. Serums are meant to penetrate deeper into the skin to deliver active ingredients where they are needed most. Essence: Essences focus more on hydration and improving skin texture. They are used to balance the skin and enhance the effectiveness of other skincare products that follow. Essences often contain hydrating ingredients and may also include beneficial extracts or minerals. Essences are often used to prepare the skin, making it more receptive to the other products in your routine. While both serums and essences are integral to a skincare routine, they play different roles. Serums are potent, targeted treatments aimed at specific skin concerns, whereas essences are more about hydration and preparing the skin for further product application. Incorporating both into your routine can help you achieve optimal skin health and results. FAQs  In what order do I apply serum in my skincare routine?  Apply serum after cleansing (and toner, if used) on slightly damp skin, before moisturizer and SPF. Thin-to-thick layering ensures maximum absorption.  How much serum should I use per application?  2–3 drops or a pea-sized amount is sufficient for the face and neck. Using more doesn't increase effectiveness and can cause pilling under moisturizer.  What is the difference between a serum and an essence?  Serums are concentrated, targeted treatments for specific concerns. Essences are more watery, focused on balancing skin pH and boosting hydration before serum application.

The 6 Worst Summer Skin Care Mistakes & Tips To Fix Them

by KR Bautista on Jun 24 2024
As the temperature rises and the sun shines brighter, our skincare routines need a little extra attention to keep up with the seasonal changes. Summer brings its own set of challenges for our skin, from increased sun exposure to higher humidity levels. To help you navigate this season flawlessly, let's dive into the five worst summer skin care mistakes and how you can fix them:  Summer Skin Care Mistakes & Tips 1. Start The Morning With Sunscreen, Even if it's Cloudy UV exposure ages your skin faster than anything else setting off a cascade of free radicals that lead to age spots, wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging skin. Perhaps the most crucial mistake people make in summer is not prioritizing sunscreen. UV rays are strongest during this time, leading to sunburn, premature aging, and increased risk of skin cancer. Make sure to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and reapply every two hours, especially if you're sweating or swimming. Choose a lightweight, non-comedogenic formula for your face and a water-resistant one for outdoor activities. Tip: Incorporate sunscreen into your daily routine by applying it generously after moisturizer and before makeup. Layer with Youth Defense Foundation and Flawless Matte Foundation to give an extra layer of protection and keep oily skin looking matte and fresh. Keep a travel-sized sunscreen in your bag for quick touch-ups throughout the day. Keep a travel-sized sunscreen in your bag for quick touch-ups throughout the day.  2. Not Adjusting Your Skincare Routine Your skin's needs change with the seasons, so sticking to the same skincare routine year-round may not be effective. Products that work well in winter may feel too heavy or greasy in summer, leading to clogged pores and breakouts. Tip: Switch to lighter formulations such as gel-based cleansers, oil-free moisturizers, and gel serums like the Miracle Super Serum with fermented ginseng, and antioxidants to combat free radicals from increased sun exposure.  3. Over-Exfoliating Hot weather means more sweating, oil, and dead skin cells, therefore more opportunity for breakouts and impactions. Exfoliation smooths your skin by removing dead cells, but overdoing it can strip essential oils and disrupt your skin's barrier, especially in summer. This can lead to irritation, redness, and increased sun sensitivity. Tip: Limit exfoliation to 1-2 times a week and choose the Ageless Super Serum Kit to promote cell turnover and collagen production. Other fruit enzymes or mild scrubs with round beads. Avoid harsh physical exfoliants, especially if you're spending a lot of time outdoors. 4. Picking at Sunburn and Post-Sun Care Damage control is your top priority, despite your best efforts, you managed to get a sunburn. Though it’s tempting to peel flaking skin, don’t. The dead skin is still attached to living skin. When you pick off dead skin, you will create a painful wound that can lead to scarring and hyperpigmentation.  Tip: Instead of picking and peeling your skin, soothe and heal it with aloe gel which is available at any pharmacy.  5. Extra Hydration Many people assume their skin is adequately hydrated in summer due to higher humidity levels, but air conditioning, sun exposure, and increased outdoor activities can actually dehydrate your skin. Lack of hydration can lead to dullness, fine lines, and an uneven complexion. Tip: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated from within. Use a lightweight, hydrating moisturizer with ingredients like hyaluronic acid to lock in moisture without feeling heavy. Consider using a facial mist throughout the day for a refreshing boost. 6. Wear Hats and Sunglasses The skin around the eyes is thinner and more delicate than other parts of your face and this is where aging is most noticeable. Sunglasses are essential for protecting your eyes from UV rays, reducing glare, and maintaining visual comfort during the sunny summer months. When selecting sunglasses, opt for lenses with for labels indicating UV400 or 100% UV protection. Designer sunglasses may cost a premium, it doesn't always mean you're getting the protection you need.  At Emani, we care about you and your skin. Summer skincare is all about protection, hydration, and adjusting your routine to the season's demands. By avoiding these common mistakes and adopting the fixes suggested, you can keep your skin healthy, glowing, and protected throughout the sunny months. Please add any tips you'd like for us to include in our future summer skin care tips!

