6 Reasons to Get a Mammogram

by KR Bautista on Oct 04 2021
A mammogram is a specialized x-ray for breast examination, used to detect signs of breast cancer. A mammogram is the most reliable way to detect cancer early on, and this is important, because breast cancer is easier to successfully treat before it’s spread. According to the Center for Disease Control, women should begin yearly mammograms around the age 40 to 49, and while we know it’s by no means a fun experience, it’s certainly an important one one. Let’s talk about 6 major reasons why you should get a mammogram for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. 1. It Only Takes About 20 Minutes While a mammogram is not the most pleasant experience, it only takes about 20 minutes to complete. Considering that a mammogram could save your life, it’s a pretty fair tradeoff. 2. You Should Get Results Within 10 Days Typically, you can expect to receive your mammogram results within 10 days. If doctors find anything unusual, they’ll most likely contact you within a week. Remember, though, this doesn't automatically imply cancer; it might be a cyst, dense breast tissue, or the image may require a retake. 3. When Caught Early, It’s Often Preventable Although mammograms cannot prevent breast cancer on their own, they can detect signs of cancer early on before it spreads throughout the body. And when cancer is detected when it’s still contained in the breast, the survival rate is 99%, according to the American Cancer Society. 4. Signs Of Cancer Can’t Always Be Felt. While practicing self-exams is crucial, there are instances when no changes become apparent until a substantial lump has formed. And by the time this occurs, breast cancer can spread and become harder to treat. Mammograms work by observing changes in breast tissue, and this means that they can detect cancer long before you or your physician might find a lump in your breast. 5. Your Risk Of Developing Breast Cancer Increases As You Age As you age, your risk of developing breast cancer increases. That's why doctors recommend yearly mammograms, especially after turning 40. There are other factors can increase your risk as well, including: Alcohol consumption A sedentary lifestyle  Obesity Family history 6. There Are Options for Low-Income Women For women who are uninsured or low-income, there are free and low-cost options available. And many of these programs are held during the month of October for National Breast Cancer Month! For more information, call the American Cancer Society at 1-800-227-2345.

Hormonal Imbalance: 5 Warning Signs and What to Do About Them

by KR Bautista on Sep 29 2021
Hormonal imbalance may be to blame for a range of unwanted symptoms from fatigue or weight gain to itchy skin or low mood. Hormones are chemicals produced by glands in the endocrine system and released into the bloodstream. An imbalance occurs when there is too much or too little of a hormone. Your hormones are important for regulating many different processes in the body including appetite and metabolism, sleep cycles, reproductive cycles and sexual function, body temperature and mood. No surprise then that even the slightest imbalance may have a noticeable effect on your overall health and wellbeing. Levels of hormones naturally fluctuate at various life stages, most noticeably during puberty and in women during the menstrual cycle, pregnancy and the menopause. They can also be affected by lifestyle and certain medical conditions. Managing Hormonal Imbalance To Health: Symptoms And Solutions Crucial: Recognize symptoms and consult a qualified healthcare provider for tailored treatment—medication, complementary therapies, or lifestyle adjustments—to restore your well-being and balance. 1. Mood Swings The female sex hormone estrogen has an effect on neurotransmitters in the brain including serotonin (a chemical that boosts mood). Fluctuations in estrogen can cause premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or depressed mood during the perimenopause (the phase before periods stop completely) and the menopause. What to do: If mood disruptions affect daily life, consider changes like exercise, less alcohol, no smoking, herbal remedies (like St. John’s Wort), or HRT for perimenopausal/menopausal relief. Keeping a symptom diary will also help you and your doctor identify if hormonal imbalance changes could be to blame. 2. Heavy Or Painful Periods If experienced alongside symptoms like abdominal pain, frequent urination, lower back pain, constipation, and painful intercourse, you might have fibroids. These non-cancerous growths form in or near the womb. Their exact cause is uncertain, but estrogen stimulation and family history may raise your risk. What to do: If you are suffering symptoms, consult a qualified health professional who may prescribe medication to shrink the fibroids. In severe cases or if medication does not resolve the problem, surgery may be considered to remove them. 3. Low Libido Low libido often occurs in women during perimenopause and menopause due to declining estrogen and testosterone levels (though women also have testosterone). Other menopausal symptoms like night sweats, fatigue, low mood, and anxiety can also affect your sex life. What to do: If you are going through the menopause, you may wish to consult a women’s health expert about trying testosterone as part of your HRT. This can improve your libido as well as boost your mood and energy levels. Doctors administer it in very low doses as a gel applied to the skin. 4. Insomnia And Poor-Quality Sleep During the perimenopause and menopause, the ovaries gradually produce less estrogen and progesterone, which promotes sleep. Falling estrogen levels may also contribute to night sweats which disrupt your sleep, contributing to fatigue and lack of energy. What to do: The first step is to get an accurate diagnosis. During perimenopause or menopause, consult your doctor about Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) to restore estrogen and progestogen levels. Improve sleep by wearing cotton nightwear, using cotton sheets, maintaining a cool, dark bedroom, exercising, and cutting alcohol/caffeine. 5. Unexplained Weight Gain Various hormone-related issues, like underactive thyroid, PCOS (causing ovarian cysts), and menopause, can lead to abdominal weight gain.

All About Green Tea & Your Skin

by KR Bautista on Sep 16 2021
Whether you're quitting a coffee habit or seeking a gentle 2 pm pick-me-up, green tea, known for its fragrance, flavor, and ability to enhance focus without inducing jitters, is a delightful beverage. And since the prevalence of natural skin care, green tea has been a hot topic: while it’s gentle on skin, it can possess a wealth of benefits. Is it the secret to our best skin yet? Let’s break down what makes green tea so powerful. What Gives Green Tea Its Benefits? For centuries, people have consumed green tea, acknowledging its association with clarity, focus, and longevity. Beyond its visible attributes, green tea, a remarkable plant-based ingredient, holds even more value. Amino acids, phytonutrients, and, most notably, antioxidants compose green tea. And let’s not forget about caffeine, which can actually do wonders for our skin, believe it or not! Researchers have observed its high versatility and studied it as an ingredient to aid conditions like acne, rosacea, and even signs of aging. So let’s break down how the compounds in green tea help our skin! Antioxidants: Your Skin’s Shield You may have heard about how antioxidants are good for you, and that it has a lot of them. But what exactly are antioxidants, and why are they so important for our skin? Think of antioxidants as your first line of defense against free radicals. Free radicals, like rust on metal, cause oxidative stress in your skin. We encounter free radicals in our environment daily, and they’re virtually possible to avoid.  Also, we can use antioxidants to combat oxidative stress in our bodies and on our skin. Antioxidants are extremely helpful because they neutralize free radicals and prevent further damage. Antioxidants can vary in ability, though, and some can even reverse free radical damage over time Green tea's antioxidants: Polyphenols and EGCG in focus. Polyphenols: The Plant-Powered Antioxidant Polyphenols, found in tea, cherries, coffee, and cacao, defend against free radicals and sun damage. According to a 2010 study, polyphenols have been shown to possess photoprotective properties, which may even help reverse DNA damage caused by UV rays. In addition, the polyphenols in green tea possess antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, which can do wonders against acne, and may even help with defense against skin cancer, as noted in this study. Also, polyphenols make up a huge group of antioxidants—in fact, there are over 8,000 different types, and one of these subgroups is known as catechins. But when we talk about the catechins in green tea, we tend to focus on one in particular: EGCG. EGCG: The Glow Booster EGCG, or epigallocatechin, is one of the most potent compounds found in green tea, and it’s currently the most widely-researched type of catechin. Your skin's ally against inflammation, EGCG, oiliness, redness, and acne. In one study, it was demonstrated that EGCG can work as a gentle, yet effective treatment for acne by easing inflammation, reducing excess sebum production, and by inhibiting the spreading of P. acnes, AKA, the bacteria known for causing acne, in the skin.EGCG is also a promising anti-aging ingredient. Study reveals EGCG promotes faster skin cell regeneration for a radiant glow. Caffeine: Your Skin’s Ultimate Pick-Me-Up Aside from the powerful antioxidants in green tea, caffeine also plays an important role in its effectiveness.  Give your skin a caffeine boost for surprising benefits. Caffeine applied topically boosts circulation, tightens vessels, and reduces puffiness.Revitalize your skin with green tea, featured in our HD Corrective Concealer + Vitamin C.

