How to Build a Minimalist Skincare Routine

by Michelle Doan on Dec 29 2024
A minimalist skincare routine focuses on using fewer but highly effective products to maintain a healthy skin barrier. It’s about simplifying your routine while still addressing your skin’s basic needs: cleansing, moisturizing, and protecting. If you’re looking to reduce the number of essential products you use without compromising results, here’s a step-by-step minimalist skincare routine guide to building an efficient, simple skincare routine for healthy skin. 1. Assess Your Skin Type and Needs Before creating a minimalist skincare routine, it’s important to understand your skin type and specific concerns. Your skincare routine should cater to your skin’s unique needs—whether it’s dryness, oiliness, sensitivity, acne, or fine lines. Normal skin: You don’t need too many products—just the basics to maintain a healthy skin barrier. Dry skin: Focus on hydration and barrier repair. A skincare routine for dry skin should include hyaluronic acid to replenish moisture and protect against damage. Oily skin: Look for products that control oil production and prevent breakouts without over-drying. A routine for oily skin should aim to balance your natural oils. Combination skin: Balance products to target both dry and oily areas. Sensitive skin: Choose gentle skincare products for sensitive skin, avoiding harsh chemicals or fragrances that can exacerbate skin conditions. 2. Keep It Simple: The Core Steps A simple skincare routine for healthy skin generally includes just 3 to 5 essential steps. Each step should serve a clear purpose, and the products should be effective on their own without needing additional layers. Step 1: Cleanser A gentle, hydrating cleanser is the first step in your daily routines. It removes dirt, oil, and makeup without stripping the skin’s natural oils, which can harm the skin barrier. For dry skin: Choose a creamy or hydrating cleanser with ingredients like hyaluronic acid or ceramides. For oily skin: A gel-based or foaming cleanser with salicylic acid can help manage excess oil production. For sensitive skin: Opt for soothing, fragrance-free cleansers with ingredients like aloe vera or chamomile. Step 2: Moisturizer Moisturizing is crucial for maintaining a healthy skin barrier, even if you have oily skin. For dry skin: Choose a rich, emollient moisturizer with hyaluronic acid, ceramides, or shea butter to lock in hydration. For oily skin: Use a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer or a gel-based formula that won’t clog pores. For sensitive skin: Look for high-quality, soothing ingredients like aloe vera or calendula to prevent irritation. Step 3: Sunscreen (AM Only) Sunscreen is the most important step in any skincare routine, offering protection from harmful UV rays that accelerate aging and damage your skin barrier. Look for the best sunscreen for everyday skincare with SPF 30 or higher. For dry skin, hydrating sunscreens containing hyaluronic acid can provide added moisture. For oily skin, non-comedogenic, oil-free sunscreens are a must. Step 4: Treatment (Optional) If you have specific concerns like acne, pigmentation, or fine lines, you can include one treatment product. For acne: Use a product with salicylic acid to exfoliate dead skin cells and prevent breakouts. For pigmentation: Brightening serums with vitamin C or niacinamide can help. For fine lines: A retinol or peptide serum can improve skin texture and elasticity. 3. Choose Multi-Tasking Products To keep your routine streamlined, look for high-quality products that serve multiple purposes: Cleansing balms that double as makeup removers. Moisturizers with built-in SPF, perfect for busy schedules. Serums that combine hydration and anti-aging benefits like vitamin C or hyaluronic acid. 4. Stick to Simple Ingredients Minimalism also means focusing on straightforward, effective ingredients that improve the skin barrier without overwhelming your skin. Hydrating ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, glycerin, ceramides Soothing ingredients: Aloe vera, chamomile, niacinamide Exfoliants: Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) to remove dead skin cells 5. Consistency is Key In a minimalist skincare routine, consistency matters. Stick to your routine and avoid overloading your skin with unnecessary products. Example of a simple skincare routine for healthy skin: AM Routine: Cleanser: Gentle hydrating cleanser for your skin type. Moisturizer: Lightweight or rich, depending on your hydration needs. Sunscreen: The best sunscreen for everyday skincare, suited to your skin type. PM Routine: Cleanser: Removes makeup and dirt. Treatment: (Optional) Retinol or an acne treatment. Moisturizer: Night cream or oil for hydration. Benefits of a Minimalist Approach to Skincare Time-Saving: A simple skincare routine for healthy skin is perfect for a busy schedule. Cost-Effective: Using fewer products makes it a cost-effective way to maintain glowing, healthy skin. Less Irritation: Streamlined routines reduce the risk of reactions, especially for sensitive skin. Clarity and Consistency: Minimalism encourages sticking to your routine, making it easier to achieve long-term results. A minimalist skincare routine doesn’t mean sacrificing quality or results. By focusing on the essentials—cleansing, moisturizing, and sun protection—you can build an effective skincare routine for glowing skin using fewer products.