Is Retinoid the Right Choice?

by Emani Team on May 14 2024
When it comes to skincare, the debate over the most effective ingredients rages on. It’s an age-old debate regarding the optimal choice for maintaining skin health: retinoids or is there a safe yet effective solution for your skin. We’ll explore the efficacy of both retinoids and fermented ingredients with similar skin benefits - we will be weighing their benefits and considerations. Understanding Retinoids Retinoids are the warriors of skincare. They swoop in, fight off fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation, and leave your skin feeling like it just went through a spa day. The 6 classes of topical retinoids include: Tretinoin (all-trans retinoic acid), adapalene, tazarotene, trifarotene, alitretinoin, and bexarotene.  Are retinoids and retinol the same? Both retinoid and retinol are derivatives of vitamin A, just with slightly different molecular structures. Retinols have a molecular structure that causes it to convert more slowly.  What is the most powerful retinoid?  Isotretinoin, commonly known as Accutane, is the oral form of retinoic acid and the most potent of all retinoids — thus, it's often reserved for more severe and resistant forms of acne which is only prescribed by dermatologist. Common side effects of retinoids, like flakiness, dryness, and sun sensitivity, may discourage full integration into skincare routines. Why Did Europe Ban Retinol? The European Union (EU) has banned retinol in some products to protect European consumers from skin irritation and systemic absorption. The new rules limit the maximum concentration of retinol to 0.3% for face products and 0.05% for body products. These could pose health risks, particularly in vulnerable populations such as pregnant women. Is there a safe alternative? Now, let's talk about fermented ingredients. They might sound like something out of a science experiment, but trust us, they’re legit. Probiotics and fermented ingredients are made up of tiny molecules much smaller than traditional skincare ingredients, they can penetrate deeper to promote cell renewal, collagen production and strengthen the microbiome barrier. Think of them as tiny things that dive deeper into your skin, fighting off all the signs of aging and giving your skin a serious boost. Fermented skincare brings a ton of benefits to the table. They’re packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and amino acids, all working together to give your skin that radiant, youthful look.  You Have Options. The way your skin type and body chemistry interact significantly influences how it responds to various ingredients. If your goal is to combat wrinkles and fine lines, be aware that retinoids may come with drawbacks. However, if you're seeking to pamper your skin and maintain its vitality and fullness, fermented skincare might become your trusted ally. Embrace the genius fermented skincare and discover the most suitable regimen for you. Whenever in doubt, don't hesitate to seek guidance from dermatologists or skincare specialists. At the end of the day, it’s all about that glow. So, go ahead, nourish your skin with Emani Super Serum and experience healthier, smoother looking skin even if nothing ever worked for your in the past. FAQs   What is the difference between retinol and a retinoid?  Retinoids are the broader class of vitamin A derivatives; retinol is a specific, gentler form. Prescription retinoids (tretinoin) are more potent and directly active, while retinol must be converted by skin cells.  What are the side effects of using retinoids? Common side effects include peeling, dryness, redness, and sun sensitivity—especially when starting. Using a lower concentration every 2–3 nights minimizes irritation.  What is a natural alternative to retinoids for sensitive skin? Bakuchiol is a plant-derived ingredient with clinically shown retinol-like effects (cell turnover, collagen stimulation) but significantly less irritation, ideal for sensitive skin.