What No One Tells You About Aging

by KR Bautista on Sep 01 2021
Whether it’s tabloids bashing women over 40, ads pedaling fillers and botox, or the sheer lack of representation, we’re told as women that aging is just about the worst thing we can do in life. We’re taught that wrinkles are something to fear, gray hairs are unattractive, and that we should look away in shame from our stretch marks. And yet, here’s the thing about aging: we all do it, and it’s one of the most natural things you could ever do. Over time, we all develop a few wrinkles, and our skin simply changes. It’s part of what makes us dynamic beings, and it’s a sign of a life that’s been truly lived. But while aging is something to be embraced, that doesn’t mean we can’t do it gracefully. Today, we’re talking about what they don’t tell you about aging, how our skin responds to it, and what we all can do to stay radiant well into our 80s. How Does Our Skin Age? Before we talk about how the skin ages, it helps to understand the layers of the skin, and what they do to protect us. The three layers of our skin include the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous tissue. The epidermis, the outermost layer of skin, is responsible for shedding dead skin and forming scar tissue. Beneath the epidermis lies the dermis, comprising elastin, collagen fibers, fats, blood vessels, and elastin, working in unison to maintain skin elasticity, plumpness, and support for the epidermis. Below that is the subcutaneous layer, which uses fat to keep our internal organs warm and protected. Aging begins around our 20s, and it’s when collagen formation gradually begins to slow down, by 1% each year, according to The Dartmouth Undergraduate Journal of Science. Collagen and elastin fibers thicken and clump together, which leads to the skin loosening and sagging. Around our 30s, our skin’s natural moisturizing process also begins to slow, leading to the skin thinning as fat cells begin to shrink.  In our 40s, collagen production begins to fully stop, causing fine lines and wrinkles. By the time we’re in our 50s, the sebaceous glands shrink in size, causing the skin to become more dry and more sensitive. The Aging We Can Prevent The skin ages in two ways: intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic aging is your skin's natural aging process, occurring without external factors accelerating it. Aside from surgical procedures, there’s not much we can do to prevent intrinsic aging. Habits and environmental factors, such as sun damage and smoking, cause extrinsic aging. Of course, all know smoking’s bad for us, but sun damage can actually become a major issue over time. UVA light penetrates all skin layers, while UVB light affects the outer layer, causing sun damage. This results in freckles, thickened skin, sunspots, and precancerous cells called actinic keratosis. But here’s the good thing about sun damage: there are things we can do to prevent it. Regardless of your age, establish a routine of limiting sun exposure and applying sunscreen regularly. Another form of preventable aging is free radical damage. Free radicals, unstable hydrogen molecules with unpaired electrons, seek bonds, even within our bodies. When they bond with our skin, it causes oxidative stress, akin to rust on metal or browning apples. How do we stop free radicals? With the help of antioxidants! Berries, green tea, and cocoa are rich in antioxidants that combat and neutralize free radicals. To help prevent the onset of free radical damage, go for products with antioxidant-rich ingredients. For instance, our Hydrawear and Miracle 7-in-1 Priming Serum contain green tea, which is a known powerhouse of antioxidants. You’ll also find antioxidant-rich ingredients throughout our products like white tea, fermented ginseng, Centella asiatica, and grape seed extract. Boost daily antioxidants with plant-rich diet and green tea. While we all have to age eventually, we all can do so gracefully! With the help of healthy habits and informed choices, we can look our most beautiful at any age.

Vitamin C: Your Skin’s Ultimate Sidekick

by KR Bautista on Aug 18 2021
When you think of vitamin C, do you think of juicy citrus fruits? Or crunchy carrots? Or maybe those powdered immunity boosters come to mind? Despite its unappetizing nature, vitamin C is a vital nutrient for our health and well-being. It has the power to fight signs of aging, fade dark spots, and illuminate our skin. So without further ado, let’s talk about vitamin C in skin care! How Does Vitamin C Help Our Skin? So, what is it exactly that makes it so effective against dark spots? Above all, a potent antioxidant. And antioxidants do wonders for the skin because they neutralize free radicals. Unstable hydrogen molecules known as free radicals exist in the environment, seeking stability by bonding with other molecules' electrons. Free radicals binding to molecules in our bodies lead to oxidative stress, akin to bike rust or apple browning. This makes free radical damage a significant factor in premature aging, emphasizing the role of antioxidants as an anti-aging skincare ingredient. But it does far more than fight free radicals; it also helps fade dark spots. Dark spots are made of a dark pigment known as melanin, and melanin production can be triggered by a number of factors such as sun damage, aging, and pregnancy. However, it’s been observed that vitamin C may prevent the onset of dark spots by reducing the activity of the enzyme that creates melanin. Moreover, it can help boost the production of collagen, which is a fibrous protein in the skin that keeps it elastic and firm. As we age, our bodies produce less collagen over time, especially helpful for supporting it. When To Use Vitamin C On Skin? Sometimes, good skin care comes down to good timing. Typically, nighttime skin care is all about repairing the skin, while daytime skin care is about protecting it. Vitamin C is actually incredibly versatile; while some ingredients like retinol and BHAs are better suited for nighttime use, it can be worn both day and night.  When applied before bed, it can help with nightly repair while you rest as it bolsters collagen production to help fade wrinkles and dark spots.  But it can also protect your skin during the day! When applied in the morning, it can help prevent free radical damage, which we regularly encounter in environmental pollution and UV exposure. Bottom line: vitamin C is a 24/7 skin-saver! When Makeup & Vitamin C Come Together So then, what’s the best way to use it? What products should we look for? A solid serum or moisturizer can make a great step in your skincare routine both night and day, but if we told you that vitamin C makeup was an option? That’s where our HD Corrective Concealer + Vitamin C comes in! What could possibly be better than a crease-proof concealer with coverage for days? One that actively works to brighten the skin and keep it firm! With vitamin C, avocado and green tea, this concealer glides on like butter and nourishes the delicate under-eye area.

Centella Asiatica: Sensitive Skin’s Best Friend?

by KR Bautista on Aug 09 2021
For many of us, Centella asiatica is a trendy ingredient that’s brand-new to the skincare industry. But what if we informed you that people have used it for thousands of years? Centella asiatica, a perennial herb primarily cultivate in Asia, grows in boggy, marshy areas. And while it’s become increasingly popular in cosmetic products, it’s traditionally used in both food and several systems of medicine, such as Southern Herbology in Vietnam, ayurvedic medicine in India, and hanbang in South Korea. In a more contemporary context, Centella asiatica has been a staple in South Korean skincare for a few years now, and Centella asiatica products are often marketed as cica creams or tiger grass cream. And while U.S. brands have occasionally featured it, we are now witnessing a boom, coinciding with the growing international reputation of K-beauty. Cica creams became a staple in Korean skincare because they are considered incredibly soothing, believed to calm inflammation, improve collagen synthesis, and maintain skin hydration. Here’s a more in-depth breakdown of Centella asiatica’s potential benefits. Anti-Aging Plant-based ingredients, known for their anti-aging benefits, often attribute this to their contained antioxidants. And in the case of Centella asiatica this is true. And yet, its properties appear to be a bit more complex than that. Centella asiatica is rich in a type of antioxidant known as flavonoids, as well as an active compound known as madecassoside. Flavonoids neutralizes free radicals, madecassoside enhance blood circulation and collagen production. And when it comes to keeping the skin firm and youthful, collagen is nothing to joke about. Collagen is one of the most important proteins in the human body, and it’s one of the main components of bones, skin, hair, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Collagen is sort of like the building blocks of our skin, and it’s what keeps our skin elastic and firm. But as we age, our bodies produce less collagen over time, often causing our skin to loosen and sag. According to Advances in Dermatology and Allergology, Centella asiatica can boost collagen production by increasing fibroblasts, aiding in anti-aging. Moisturizing Many of us require more than just occasional lotion to manage dry skin – we need additional skincare support! So how can Centella asiatica help? Besides shielding the skin from pollutants and UV damage, Centella asiatica can repair and strengthen the skin barrier, crucial for retaining skin moisture. Soothing For those with highly irritable skin, Centella asiatica is more than gentle, in fact, it’s often an extremely soothing ingredient. In fact, history widely associates it with healing and nurturing. This is likely due to its active compounds, known as asiaticosides. These asiaticosides are a type of saponin. Saponins offer numerous health benefits, with a special focus on asiaticosides for soothing red, itchy, inflamed skin. In one study from The International Journal of Molecular Sciences, it was found that Centella asiatica helped reduce inflammation associated with eczema. Plus, Centella asiatica is rich in beta-carotene, amino acids, and fatty acids, which are super soothing for sensitive, irritated skin. Clearing When you have severe acne, it’s all too easy to reach a point where you just don’t want to try any more solutions. So many products just seem to make acne worse, especially in the case of harsh astringents. Centella is anything but harsh, and yet, it may still help prevent the onset of breakouts! Theorists suggest that madecassic acid, an active compound, reduces acne inflammation and prevents acne scars. While formal research on Centella asiatica as an acne treatment is only at its beginning, the evidence so far is promising. In a study, Centella asiatica's madecassoside reduced P. acnes-induced inflammation, a key acne factor. Centella Asiatica in Miracle 7-in1 Primer Serum If you're keen on enhancing your beauty routine with this remarkable plant, it's readily available! There’s an ever-growing number of products containing Centella asiatica, from creams to serums. And with its soothing, skin-protecting properties, it only makes sense to have it on all day! When we created our Miracle 7-in-1 Serum Primer, we deliberately looked to Korean skincare for our inspiration.  Besides centella, this serum-primer hybrid contains soothing, preserving botanicals like fermented ginseng, licorice, chamomile, and green tea. The result?  Skin so naturally flawless, you might just rethink applying foundation! The Miracle 7-in-1 Serum Primer effortlessly glides, imparting a velvety finish, restoring vitality, blurring imperfections, and plumping skin.

The Best Way to Treat Sunburn Naturally

by KR Bautista on Jul 26 2021
Sun protection is something we all need to take seriously: we’re often reminded to wear SPF, bring a hat, and stay in the shade whenever possible. But sometimes, our sun protection isn’t perfect. For instance, we may forget to reapply sunscreen, or skip it altogether, or we’re not wearing a formula that’s strong enough. Bottom line: sunburn happens sometimes, and it’s never fun.  And like any wound or irritation on our skin, time is going to be a factor. However, there are natural ways to help speed up the healing process. With summer in full swing, we’re going to break down what to do in each stage of sunburn. 1. Sun Exposure It’s probably no surprise to anyone that sunburn starts with sun exposure.  And sun exposure can happen fast. If you’re in direct sunlight without sunscreen, sunburn can actually occur in as little as 15 minutes!Catching sunburn early on can be tricky though, because it’s not as prominent as it will be in the next few hours. That’s why prevention is so important when it comes to sunburn. So always wear SPF, even if it’s for a quick walk with your dog, or to step out and grab your mail! 2. Here Comes The Burn Typically, sunburns aren’t too obvious at first, but they’ll probably make their presence known in the next 2 hours. As your skin cells on the surface become inflamed, skin appears red, and feels irritated and hot to the touch, marking the onset of sunburn. In the first few hours of sunburn, the most important thing to do is hydrate and take measures to cool down, since your skin is going to draw fluids from the body to heal itself. 3. Sore, Burning Skin After about 6 hours, sunburn will typically become sore and may sting more intensely, and blisters may form as the immune system protects the skin. Your skin may also feel more sensitive to heat, especially in a hot shower or bath. For the next few days, use lukewarm water and soothing ingredients to ease irritation: Chamomile Chamomile’s been used for centuries in folk medicine for their soothing effects, high antioxidant content, and sweet, delicate scent. Aloe Vera Aloe vera may be one of the most classic ingredients for treating sunburn, and for good reason! Aloe vera, with its hydrating and anti-inflammatory properties like aloin, can soothe and cool sunburn effectively. Green Tea Green tea is another classic ingredient for soothing inflammation. It's skin-friendly and packed with antioxidants like tannic acid and theobromine, which can boost damaged, irritated skin. 4. The Peeling After about 48 hours, most sunburns will feel significantly less uncomfortable than those initial 6 hours as the skin sheds off those dead, damaged cells to reveal the new ones underneath. Unfortunately, that means your skin is going to peel a bit, and it may be tempting to pick at the dead skin. However, experts recommend that you don’t do this, as it may risk more irritation. Instead, allow the process to ride itself out and support it with a good moisturizer. For a lot of people, this is the hardest phase, not only because the process is so close to being over, but the urge to pick can be intense. Your skin is working double-time to heal itself, so be patient with it and be kind to yourself.

Natural Radiance Unveiled: 5 Daily Practices to Cultivate Bare-Faced Beauty

by KR Bautista on Jul 19 2021
Natural radiance is the main goal of Emani, it has always been to find makeup that’s gentle and enhances and then some. Makeup that doesn’t just sit comfortably on the skin, but actively nourishes it to promote healing and natural radiance. But we know it takes more than makeup to build skin confidence, so we want to do more. Today, we have five ways to help you cultivate your own healthy glow and enhance your natural radiance, showing you how to make it shine with or without makeup. 5 Tips For Cultivating Natural Radiance: 1. Drink More Water (Seriously) We know you’ve heard this one a million times, already, but for good reason! Water is crucial to keeping your skin healthy, because when the body is dehydrated, regular repair functions are less efficient, and wrinkles become more pronounced as the skin sags from lack of moisture. To keep your skin plump, radiant, and healthy, water is absolutely essential.  And make sure to drink throughout the day! We often believe that we can just chug 8 ounces in one sitting, but this is actually a mistake: when your body receives a sudden onslaught of hydration, it won’t be able to absorb it all at once, and you’ll inevitably pee it out. So make sure to hydrate steadily and consistently. 2. Eat More Plants We’re a big proponent of a plant-based diet, not only because it’s kinder to animals & the planet, but because of the benefits it gives your body! Fruits and vegetables are loaded with vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and antioxidants--nutrients your skin needs to stay happy and glowing. And even if you’re not vegan, simply incorporating more leafy greens, berries, and citrus fruits will make a huge difference in your health, and you’ll see it reflected in your natural radiant skin. 3. Wear Sunscreen Every Day You can stock up your skincare regimen with every anti-aging elixir on the market, but this won’t matter if you’re skipping sunscreen. Did you know that the #1 cause of premature aging is ultraviolet rays? Not only does sun exposure increase your risk of dark spots and uneven skin tone, but it can also contribute to wrinkles, fine lines, and saggier skin.  Sunscreen protects the skin from UVA and UVB damage, helping to maintain a youthful and vibrant appearance with regular use. When choosing a sunscreen, we recommend mineral-based or "physical" sunscreens over chemical sunscreens. Chemical sunscreens, like those containing oxybenzone, can potentially harm sea life and coral reefs. 4. Sweat It Out Ever notice your skin has a bit more of a glow when it’s covered in sweat? Believe it or not, sweating can do wonders for your skin by increasing circulation and raising endorphins. Just one more reason to get out and move! Whether you jog, cycle, do bikram yoga, or simply relax in a sauna, always make sure to shower immediately afterward. 5. Use Mineral Makeup So many products out there claim to be radiant and gentle on skin, and lo and behold, it still makes you break out.  Instead of traditional foundations, try using a mineral-based formula. Mineral makeup is exceptionally gentle on skin and suitable for those with high sensitivities. And some even prevent blemishes with their nourishing properties!