How Menopause Affects Your Health & Skin

by Emani Team on May 14 2024
What Is Menopause? Menopause occurs when a woman's ovaries stop releasing eggs and her menstrual cycles end. Menopause brings about hormonal changes that can profoundly impact various aspects of health, mood, sleep and aging of the skin. Understanding these effects and implementing appropriate skincare strategies is essential for maintaining skin health and vitality during this transitional phase. What Age Is This Happening? Menopause typically occurs between ages 45 to 55, with an average onset at 51. Menopause is confirmed when a woman has not had a menstrual period for 12 consecutive months.  Effects on Skin The hormonal fluctuations that accompany menopause, particularly the decline in estrogen levels, can have noticeable effects on the skin. Some common changes include: Dry, Thin Skin and Wrinkles: Estrogen plays a crucial role in maintaining skin hydration and thickness. As estrogen levels decline during menopause, the skin may become drier, thinner, and more prone to fine lines and wrinkles. Loss of Elasticity and Sagging skin: Estrogen also contributes to the production of collagen and elastin, which are responsible for the skin's firmness and elasticity. With decreased estrogen levels, the skin may lose its elasticity, leading to sagging and a less youthful appearance. Increased Sensitivity, Rash and Acne: Changes in hormone levels can make the skin more sensitive and reactive. Women may experience heightened sensitivity to skincare products, environmental factors, and certain ingredients, leading to irritation and discomfort. Hyperpigmentation and Facial Hair: Hormonal fluctuations during menopause can trigger facial hair growth, increase in melanin production, resulting in the development of dark spots, uneven skin tone, and pigmentation issues. Solutions and Skincare Tips While menopause brings about changes in the skin, there are several strategies and skincare tips that women can incorporate into their routine to support skin health and minimize the effects of hormonal fluctuations: Hydration is Key: Combat dryness by incorporating hydrating skincare products into your routine. Look for moisturizers containing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and ceramides to help replenish moisture and strengthen the skin's natural barrier. Use Sun Protection: Protect your skin from the sun's harmful UV rays by wearing sunscreen daily. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and reapply it every two hours, especially if you're spending time outdoors. Focus on Gentle Cleansing: Opt for gentle cleansers that won't strip the skin of its natural oils. Avoid harsh ingredients like sulfates and alcohol, which can further dry out the skin and exacerbate sensitivity. Incorporate Antioxidants: Antioxidants help protect the skin from oxidative stress and free radical damage. Look for skincare products containing vitamin C, vitamin E, and green tea extract to help brighten the complexion and improve overall skin health. Consider Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT): For some women, hormone replacement therapy may be recommended to alleviate symptoms of menopause, including changes in the skin. Consult with your healthcare provider to determine if HRT is right for you and discuss potential benefits and risks. Menopause brings about significant hormonal changes that can impact the health and appearance of the skin. By implementing a targeted skincare routine and adopting healthy lifestyle habits, women can effectively manage these changes and maintain a radiant, youthful complexion throughout the menopausal transition and beyond. Be kind and give ourselves extra grace - and know that you are not alone.  We formulated Emani to rejuvenate your skin and keep it looking and feeling healthy throughout perimenopause, during menopause and beyond. FAQs   What skin changes happen during menopause? Menopausal skin experiences decreased thickness and elasticity, increased dryness and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation (melasma), facial hair growth, and heightened sensitivity.  What skincare routine is best for menopausal skin?  Prioritize daily SPF, rich moisturizers with hyaluronic acid and ceramides, antioxidant serums (vitamin C), and gentle retinol or fermented probiotics to stimulate cell renewa  Is hormone replacement therapy (HRT) necessary for skin health during menopause? HRT can improve skin thickness and hydration for some women, but a targeted skincare routine addressing dryness, pigmentation, and barrier health can also produce significant improvements.

5 Reasons To Go Silicone-Free Skincare

by KR Bautista on May 04 2024
Silicone-free skincare has become a universal ingredient in skincare and cosmetics, prized for its silky texture and ability to create a smooth, flawless finish. However, despite its widespread use, silicone may not be the best choice for everyone, especially those with sensitive or acne-prone skin or looking to improve their skin’s health. 1. Pore Clogging Silicone feels smooth on the skin, but it can trap debris, sweat, and sebum in pores, leading to clogs, blackheads, and breakouts, especially for oily or acne-prone skin. This can worsen in hot and humid weather 2. Barrier Function Interference Silicone forms a barrier on your skin, potentially interfering with its natural functions. This may impair the skin's ability to regulate moisture levels and protect against environmental stressors, potentially leading to dryness, irritation, and sensitivity. 3. Dimethicone Dependency Dimethicone, a commonly used silicone derivative, is found in numerous skincare and cosmetic products. However, prolonged use of dimethicone products may cause skin dependency on the artificial silicone barrier for hydration and protection. 4. Potential Sensitivity Reactions Although silicone is generally considered safe for most individuals, some people may experience sensitivity reactions to silicone-based products. Symptoms may include redness, itching, burning, or even allergic contact dermatitis, particularly in individuals with sensitive or reactive skin. 5. Hampers The Benefits Of Skincare Silicone molecules form a surface-level barrier, potentially blocking absorption of beneficial skincare ingredients. This can limit the effectiveness of other products in your skincare routine, preventing them from reaching deeper layers of the skin where they are needed most. So, What's the Alternative? For those seeking silicone-free alternatives in their skincare and cosmetics, there are several beneficial ingredients to consider. Plant-derived emollients like jojoba oil, shea butter, and coconut oil provide natural hydration and nourishment without silicone's occlusive effects. Additionally, humectants like hyaluronic acid and glycerin help to attract and retain moisture, promoting skin hydration and suppleness.  Look for products labeled as "dimethicone-free" or "silicone-free" to avoid silicone derivatives such as dimethicone, cyclomethicone, and cyclopentasiloxane commonly found in ingredient lists.  While silicone can impart certain cosmetic benefits and enhance the texture of skincare and cosmetic products, it may not be suitable for everyone, particularly those with sensitive, acne-prone, or environmentally conscious skin.  By understanding silicone's drawbacks and exploring alternative formulations, individuals can prioritize their skin's health, comfort, and sustainability with informed choices.

The Magical Benefits of Collagen for Skin

by Emani Team on Feb 08 2024
Can this be the Fountain of Youth? Let’s explore! Collagen emerges as a steadfast ally when it comes to anti-aging ingredients. It is celebrated for its pivotal role in enhancing skin health and has earned its place as a staple in skincare routines worldwide. If you're one of the people looking to slow down the aging process and improve your overall health, you are in the right place! Let's deep dive into the super ingredient called collagen and unveil its benefits to your skin. What is Collagen and Why is it Important for Skin Health? Collagen, often dubbed the skin's best friend, is a vital protein that acts as the foundation for our skin, hair, nails, and connective tissues. Picture it as the scaffolding that keeps your skin firm and elastic. Collagen is the body's natural protein that provides structure to your skin, bones, muscles, and more. As we age, our collagen production naturally decreases, leading to sagging skin, wrinkles, and fine lines. This decline in collagen is like nature's way of telling our skin to take a backseat. But fear not! By understanding this process, we can take charge. Introducing more collagen into our skincare routine can be a game-changer. It offers structural support, enhanced elasticity, and defense against the signs of aging. It's your skin's superhero, fighting to keep you looking vibrant and fresh. How Does Collagen Benefit the Skin's Appearance and Texture? Anti-Aging Benefits: Collagen is known for its anti-aging properties. As a natural component of the skin, it helps maintain firmness and suppleness. Including collagen in your skincare routine can minimize the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, giving you a smoother and more youthful complexion. Enhanced Skin Elasticity: The elasticity of your skin is closely tied to collagen levels. A decrease in collagen results in loss of elasticity, contributing to sagging and drooping skin. Regular use of collagen-based products can improve skin elasticity, restoring a more lifted and toned appearance. Hydration Boost: Collagen plays a vital role in maintaining skin hydration. It helps your skin retain moisture, preventing dryness and flakiness. Well-hydrated skin not only looks healthier but also feels softer and more comfortable. Wrinkle Reduction: Fine lines and wrinkles are often a result of collagen depletion. By stimulating collagen production through skincare, you can effectively reduce the depth and visibility of wrinkles, promoting a smoother and more refined skin texture. Supports Skin Regeneration: Collagen is essential for skin regeneration and repair. Whether dealing with scars, blemishes, or uneven skin tone, collagen aids in the renewal process, promoting a clearer and more even complexion over time. Can Collagen Supplements Really Improve Skin Health? Absolutely! Collagen supplements are like a secret weapon, ready to transform your skin health. Packed with collagen peptides, these supplements effortlessly assimilate into your body, giving a boost to your natural collagen production. The result? Tangible enhancements in skin elasticity and hydration. Think of it as a little daily dose of self-care that contributes to a more youthful and nourished complexion. So, yes, when it comes to revitalizing your skin from within, collagen supplements can indeed be a game-changer, helping you glow with confidence. Are There Any Side Effects or Risks Associated with Collagen Usage? When it comes to the benefits of collagen for your skin, the good news is that it's generally safe for most people. The use of collagen offers a natural boost to your skin's elasticity, hydration, and youthfulness. However, like any skincare ingredient, it's wise to exercise caution. Be mindful of potential allergies or sensitivities, ensuring your skin responds positively. Before diving into a new supplement regimen, consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice. Your health expert can guide you on the best approach, making sure that incorporating collagen into your routine aligns seamlessly with your overall well-being. Safety first – it's the key to unlocking the radiant and healthy skin you deserve. Incorporating Collagen into Your Skincare Routine Now that you get to know collagen and its benefits, it's time to make it a daily skincare essential. Choose collagen-infused creams, serums, or supplements tailored to your specific needs like the Halo Vegan Super Serum. Crafted with precision from Pichia Pastoris yeast using advanced fermentation technology, this serum is a game-changer. It helps accelerate absorption, minimize fine lines, and strengthen your skin's microbiome – all in one bottle. Another secret to success is regularity. Whether you opt for a cream before bedtime, a serum in the morning, or a daily supplement, consistency ensures your skin enjoys the full spectrum of advantages. Make collagen your skincare companion, and you'll witness a radiant transformation. This simple step isn't just a routine; it's a commitment to nurturing your skin's health and preserving its timeless beauty. The bottomline is... Age gracefully by understanding the benefits of collagen plays in promoting skin health, and witness the transformative effects as your skin reflects the care and nourishment it deserves. It's not just a skincare routine; it's a journey towards a timeless and radiant you. FAQs   When does collagen production decline and what does it cause? Collagen production starts declining around age 25 at about 1% per year, leading to loss of firmness, fine lines, thinner skin, and slower wound healing.  Do topical collagen products work or should I take supplements? Topical collagen molecules are typically too large to penetrate skin, but products that stimulate production (retinol, peptides, vitamin C) are effective. Collagen peptide supplements have growing evidence for skin elasticity benefits.  What is vegan collagen and how does it work? Vegan collagen uses plant-derived ingredients—like Emani's fermented Pichia Pastoris yeast—that stimulate the skin's own collagen synthesis rather than extracting collagen from animals.
Mineral Sunscreen vs Chemical Sunscreen