All About Bronzing: Your Guide to the Perfect Summer Glow

by KR Bautista on Jun 10 2021
Bronzing is a simple way to give your features a more sculpted, structured look.  And thanks to the sun-kissed glow it gives your skin, it’s the perfect step for a radiant, vibrant summer look without tanning your skin and risking sun damage. But for a lot of us, bronzing may seem intimidating, or even off-putting, suggesting imagery like harsh lines, a blotchy, dirty-looking finish, or too much orange. While looks like these can sometimes give bronzer a bad rap, keep in mind that all forms of makeup have a “too much” or “incorrect” version. For instance, blush can give anyone a lovely bit of color, but the wrong shade or application can leave anyone looking like a clown! Just so, bronzer looks beautiful when it’s done correctly, and learning to do so is simpler than you think! Bronzing vs Contouring Before we learn how to bronze, let’s talk about how it’s different from contouring. Just over a year ago, makeup was all about creating sharp edges through contouring. Now, bronzer is making a comeback in a big way. But you might be wondering: what’s the difference between bronzing and contouring, anyway? These two methods are indeed quite similar, but there are a few key differences. Contouring can be used to create sharp lines for a chiseled, hyper-sculpted look in the cheek bones, jawlines and nose. And while bronzer creates a similar effect, it’s much more subtle and not quite as severe. Bronzing and contouring have distinct purposes. Bronzing adds warmth to the face, while contouring creates shadows and highlights. Bronzers typically have warmer tones, while contouring products have cooler, grey-toned colors. Bronzing is a beginner-friendly method to add definition to your look, compared to the more time-consuming and skill-requiring practice of contouring. The key is choosing the right bronzer. Choosing The Right Bronzer Question: While bronzers may initially appear similar, the variety of formulas available on the market is vast and seemingly endless! When choosing the right bronzer for you, consider the formula and color of your bronzer.  Generally, sticking with a talc-free formula is recommended, and make sure all of the ingredients are non comedogenic. Your skin type will determine the right bronzer for you, whether it is in cream or powder form. For those with normal, oily, or combination skin, powder bronzers are usually the best option, while a cream formula may work better for those with dry skin.  If you’re having a hard time finding a cream bronzer with skin-loving ingredients, here’s a great hack: purchase a cream-based foundation in a “bronzing” shade! When selecting a shade, choose one that is only two or three shades deeper than your natural skin tone for a natural, healthy glow. And while a warmer tone is what you want, make sure you’re not getting something too orange! How To Bronze For The Perfect Summer Glow When using bronzer, treat it as one of the final steps in your makeup routine. By the time you’ve applied it, you should’ve already put on your foundation, concealer and blush. Using a fluffy powder brush, load on the bronzer and tap out any excess product. Starting at your forehead, sweep a sheer bit of bronzer across the edge of your hairline and down your temple. Apply bronzer along the apples of your cheeks, slightly below where you'd normally apply blush, starting from the temple. Make sure to thoroughly blend out any harsh lines. Finally, sweep the bronzer along the underside of your jaw, once again blending out. Using a powder bronzer? Apply a touch of setting powder to even out your skin and prevent patches or blotchiness. If using a cream-based bronzer, apply before powder, and use the powder to set afterward.

Dry or Dehydrated Skin: Which One Are You?

by KR Bautista on May 11 2021
Now that spring is in full swing, the sun’s starting to shine again and the flowers are blooming. But when your skin is feeling dull and dry, it can be hard to enjoy the season. And what’s even worse? When no moisturizer seems to work! Don’t worry: your skin is not just difficult. In fact, you may be treating your skin for dryness, when in fact it could just be dehydrated.  And in this article, we’re giving quick tips on how to know if your skin is dry or dehydrated, and what you can do about it! The Fundamental Differences So you may be thinking: how can there be a difference between dry and dehydrated skin? Is there really a difference? While there are several similarities, there are certainly some fundamental differences between dry and dehydrated skin. When you have dry skin, this is simply the genetic structure on your skin: there are fewer sebaceous glands on the body, so your skin tends to produce less oil overall. One of the plus sides to dry skin is that breakouts are less common. One of the down sides, however, is that your skin may age more rapidly if not properly cared for. Dehydrated skin, on the other hand, is more of a temporary condition caused by outside factors; specifically, a lack of water. Anyone can experience dehydrated skin, even if their skin type is on the oilier side. The bottom line is this: dry skin means less oil, and dehydrated skin means less water. Still not sure which one you’re experiencing? Here’s a little trick. How To Determine If Your Skin Is Dry Or Dehydrated? So here’s a quick way to tell whether you have dry or dehydrated skin, and it’s known as the pinch test. While this isn’t a surefire way to determine what’s going on with your skin, it can give you a better perspective overall. For the pinch test, gently pinch a bit of skin that’s easy to gather but still a little taut, such as your cheek, forearm, or the back of your hand. If your skin takes a few moments to bounce back, it is likely that you are experiencing dehydration. If your skin snaps back into place instantly, it is probable that you are not dehydrated and may simply have dry skin. Other signs of dehydrated skin include dark circles under your eyes, fine lines and wrinkles with heightened sensitivity, and itchiness.  On the other hand, dry skin tends to involve flakiness and dullness, redness, and irritation. Additionally, those with dry skin may also experience conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. Whether it’s dry or dehydrated, there are ways to nourish and soothe your skin. And once you know which condition you’re experiencing, you can determine which methods to go by. What To Do For Dry Skin When you have dry skin, moisturizing is the name of the game. Treating your skin with moisturizing emollients is going to help your skin retain water more effectively, and can preserve a more youthful look in the long run. Nut and plant-based oils make wonderful moisturizers for dry skin, including coconut oil, avocado oil, and jojoba oil. Hyaluronic acid also does wonders by penetrating the skin with hydration. In fact, hyaluronic acid holds up to 1000x its weight in water! Aside from skincare, sleeping with a humidifier can also keep your skin from drying out at night. If your dry skin’s frequently accompanied by irritation, redness, and rashes, it’s always a good idea to contact a dermatologist about the best course of action, as you may have a deeper underlying condition. What To Do For Dehydrated Skin If your skin is dehydrated, your body’s dehydrated. So above all, make sure you’re drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Incorporating foods with high water content is also useful here, so go for snacks like watermelon, cucumbers, celery, and strawberries when you’re feeling peckish. That being said, you can also hydrate your skin with ingredients like glycerin, aloe vera, and ceramides. Ready for happier, healthier skin? On our blog, you’ll find countless strategies and tips for feeding your natural glow. {{SHOW ME MORE BLOGS LIKE THIS}}