Mineral Sunscreen vs Chemical Sunscreen

by Emani Team on Feb 01 2024
Sunscreen is a topical health and wellness product that protects your skin from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. Roughly 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. We all know how crucial it is to wear sunscreen. It prevents sunburn and minimizes sun damage, slowing down the aging process for our skin. But in the past few years, the things we know about SPF have dramatically changed. But one thing’s for sure: we should be wearing sunscreen every single day--even on the days we’re wearing makeup. And there is a method to wearing sunscreen properly.  Let’s start with the types of sunscreen you can use. Mineral Sunscreen and Chemical Sunscreen: What’s the Difference? As you may be aware, there are two major categories of sunscreen: there’s chemical sunscreen, and then there’s physical, or mineral-based sunscreen. So what’s the difference? It boils down to your sunscreen's active ingredients, like oxybenzone, octisalate, and homosalate, triggering a chemical reaction when UV light contacts your skin.  Essentially, these active ingredients cause UV light to be converted into heat, which quickly dispels from your skin. Physical sunscreens use minerals like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to create a barrier on your skin, filtering out harmful rays like a breathable shield. Both types of sunscreen are effective against harmful rays, but chemical sunscreen has raised concerns in recent years. This attention gained massive traction in 2019, when a clinical trial from the Journal of the American Medical Association found that several of the active ingredients associated with chemical sunscreen can absorb into the bloodstream at rates that far exceed the FDA’s required amount. On top of that, chemical sunscreens aren’t so great for the environment. Scientists have voiced their concerns that in particular, the chemical sunscreen ingredient oxybenzone may disrupt the DNA of coral, and this is contributing to the devastating damage on coral reefs. Mineral sunscreens, on the other hand, are completely natural, and do not indicate any potential damage on the environment or our bodies, but it’s very important that they’re used properly.Whichever sunscreen you wear, remember: any kind of sunscreen is better than none at all! That’s why it’s important to understand how to pair the SPF you use with your makeup, the right way. When to Apply Sunscreen With Makeup, and How to Reapply  On days when you’re wearing sunscreen and makeup, the order of application is everything. So what comes first? We highly recommend finding a physical (mineral based) sunscreen, to start, apply skin care product first, your favorite moisturizer or your favorite Emani Perfect 10 Serum. This base allow nutrients and help to balance your skin and it has a primer built in to prolong makeup wear. Powdered mineral sunscreens can be swept over makeup to prevent smudging or caking. Another important thing to know about mineral sunscreen is that they need to be apply every 80 minutes. Emani is all about helping you to look your best and take care of your skin, when in doubt, please consult your dermatologist about your skin health.  If you're looking for Emani products with SPF perfect for your skin, checkout these products: Perfect 10 Primer Hydrawear Plus FAQs  What is the difference between mineral and chemical sunscreen? Mineral sunscreens use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to physically block UV rays. Chemical sunscreens use synthetic compounds that absorb and convert UV energy to heat.   Is mineral sunscreen better for sensitive skin? Generally yes. Mineral sunscreens sit on the skin's surface without absorption, have fewer irritation risks, and are recommended for sensitive, acne-prone, and rosacea-prone skin.  How do I wear sunscreen under makeup without pilling? Apply sunscreen and let it fully absorb for 2–3 minutes before applying primer or foundation. Mineral powder SPF can be layered over makeup for touch-ups without disturbing the base.