10 Reasons We Need Mom in Our Lives

by KR Bautista on May 04 2021
Mom or mother is one of the most important people in our lives. She is the first person we ever meet and our constant presence for at least the first 18 years. As a company that highly values all women, we wanted to take a moment to celebrate mothers in particular. Here Are 10 Reasons Why There’s No One Quite Like Mom. 1. Their Nurturing Touch Our earliest memories often involve Mom kissing our boo-boos when we fell off our bikes. Her kisses somehow made the pain feel a little less intense. A mother's touch is truly magical, capable of healing scraped knees and broken hearts alike. And this is actually huge for us in the long run! When mom’s the emotional backbone of the family, we’re raised to be more confident, emotionally intelligent individuals. This nurturing is one of the key elements that make mothers so special and unique. No matter how old you are, you can always go to Mom to ease whatever trouble you’re going through. 2. She Always Put You First From birth, you were always Mom's top priority, even with a busy schedule. Moms prioritize and teach us selfless love, a precious gift. Also, it’s a huge part of what makes us better friends, spouses, and parents ourselves. This is part of why we appreciate our mothers and the incredible role they play in our emotional development. 3. She Was The First To Teach You Kindness Kindness is everything, and while many of us are just naturally compassionate, we learn so much of it watching our mothers. Children are taught that they can be anything, but above all, being kind is most important. 4. She’s The One With The Answer When we were kids, we all had those memories of asking Dad a question, or permission for something, and what was the answer? “Go ask your mother.” Now let’s be clear: we know moms are still human, and they’re by no means perfect, but when in doubt, we’ve always gone to mom for help. Whether it’s asking where the car keys are, or how to file our taxes, “Mum's the word”...literally! 5. Confidence and Body Acceptance Our moms didn’t just give us our bodies; they also taught us how to love them. Research has shown that a daughter’s body image is strongly influenced by the way her mother views her own body. Because of this, our mothers play a huge role in body acceptance; when they show us that they love their bodies, we’re encouraged to do the same. It’s part of what makes your mother so special to you. 6. She Taught You It’s Okay to Cry When the world feels like too much and we’re feeling overwhelmed, our mothers have always been there to let us know it’s okay to cry. She’s there for you when you need to let out your frustrations and fears, and she’s there for you when you’re ready to get back up. 7. She Was Your First Nutritionist When we’re eating in a way that’s balanced and healthy, there’s a good chance it’s because your mom instilled healthy eating habits in you at an early age. It’s not always easy to make sure a tiny human is consistently fed, and the fact that they made sure you had three meals a day, and made sure you ate your vegetables, just proves what a superhero they really are. 8. She’s Your Biggest Cheerleader Whether it was putting your childhood drawings on the fridge, or when she cheered you on at your high school volleyball games, your mom was always there to cheer you on, and she’s always there to make sacrifices for you so your life could be better. Whenever we set out to succeed in something, our moms are there to give us words of encouragement, and maybe even some snacks. The power of a mother's encouragement is beyond measure. 9. She’s Always There to Shoulder Your Burdens In one study, teenage girls were asked to make an impromptu educational speech--something so many of us dread as teens--and while they did, their mothers were instructed to either sit silently next to her or hold her hand. In addition, this study observed that in the groups where mothers held their daughter’s hand, their anxiety was lower. Mother-daughter pairs with strong relationships experience less anxiety even if the mother only sat silently next to her. Also, this is a great example of how mothers are there to shoulder our emotional burdens, making the load a little lighter for us. Their support is one of the reasons why we need our moms. 10. The Importance Of Self-Care Our mothers were the first person to teach us that we need to take care of ourselves, and sometimes, pampering is essential. And for most of us, we developed our interest in makeup by watching our mothers as children. There was something so enchanting about watching mom apply her lipstick and mascara, and it made us go “I can’t wait to do that when I’m older!” And in small moments like these, mothers taught us so much about enjoying our beauty and loving ourselves. This emphasis on self-care is also one of the special qualities that make mothers so important in our lives.

Causes of Acne

by KR Bautista on Apr 29 2021
When we were teenagers, acne was a fact of life. If you didn’t have at least one day when you were fumbling around your locker looking for concealer, you were a lucky teen, indeed.  But what about when you experience acne in your 30s or your 40s? Wait a second, I thought I was done with this! As frustrating as it is, adult acne is actually extremely common. According to one study, as much as 22% of women in the United States experience acne, while men make up only 3%. And while some women are lucky enough to find that “miracle product” for their skin, it simply doesn’t work like that for everyone. There are a number of reasons why you’re experiencing acne in your adult life, and we want you to know that it’s not because you have poor hygiene, and it’s not your fault. If you’re experiencing persistent acne, consulting your doctor or dermatologist is always the best course of action. However, it may be possible that a lifestyle factor is the cause of your acne, meaning it could be something you have control over. Common Causes Of Acne Let's discuss common acne causes and how to regain your skin's clarity! Remember: Clearing skin takes time, but it's valuable to progress gradually and learn your skin's future responses. Hormonal Changes If you’re experiencing blemishes along the jawline that are deep and feel sore to the touch, it’s very possible that you’re experiencing hormonal acne. Hormonal acne occurs when there’s an increase in androgens in the body, leading to the sebaceous glands producing more sebum and the pores increasing in size. And while hormonal acne is often associated with adolescence, women can experience it well into their 30s and 40s. It’s normal for anyone to experience hormonal acne, but if you’re experiencing it frequently, it’s heavily encouraged to consult your doctor or dermatologist. Consulting a professional can uncover your hormonal imbalance's source. Medications like birth control or prescription retinol might effectively address it. You’re Over-Washing Your Face In the past, people believed that maintaining a clean face was crucial to prevent acne, and they would blame insufficient washing if acne was present. However, this is actually not true; in fact, over-washing your face can strip your skin of the natural oils that keep it healthy and hydrated. And when your skin becomes stripped, this can actually cause the oil glands to kick into overtime, resulting in excess oil and clogged pores. Diet During your teenage years, you might have received warnings that chocolate could cause acne. While not entirely accurate, studies suggest specific foods, especially carb-rich ones like bagels, bread, and chips, might exacerbate acne. And while the research is limited, it has been suggested that dairy may induce acne in some individuals. Mucous-producing foods, like this one, can strain digestion, especially for lactose-intolerant individuals, potentially triggering cystic acne. Suspect dietary link to acne? Skip the food in question to gauge impact on skin. Experiment wisely. Remember: while your acne may not immediately clear up, it’s still a good sign if it doesn’t worsen! Stress If you’ve been feeling extra stressed out lately, stress may be behind your worsening breakouts. While stress isn’t necessarily a direct cause of acne, it certainly isn’t helping it. Research indicates stress delays wound healing, including acne recovery. Prioritize relaxation for healthier skin. When pimples heal slowly, they remain on the skin longer, risking the chance of only getting worse. Handling stress isn't simple—during big projects or life changes like moving, feeling overwhelmed is natural. But during these times, practicing stress management strategies can be extremely helpful. Prioritize self-care during stress: meditate, exercise, indulge in hobbies. Ensure ample sleep. Your well-being matters. When in doubt, talk to your physician. The team at Emani is all about helping others to live a healthier and happier life. Leave a comment, we'd love to hear from you.

6 Ways to Adopt a More Eco-Friendly Beauty Routine

by Michelle Doan on Apr 13 2021
Eco-friendly: It's not a secret, the beauty industry hasn’t always been great to the planet. Makeup's past includes plastic waste, harmful chemicals, animal exploitation, and irritating ingredients. These contribute to environmental damage. The sustainability movement has expanded into makeup and skincare, promoting eco-friendly practices. With more eco-friendly brands available, adopting an environmentally-friendly beauty routine is easier than ever. This Earth Day, we have 6 tips for a sustainable, eco-friendly lifestyle. Start with one or two sustainable habits instead of overwhelming yourself with too many changes at once. Gradually add more habits as you go. 6 Ways To Adopt A More Eco-Friendly Beauty Routine 1. Recycle The Empties We realize that this one’s a given, but it’s worth reminding ourselves to recycle our empty makeup containers. This is because even if we do normally recycle, it’s more so with food containers, where recycling is more accessible. But when you run out of makeup, it’s all too easy to just toss it in the bathroom wastebasket without thought. If you find yourself doing this, consider placing a bin in your bathroom just for empty beauty containers. Nowadays, there are eco-friendly, even dual bins with a section just for recyclables! 2. Sustainable Tools Of course, sustainable beauty isn’t just about the makeup itself; brushes and applicators are also a factor. If you find yourself going through makeup brushes a little too often, try investing more in ones that are built to last. And to minimize your plastic waste, brushes with a wooden handle make a great alternative; the same goes for hair brushes, too! In addition to brushes, you can replace cotton pads with reusable ones made of terry cloth, and there are plenty of long-lasting makeup sponges available as alternatives. 3. Stop Using Makeup Wipes Makeup wipes can be super convenient for those nights when you’re too tired to wash your face, but we hate to say it: makeup wipes do far more harm than good. Face wipes are non-recyclable products that contain plastic, and they’re responsible for 93% of sewage blockage. On top of that, over 9.3 million wet wipes are flushed down toilets every day. And to make matters worse, face wipes aren’t very good for your skin, either. Most face wipes, even those claiming to be “gentle,” contain harsh chemicals that strip your skin of its natural oils. Plus, dragging a wipe across your skin can irritate and damage the delicate capillaries in the skin. Instead of makeup wipes, try using a double cleansing method to remove makeup, dirt and sweat. To do so, start with an oil-based cleanser or cleansing balm, and follow up with a foaming, water-based or gel cleanser. And for those nights when you just need a quick fix, a reusable cotton pad with micellar water makes a great replacement for wipes. 4. OPT For Reusable Bags Reusable shopping bags have gotten a lot more popular in the past, but they’re not just for groceries! If you’re already bringing reusable bags to the supermarket, expand this practice taking them when you’re shopping for makeup. Plus, there are bags available in all shapes and sizes, so when you’re traveling, you can replace your disposable plastic bags with reusable ones. 5. Choose Cruelty-Free If you haven’t already, start opting for cruelty-free beauty. While more brands are turning to cruelty-free practices, there are still all too many that follow conventional methods of testing. And in these cruel practices, chemicals in cosmetics are tested on rats, rabbits, cats, dogs, and monkeys, who spend their entire lives suffering in cages. These methods are savage and outdated, as there’s technology now that allows us to test without torturing innocent creatures. When you choose cruelty-free, you’re not supporting these practices, and you’ll find that the formulas are more gentle while still effective. 6. Use Mineral-Based SPF Out of all the things you can do to prevent aging, sunscreen is the most recommended. However, sunscreen has a dark side: most conventional sunscreens use a chemical formula, which uses chemicals like oxybenzone and homosalate. And while these chemicals are effective at preventing sun damage, they can be incredibly damaging to our planet and our bodies. Residual sunscreen in oceans harms coral reefs. Oxybenzone damages reefs, while homosalate disrupts endocrine system. The next time you shop for a new sunscreen, try a mineral-based or “physical” sunscreen. These sunscreens protect your skin from the sun with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which are gentle on skin and aquatic life.

Daytime & Nighttime Skincare, Defined

by KR Bautista on Apr 06 2021
Skincare can be simple: some women cleanse and moisturize, and that’s that. And while this is certainly better than no skincare, it’s not going to be the most effective regimen for those looking to fade acne, diminish the appearance of fine lines & wrinkles, or prevent further aging. If you want results for your skin, incorporating certain products into your routine can go a long way.  However, the world of skincare is ever-growing, with new products entering the market every day. On top of that, brands are constantly telling us we need this serum or that we need this sheet mask, and it’s easy to become overwhelmed. And then of course, there’s nighttime skincare and daytime skincare. And this is where those new to treating their skin can get especially confused. So, what type of skincare do we apply in the morning? What do we use before bed? Here, we’ll break down these two routines, step by step. Daytime Skincare Typically, your daytime skincare routine is meant to be more simple than at night. We’ll go more into nightly skincare later, but when it comes to daytime, skincare is all about protection.  Namely, protection from sun damage.  Above all, sun damage is probably the biggest cause of aging, and excess sun exposure can even lead to premature wrinkles, not to mention a higher risk for developing skin cancer. This is why out of all your daily skincare steps, SPF is going to be the most important. As for cleansing, some women actually benefit from skipping this step. This might sound crazy to some, but for those with extra dry skin, a morning cleanse may over-strip the skin, leading to exacerbated oil production and breakouts. In these cases, a thorough rinse with cool or lukewarm water does the job just fine.  That being said, everyone should cleanse their faces in the evening! If you do cleanse in the morning, follow up with a toner to restore pH balance, which can be thrown off balance from cleansing. When looking for a toner, make sure to avoid alcohol, since this can dry out the skin! Serums are optional in the daytime, but a good vitamin C serum can make a great option, since its antioxidant properties can help protect the skin from free radicals. Niacinamide is also a popular choice, thanks to its oil-balancing properties. But whether you use serum or not, always moisturize before applying sunscreen. Daytime Skincare Breakdown: Cleanser, or rinse with water Toner Serum (optional) Moisturizer SPF Nighttime Skincare While daytime skincare is all about protecting your skin, nighttime skincare is for recovery.  This is where the term “beauty sleep” truly comes into play: when we go to sleep, our bodies use the time to perform a wide variety of repairs, and this includes the skin.  When you give your skin the right nutrients before bed, you can help strengthen and improve these repairs and wake up with a healthier glow. For evening skincare, start with cleansing. Cleansing is necessary to remove any dirt, sweat, makeup and sunscreen from the day. For a more effective, thorough cleanse, consider a double-cleansing method, which consists of an oil-based cleanser, cleansing balm, or micellar water, followed by a foaming or water-based cleanser. As with daytime skincare, follow up with a toner and continue with nightly treatments. This is a great time to apply products containing actives like retinol, AHAs, BHAs, or niacinamide. Read more about actives here! After you’ve applied your actives, a night cream can be a great step for those with dry or puffy under eye areas. Eye creams are going to be more hydrating and emollient than your regular moisturizer, giving the most delicate part of your face an extra boost. Finish your nightly routine with your moisturizer. While you may use the same moisturizer you use during the day, the evening is also a great time to wear a thicker formula to lock in all the goodies you just packed on. Here’s the evening breakdown: Double-cleanse Toner Treatments Eye cream Moisturizer Sweet dreams!!