✨ Embracing Hygge: The Art of Coziness ✨

by KR Bautista on Nov 09 2023
As the days grow shorter and the temperatures drop, November marks the transition into the winter season. It's the perfect time to start preparing your heart and home for the cozy months ahead. On my last trip to Copenhagen, Denmark, I was absolutely fascinated with the Danish concept of "Hygge" (pronounced hoo-gah) and how this concept was woven into all aspects of life to create warm, inviting, and comfortable environments to soothe the soul during the winter season.  Hygge is all about finding joy and contentment in life's simple pleasures. It's about creating an atmosphere of coziness, warmth, and togetherness, especially during the colder months. Here's what it's all about:  Candles & Soft Lighting: Lighting plays a significant role in setting a cozy atmosphere. In addition, light some candles, dim the lights, or use fairy lights to create a warm and inviting space.  Comfort & Relaxation: Hygge is all about feeling comfortable and relaxed. Also, think soft blankets, fluffy socks, and your coziest sweater – whatever makes you feel most at ease.  Connection: Spend quality time with friends and loved ones. Moreover, it's not about the quantity of time but the quality – enjoy meaningful conversations and shared moments.  Hot Drinks: Also, a steaming cup of your favorite tea, coffee, or hot chocolate can instantly boost your coziness factor.  Unplugging: Put away your screens and enjoy the simple pleasures of life. Also, read a book, listen to music, or engage in a creative hobby.  Nature: Hygge doesn't mean staying indoors all the time. Furthermore, take a walk in the park, breathe in the fresh air, and appreciate the beauty of nature.  Gratitude: Cultivate an attitude of gratitude. Also, recognize and appreciate the little things that bring joy into your life.  Remember, there's no one-size-fits-all formula for hygge – it's about embracing what makes you feel cozy, content, and connected to the world around you. So, this season, let's all bring a little more joy and comfort into our lives. 🍂❤️

Why We Love Licorice Root Extract

by Emani Team on Oct 18 2023
When it comes to skincare, we often find ourselves seeking the latest and greatest products that promise to transform our skin. However, sometimes, the most effective solutions can be found in nature. One such natural wonder is Licorice Root Extract. Licorice Root Extract is a natural ingredient derived from the root of the Glycyrrhiza glabra plant. This plant is native to various regions, including Europe and Asia. It has been used for medicinal purposes for centuries, and its extract is a key ingredient in many skincare products. One of the primary active ingredients in it is glycyrrhizin, which offers a range of skincare benefits. Its anti-inflammatory properties make it an excellent choice for those with sensitive skin. It contains substances that inhibit melanin production. This makes it effective for treating issues such as dark spots, uneven skin tone, and sun damage. Our 3 Favorite Licorice Root Extract Skin Benefits. 1. Helps to brighten and even out skin tone One of the standout benefits of it is its ability to brighten the skin. It reduces dark spots and hyperpigmentation, making it a great natural option instead of chemical skin-lightening products. The extract works by inhibiting the production of melanin, which is responsible for skin pigmentation. The root also contains a flavonoid, a plant polyphenol with antioxidant properties that can protect the skin from pre-mature discoloration, aging, and environmental stress. Licorice Root Extract is rich in antioxidants, which help combat free radical damage. By neutralizing these harmful molecules, it contributes to healthier, more youthful-looking skin. Why Licorice Root Extract in makeup? Licorice Root Extract extends beyond skincare products alone. Its exceptional skin-brightening and protective properties have also found their way into makeup products, including foundations. Why K-Beauty Bio-Active Skincare Outperforms Everything Else You've Tried

by Emani Team on May 30 2023
Why What Goes Into Your Products Matters as Much as What You Put On Your Face Most skincare sits on the surface. Bio-active skincare actually gets through. Here is why that difference matters more than anything else on the label. If you've ever wondered why some skincare products seem to do nothing while others genuinely change how your skin looks and feels, the answer usually comes down to one thing: whether the active ingredients can actually reach the place where they need to work. Most conventional skincare products, even good ones, stay in the outermost layer of skin. They hydrate the surface, soften texture temporarily, and create a nice feel. But they don't reach the deeper layers where collagen is made, where cells renew themselves, and where the real work of skin health actually happens. So they feel good, and the effect fades by the next morning. Bio-active skincare is different. And for skin that's going through the changes that come with menopause, that difference is the whole story. What "bio-active" actually means Bio-active is a term that gets used loosely in the beauty industry, so it's worth being precise about what it means here. A bio-active ingredient is one that is biologically active, meaning it doesn't just sit on the skin, it interacts with skin cells in a measurable way. It triggers a response. It communicates with the cell processes that control collagen production, hydration, barrier repair, and renewal. It produces a real, trackable change in what the skin does, not just in how it feels for a few hours. The ingredients themselves typically come from plants, herbs, fruits, and fermented botanical extracts. But the source alone doesn't make an ingredient bio-active. What matters is whether it can actually penetrate deep enough to reach the cells it needs to communicate with, and whether it's concentrated and formulated well enough to do something meaningful when it gets there. This is where most natural skincare falls short. The ingredient is there on the label, but in a concentration too low to do much, or in a form too large to get through the skin's protective outer layer. Good intentions, limited results. The problem with most skincare for changing skin Here's something that doesn't get talked about enough when it comes to menopause and skincare: the changes happening in your skin during this period aren't just cosmetic. They're cellular. Estrogen supports collagen production, helps skin retain moisture, keeps the outer barrier organized and effective, and supports the speed at which skin cells renew themselves. When estrogen levels drop, all of that slows down simultaneously. Skin becomes thinner, drier, slower to repair, and more reactive. Fine lines appear more quickly. Uneven tone becomes harder to address. Products that used to work stop working, not because the products changed, but because the skin's ability to respond to them has shifted. Surface-level skincare, the kind that hydrates without penetrating, can mask some of this temporarily. But it doesn't address what's actually happening. It's the equivalent of painting over a wall that needs structural repair. What skin in this chapter of life actually needs are ingredients that go deeper. Ingredients that reach the cells responsible for producing collagen and renewing themselves. Ingredients that support the skin's biology rather than just coating the outside of it. That's what bio-active skincare is designed to do. Why fermentation is the key that makes it work At Emani, the bio-active approach is built on a patented fermentation process, and it's worth understanding why fermentation matters rather than just accepting it as a buzzword. Skin has a barrier. That barrier is its job, to keep things out. Most skincare molecules are too large to get through it effectively, which is why so many products work only on the surface. Fermentation solves this problem by breaking large molecules down into much smaller ones. When an ingredient is fermented, microorganisms break it apart at a molecular level. The resulting molecules are a fraction of the size of the original ingredient. Smaller molecules penetrate the skin's barrier more easily, traveling deeper to reach the layers where collagen production, cell renewal, and barrier repair actually happen. But fermentation does more than just miniaturize. It also creates new beneficial compounds that weren't in the original ingredient at all. The fermentation process generates vitamins, amino acids, antioxidants, and peptides as natural byproducts. So what comes out of fermentation is not just a smaller version of what went in, it's a more nutritionally dense, more biologically active ingredient that the skin can absorb and use in ways the unfermented version simply couldn't deliver. Clinical studies on Emani's fermented formulas have shown results that last twice as long compared to the same ingredients in non-fermented form. That's not a marketing claim. It's a measurable difference in how long the skin continues to benefit after each application. What this looks like in practice: the Emani serums built on this science Understanding the science is one thing. Knowing which products actually put it to work is another. Three Emani serums represent the clearest expression of the bio-active fermentation approach, each addressing a different aspect of what menopausal skin needs most. Halo Vegan Collagen Serum Collagen is the structural protein that keeps skin firm, and its production slows significantly as estrogen declines during menopause. The Halo Collagen Serum uses vegan collagen along with saccharomyces ferment, a yeast fermentation filtrate, to support the skin's own ability to produce and maintain its collagen structure. Saccharomyces ferment is one of the most studied fermented ingredients in clinical skincare research. It works by delivering a concentrated mix of nutrients and amino acids to the deeper skin layers where collagen is actually made. The result, with consistent use, is skin that gradually looks firmer and more even, not because something is filling it from the outside, but because the cells responsible for