The Foolproof Way to Apply Concealer

by KR Bautista on Mar 25 2021
At this moment, two things are certain in makeup: The natural, “no-makeup” look is more in than ever before, and concealer formulas have evolved to offer coverage to the fullest. But why, then, is under eye concealer so difficult? If you’ve struggled with creating a look that’s not cakey or riddled with creases, no matter what concealer you use, trust us: you’re not alone, and there’s a way to fix it. In 5 simple steps, we’re going to show you how to create a foolproof under eye concealer look.  No caking.  No creases. Just gorgeous, flawless coverage. Step 1: Start With A Hydrating Primer Before you even begin to apply your concealer, consider the canvas you’re applying to; AKA, your skin. Our under eye areas are not only delicate, but unlike the rest of your skin, they have no oil glands! Under-eye areas are typically drier, making wrinkles and creases more noticeable with concealers. Luckily, prepping your skin with hydration beforehand is going to work wonders for your makeup wear. Using rich, thick eye creams at night is great for skincare, but they can feel heavy when applied under concealer. That’s why it’s important to stick with a lightweight, serum-like consistency. Our Perfect 10 Serum Moisturizer blurs, smooths, and moisturizes the skin, making it ideal for your eyes. Step 2: Choose The Right Concealer We know there are a lot of concealers out there, and we know all too well that many just don’t  do your skin any favors. This is because when it comes to concealer, it’s all about texture. Your concealer’s texture is going to have a direct effect on how much crease you’ll end up with. It may be tempting to use those thick concealers with promises of full coverage, but if they have a dry, inflexible texture, the pigment won’t even matter. However, choosing a creamy concealer that actually moves with your skin is going to do you wonders, and big bonus if the formula contains vitamin C for a boost of brightness! That’s why we always recommend our HD Corrective Concealer + NIacinamide.  Step 3: Order Matters Believe it or not, the order in which you use your concealer depends a lot on the type of foundation you’re using, because it’s going to seriously impact the way your concealer and foundation blend together.  The biggest thing to avoid is applying a liquid over a powder, as this is a surefire way to wind up with caking and creases. But don’t worry, this step is actually pretty simple! Here’s the rule of thumb:  If you’re using a powder formula, like the Flawless Matte Foundation, apply your concealer first. If you’re using a liquid formula like our Hydrawear 12HR Liquid Foundation, apply concealer second. And as tempting as it may be, try not to apply foundation to your under eye area; this extra layer can leave a cakey look when concealer comes in! Step 4: The Application Now, for the application. To apply your concealer, we especially recommend the use of a damp beauty sponge for streak-free blending, but a concealer brush can work too! Just keep in mind that you may need to do a little more blending if this is the case. Using your ring finger, apply your concealer along your under eye area in small dots, and with your sponge, gently dab along the spots to push in the concealer. Pro tip: you don’t need to apply concealer all the way up to the lash line for good coverage. Instead, blend up toward your lash line as needed. Step 5: Set To Perfect Now, the final step may be the trickiest, and that’s the powder setting. While setting is crucial to long-lasting wear, it’s easy to overdo it, and this is often when the creases come in big time. The trick, however, is to use a powder that’s either a shade lighter than your skin tone, or transparent like our Bye Bye Shine and stick to the mantra “less is more.”  Because remember: you can always build up your coverage, but you really don’t want to start over! To apply, take your damp sponge once more, and lightly dab it into your setting powder. Similar to what we did with the concealer, gently dab along the under eye area to push in the powder. A little goes a long way! Now that you’ve set to perfect, you’re ready to take on the day with eyes that look bright, open and awake! Go get ‘em, gorgeous!

5 Ingredients Your Lips Need Right Now!

by KR Bautista on Mar 11 2021
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but there are just some things that everyone wants. And one of them is soft, supple, kissable lips! However, revive your lips with nourishing ingredients for smooth, plumped skin. Also, say goodbye to chapped, cracked lips with our expert tips. Here are 5 natural ingredients that your lips will love, and spoiler alert. 1. Vitamin E Vitamin E is one of those ingredients you’ll almost always see in a lip balm formula, and for good reason!  It is a valuable antioxidant in lip care. It moisturizes and nourishes, making it ideal for cracked, irritated lips. Evidence suggests that vitamin E boosts circulation and promotes skin renewal. This is crucial for repairing environmentally damaged lips. And thanks to vitamin E’s anti-inflammatory properties, it can have a near-instant soothing effect. 2. Apricot Kernel Oil People highly regard apricot kernel oil, which is pressed from apricot pits, as a top skin oil. It is closely resembles sebum, providing essential hydration and lubrication. Also, as our lip lack sebaceous glands, apricot kernel oil offers much-needed moisture they can't produce on their own. Apricot oil is also high in antioxidants your skin thrives on, like vitamins A, C, and E, in addition to linolenic and oleic acid to keep your lips extra soft. 3. Sunflower Extract Sunflowers contain vitamin E, which helps protect lips from free radical damage, and they are rich in a unique antioxidant called sesamol, which minimizes sun damage. Phytosterols, found in sunflower extract, also contribute to keeping the lips plump and glowing, while enhancing skin barrier function. 4. Rice Bran Rice bran is one of those ingredients that you’ll find in tons of our products, thanks to their versatility in products and their gentleness on skin. However, nourish skin cells with nutrients like vitamins and antioxidants keeps the skin looking young and healthy. People know that nurturing skin cells with nutrients such as vitamins and antioxidants plays a crucial role in maintaining youthful and healthy-looking skin. On top of that, rice bran helps deliver moisture to the skin while helping to improve the skin’s elasticity while evening out the complexion. In addition, it may even help reduce signs of aging! 5. Castor Seed Oil Castor oil is cold-pressed from the seeds of the Ricinus communis plant, and makes a fantastic source of omega fatty acids to help hydrate the skin. It is more than a great moisturizer, though! Omega fatty acids like ricinoleic acid help retain adequate moisture levels, while encouraging tissue repair and skin cell turnover. This nourishing oil also acts as a humectant, meaning that it’s going to encourage moisture retention even in dry weather conditions, and creates a thick, protective shield around your lips. What’s your favorite ingredient for keeping your lips healthy and soft? Leave it down in the comments!

Foundation Guide: Never Choose the Wrong Shade Ever Again!

by KR Bautista on Mar 02 2021
Foundation shade: we know it’s been said, but we’ll say it again: We’re home more, these days.  And while it can make the use of makeup feel less necessary, it’s actually the perfect time to experience beauty just for yourself. Because we all could use more self-care! And enjoying your own beauty can mean trying a new look, experimenting with formulas, or using makeup as a way to break the daily at-home hum-drum. But we’ll admit it: there are still some things you just can’t do at home. For one, trying a foundation shade before buying it.  And when you feel like all you can do is guess online, this can make buying any new foundation feel like a risk. Luckily, we’ve got just the thing for you! Today, we have the foolproof guide to finding your perfect foundation shade—from the comfort of your home. And it’s so easy and reliable, it might just become your go-to strategy for good! Your Skin Type You may be thinking: texture? I thought we were choosing a shade! But here’s the thing: when it comes to finding the perfect foundation, the texture is just as crucial as the shade.  You see, it won’t matter how perfectly coordinated your foundation is if the formula gives you the wrong kind of coverage or finish. That’s why companies nowadays offer so many different types of formulas: to cater to all the different types of skin! If your skin is more on the oily side, it’s generally best to stick with a formula that will absorb excess moisture. A powdered formula, like our Flawless Matte Foundation, will keep oil in check throughout the day with the help of high-impact minerals, while rosemary and grape seed extract help promote balance. If you have normal or dry skin, on the other hand, a liquid formula, like our Hydrawear Plus will give you that flawless coverage you want without giving you that “dusty” finish. Determining Your Undertone Now, onto shades, for real this time. When you choose your shade, two factors will be taken into account: skin tone and undertone.Skin tone is, quite simply, the general area in which your skin falls on the spectrum, which brands typically refer to as light, medium, and deep or rich. And most people know their skin tone with just a quick look.Undertone, however, isn’t quite as obvious. Undertones refer to the degree of cool and warm-toned pigments in your skin, and can be either cool, warm, or neutral. You may already have a good idea what undertone you are. For instance, you might’ve noticed you look stunning in gold jewelry, while silver just looks...off. Or maybe you can rock a magenta top, but that peach bridesmaid dress hasn’t seen the light of day since your cousin’s wedding. And this is all because of undertone! Still confused? We’ve got you! Your undertone is something you can determine all on your own at home. One of the most tried and tested methods is one we already mentioned: jewelry pairing. Try holding up some gold jewelry to your skin, then some silver. If gold has you glowing, you’re probably a warm undertone. If the silver makes your skin pop, you’re a cool undertone. Another method is grabbing something fuschia—whether it’s a scarf, a hat, or even a lipstick, and compare it to something else in a vibrant orange or coral. If the fuchsia looks best, it means it’s complementing the bluish-pink tones of your cool undertone. But if that orange is really doing something special, it’s loving the olive in your warm tone! And if you’re wondering: what if I look incredible in everything? One: you’re lucky and we’re jealous. Two: you just might be a neutral undertone, meaning you have an equal balance of both pigments. Checking the color of the veins around your wrists can determine your undertone. Greenish veins indicate a warm undertone. If they’re true blue, you’re cool. The Selfie/Swatch Test Comparing a photo of your skin to online swatches ensures an accurate shade match. But let’s be clear: the days of forearm swatch tests are over! Using your arm as a shade reference can be quite unreliable, and here’s why: The skin on your arms probably doesn’t match the skin on your face. The difference in shade between our arms and faces is due to varying levels of sun exposure. And even your entire body does happen to be one singular even shade, you won’t get an accurate read without the right lighting. Comparing your arm to swatches on a screen in a dark room distorts your skin's true shade. So what’s one to do? Take a selfie in some good old fashioned natural light! Wait for a clear day, and take a selfie with no makeup (but don’t skip the sunscreen) and use this as a reference when you choose from the swatch line-up.  And important tip: don’t take the selfie in the late afternoon or evening. Sunlight in the later part of the day, or “golden hour,” is going to have a significantly warmer, more orangey tone to it, and while it’ll make your skin look gorgeous in photos, it’s not going to be very helpful for finding your shade.