structural support are being better nourished to do their job. Argan oil and arginine in the formula support moisture and texture, while glycerin draws water into the skin and holds it there. For skin that has lost density and feels less resilient than it used to, this serum addresses the root of that change rather than just the surface appearance of it. Sleep & Renew Super Serum This serum is built on a base of 85% fermented probiotics, with zero water in the formula. That matters because water dilutes. A formula with no water contains a significantly higher concentration of active ingredients per drop, which means more of what your skin actually needs with every application. The probiotic ferment base supports the skin's microbiome, the community of beneficial microorganisms that live on healthy skin and play a direct role in maintaining the barrier and keeping immune reactions calm. Menopausal skin frequently experiences microbiome disruption alongside barrier thinning, and the two problems reinforce each other. Supporting the microbiome with a fermented probiotic base helps address both at the same time. Apple and papaya fruit extracts support gentle overnight cell turnover. Your skin naturally renews itself while you sleep, but this process slows with age and hormonal change. These extracts provide the biological signals that encourage the renewal cycle to continue effectively, so you wake up to skin that looks more refreshed and more even than it would without that support. Niacinamide works alongside the fermented base to help reduce the appearance of uneven tone and calm visible redness, which is particularly relevant for menopausal skin that tends to flush or show more blotchiness than it used to. Miracle 7-in-1 Super Serum The Miracle Serum takes a multi-function approach, acting as a serum, primer, and moisturizer in a single formula, built around bioactive fermented ingredients that address the most common concerns for changing skin in one step. For menopausal skin that is dealing with dryness, uneven tone, occasional breakouts, and sensitivity all at once, a formula that addresses multiple concerns without requiring multiple steps is genuinely practical. The fermented base provides the same deep-penetration benefit as the other serums, while the multi-function formulation simplifies what can otherwise become an overwhelming routine. What Emani removes, and why that matters as much as what goes in Bio-active skincare is as much about what isn't in the formula as what is. Emani has eliminated over 1,500 harsh chemicals and allergens from its formulas, including synthetic fragrances, parabens, silicones, talc, formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, FD&C dyes, mineral oil, petrolatum, and triclosan. For menopausal skin, where the barrier is thinner and more permeable than it used to be, this isn't a marketing position. It's a biological necessity. When the skin's outer barrier is compromised, ingredients that used to stay on the surface now penetrate more deeply than they should. Synthetic fragrance, which can contain dozens of undisclosed sensitizing compounds, reaches immune cells it wouldn't have reached before. Harsh preservatives interact with a barrier that's already under stress. The skin's reduced ability to screen things out means that what goes into the formula matters more now than at any other point in your life. Removing these ingredients removes variables that add to the skin's load at a time when its resources are already stretched. How to think about your routine differently The most common mistake with skincare during menopause is continuing to treat it as a surface problem. More moisturizer. Thicker creams. Products that feel more substantial. The surface does need support. But if that's all you're addressing, you're managing symptoms without supporting the biology underneath them. A bio-active approach asks a different question: what do my skin cells actually need to do their job better? And then it puts the ingredients that answer that question into forms that can actually reach those cells. For most women going through perimenopause or menopause, this means a nightly serum that supports cell renewal while you sleep, Sleep & Renew, a morning serum that supports collagen and hydration, Halo Collagen, and a single multi-function formula for simplicity on days when your routine needs to be faster, Miracle 7-in-1. It also means being patient. Bio-active ingredients work cumulatively. The fermentation technology delivers nutrients deeper with each application, and the cellular changes that result take time to become visible at the surface. Most women notice meaningful change in skin comfort and texture within two to three weeks. More significant changes in firmness and tone typically show up at the four to six week mark. Your skin didn't change overnight. The approach that helps it recover won't either. But when the right ingredients are actually reaching the right place, the change is real, and it lasts. The bottom line Most skincare products are designed to make skin feel better temporarily. Bio-active skincare, formulated with fermented ingredients that penetrate deeply and communicate with skin cells rather than sitting on top of them, is designed to make skin actually function better over time. For skin that is navigating the cellular changes that come with menopause, that's not a subtle distinction. It's the entire difference between a routine that manages how your skin looks and one that genuinely supports how your skin works. At Emani, that's been the standard since 1998. Not because it sounds better on a label, but because it produces results that hold up, day after day, in skin that deserves more than surface-level care. Emani Cosmetics has been formulating vegan, cruelty-free skincare and makeup since 1998. All Emani products are free from parabens, synthetic fragrance, silicones, talc, and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives. If you are experiencing significant skin reactivity, persistent barrier disruption, or other skin concerns related to hormonal change, we recommend speaking with a dermatologist.