Titanium Dioxide & Zinc Oxide We know how much damage the sun can do on our skin; that’s why using sun protection is crucial. But we also want to make sure that our SPF is safe for our oceans and reefs. Also, this is where titanium dioxide and zinc oxide come in! These two minerals tend to be the active ingredients in physical sunscreens, as they protect our skin from the sun without causing irritation. These are also key in mineral foundations, which are far more gentle on the skin than traditional foundations.

Actives: The Key to Foolproof Skincare

by KR Bautista on Feb 23 2021
If you’ve ever felt dissatisfied with your foolproof skincare, you’re not alone. In the beauty industry, all too many beauty brands offer products at exorbitant prices--the kinds in beautiful packaging with big promises. And yet, the most they end up doing is add another pretty jar to your bathroom sink. And the fact of the matter is this: good skincare has nothing to do with how many dollars you dropped on it.This is because when it comes to foolproof skincare, formulas are everything! While formulas consist of multiple complexities, let's focus on one of their most crucial features: actives. What Are Actives? So you may now be wondering: what exactly are actives?Actives, proven to transform skin at a cellular level, renew, repair, protect, and hydrate from the cellular level.Actives are natural ingredients, which means we find them already occurring in nature--most often from plants. Fortunately, all our favorite actives are plant-based! Niacinamide Also referred to as nicotinamide or vitamin B3, niacinamide is an active that works to visibly diminish the appearance of large pores, smooth out skin texture, polish up dullness, and soften fine lines and wrinkles. As a water-soluble vitamin, niacinamide works with the natural substances in your skin, making it less likely to cause a reaction or any kind of irritation.Niacinamide also works wonders for the skin by repairing damage and improving the barrier, which shields the skin from environmental damage, so that your skin stays more radiant over time. Alpha-Hydroxy Acids AHAs are short for “alpha-hydroxy acids,” and come from plant sources like sugar cane, tomatoes, and pineapple, and come in the form of a few different ingredients, like malic acid and glycolic acid.AHAs have a number of benefits, but they may be most noted for their exfoliating properties, which means that they’re exceptionally good at sloughing off dead skin cells by dissolving the retained bonds underneath. This helps reveal skin that’s soft and glowing, making them especially useful for those with dry skin and hyperpigmentation.Because of their exfoliating nature, it’s usually best to only use them about 2-3 times a week, and as is the case with all skincare, make sure to wear SPF during the day. AHAs also pair well with our next active: BHAs. Beta-Hydroxy Acids BHAs, also known as “beta-hydroxy acids,” are exceptional especially for the purpose of fighting acne. In fact, you may be familiar with one of the most popular BHAs: salicylic acid! BHAs penetrate pores, binding with sebum and bacteria, reducing clogs, blemishes, blackheads, and acne. BHAs are most fit for normal to oily skin types, but they’re also allowable for those with sensitive skin due to their gently exfoliating properties. When using BHAs, like AHAs, apply SPF during the day and limit usage to once every 7-10 days.   Retinol Retinol, also known as “vitamin A,” is one of the actives most associated with anti-aging because of its ability to encourage skin cell renewal, it’s highly regarded as a powerful acne fighter. It has various forms: OTC like Retinol, Retinal, Retinoid, and Retinaldehyde, and stronger advice like Adapalene, Retin-A, and Tretinoin. As a powerful ingredient, it’s important to understand that retinol can come with some side effects like irritation and sensitivity. By taking specific care, you can reduce or avoid these side effects. Following up with a moisturizer is key, as retinol can cause some drying. And because it can cause photosensitivity, (once again) using SPF during the daytime is always encouraged when using retinol. For retinol starter, start slowly, using it once a week to assess your skin's response. Over time, you can work up to using retinol for your skin up to three times per week. Vitamin C As another anti-aging ingredient, vitamin C has a reputation as the active that’ll give your skin an instant glow. Vitamin C boosts collagen and elastin production for firm, elastic skin. Vitamin C reduces sunspots, dark circles, fine lines, and wrinkles, for daily or other use. It also comes in many forms, but L-ascorbic acid is best avoided. Purest vitamin C: potent but unstable when opened.

Do you use any kinds of tools (planner, vision board, bullet journal, etc.)?“I always use a planner with some special color-coding and different colored post-it’s for lists each week! I love it!” How important is a morning routine for you? What’s your morning routine like, and how do you handle the more hectic days? “Morning routines are SO important, especially with my kids and getting everyone ready! When we are rushed, I tend to focus on just making my skin clean & even toned.” How has your beauty/hair routine changed since the start of 2020? “I have definitely started using less makeup and focusing on taking care of my skin! Since we don’t go out much, I don’t wear makeup every day as I used to, but I do still try to wear it a few times a week because I enjoy it! Hair has also been more of a focus and trying to find ways to do it that are quick, easy and look good!” 2020 made us all a little more aware of how we dress in our homes. As someone who’s passionate about fashion, have you found a go-to outfit that keeps you productive at home while still feeling your best? “I love my jeggings that are both comfortable and also make me feel like I need to get things done! Most of the time though, I’m wearing leggings!” We understand that essential oils are a big part of your daily life! Can you share with us some of your favorite blends, and when you like to use them? “My go-tos for essential oils are Thieves (spicy-blend) for helping with keeping the air fresh and clean, peppermint, lavender & lemon! What advice can you give new moms in 2021 about balancing work life, motherhood, and self-love? “You have to make time for yourself somehow!!! I’ve realized that taking just a few hours to do something for me—whether that’s read a book, do my hair and makeup or grab a coffee and go for a drive—makes a huge difference in my mood and mindset. You have to love yourself most to be your best self for your kids and family.” Can you tell us one thing from 2020 you’re planning to keep in 2021? “I’m going to keep enjoying more family time! Having my husband home more and spending time as a family has been a huge blessing!”  Can you tell us one thing you’re ready to let go of in 2021? “I’m ready to let go of negativity and anxiety—this year I’m life one day at a time and keeping things in mind to look forward to!” Finally, name one specific thing that makes your daily life easier.  “Routines!