Best Mascara and Lashes Guide

by KR Bautista on Aug 14 2024
Tips and Tricks for Healthy and Beautiful Lashes Mascaras come in all shapes, sizes, and formulas, each designed to give you a different lash look - from long and luscious to full and flirty. With so many options out there, how do you choose the one that’s just right for you? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! In this guide, we’ll break down the different types of mascaras, what they do, and how to select the best one to enhance your eye makeup routine. Get ready to unveil the secrets to stunning lashes and let your eyes do the talking! 🌟👁️💫 How to Choose the Right Mascara Mascaras come in various types, each designed to achieve different effects. Understanding the differences can help you choose the right mascara for your desired look. Here’s a breakdown of the most common types of mascaras: 1. Lengthening Mascara Purpose: Adds length to your lashes without adding much volume. Features: Often contains fibers or polymers that coat and extend the lashes. Best For: Those with shorter lashes or who want a more natural, elongated look. 2. Volumizing Mascara + Lash Serum Purpose: Increases the thickness and fullness of your lashes. Features: Typically has a thicker formula and a brush designed to coat each lash more fully. Best For: Those who want fuller, more dramatic lashes with added volume. 3. Curling Mascara Purpose: Adds curl to your lashes, making them look more lifted. Features: Contains curling agents and often has a specially designed brush that helps lift the lashes as you apply the product. Best For: Those with straight or downward-facing lashes who want a curl without using an eyelash curler. 4. Waterproof Mascara Purpose: Resists water, sweat, and tears, making it ideal for long wear or in humid conditions. Features: Formulated with water-resistant ingredients that help the mascara stay put. Best For: Those who need long-lasting wear or have watery eyes. It’s also useful for special occasions like weddings. 5. Smudge-Proof Mascara Purpose: Designed to prevent smudging and transferring throughout the day. Features: Typically has a long-wearing formula that sets well. Best For: Those who struggle with mascara smudging or transferring under the eyes. 6. Fiber Mascara Purpose: Adds both length and volume by using tiny fibers that adhere to the lashes. Features: Contains microfibers that attach to lashes, making them appear longer and fuller. Best For: Those looking for dramatic, voluminous, and elongated lashes. 7. Mascara for Sensitive Eyes Purpose: Formulated to be gentle on sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers. Features: Free from harsh chemicals and fragrances that could irritate sensitive eyes. Best For: Those with sensitive eyes or those who wear contact lenses. Start with nailing down exactly what you want from your mascara. Maybe you want your eyelashes to look longer. Perfect look for a lengthening mascara. Maybe your lashes are long enough, but you're hoping to make them fuller or hold a curl. Be on the lookout for a volumizing mascara. Now, let’s say you want both longer, fuller lashes. In that case, you’re going to want to pay attention to the sharp of the mascara wand, because that can also tell you a lot. Let’s take our Healthy Lash Mascara for instance. We've talked a lot about this product before, but believe us when we say it’s worth the hype. If you’ve tried this mascara or have had your eye on it for a while, you probably noticed the unique hourglass-shaped brush. This shape is the perfect choice to create that very false eyelash effect. They’ll be fuller, longer and hold a curl all day long. Honestly, what more can you ask for? Best Application Tips Ever Every morning it’s the same routine: Eyes wide, mouth open and a sweep of the mascara wand. If you really want to get the most of your mascara, the trick is all in the application. For foolproof mascara application, start by opening your eyes slightly wider than normal and looking up slightly. This should position your eye - and therefore, your lashes! - in the perfect position. Pick up your mascara wand and position it as close to the lash line as you can. Then, sweep it up to the tips while gently wiggling the wand back and forth. Sure, it might seem strange, but this will help ensure your lashes are fully coated. Two or three coats is really all you need. Any more than that, and you’re running the risk of clumps. How To Apply Mascara On Lower Lashes Start at the Base: Gently place the mascara wand at the base of your lower lashes. Wiggle the wand slightly to ensure that the mascara is applied evenly from root to tip. Use Light Strokes: Apply the mascara using short, light strokes. Avoid applying too much product to prevent clumping and smudging. Separate Lashes: If you find that the lashes are clumping together, use a clean spoolie or lash comb to separate them while the mascara is still wet. While you can definitely find mascaras with special small wands for coating the tinier eyelashes along your lower lid, the best application trick is to simply hold the wand perpendicular (that means straight up and down!) and dance it along your lash line in short quick strokes to avoid smudging any product on your skin. Perfect babydoll eyes, and no fuss needed! Staying Safe Studies have shown that most people don’t pay attention to the longevity of their makeup. While we can understand wanting to save money, you definitely should know that hanging onto products like mascara for too long can actually put your health at risk!  Whatever mascara you regularly use, it should be replaced every three months. That’s generally how long the average tube lasts before the product inside starts to dry out. But this timeframe also helps to minimize the risk of harmful bacteria that can grow inside the tube. This kind of bacteria can cause unpleasant eye infections, so it’s really not something you want to mess around with. Another important safety tip: You should avoid any “pumping” motions with the mascara wand when you’re applying the product. At best, this can dry out the product faster, meaning clumpy spider lashes (Yikes!). At worst, however, it can cause any harmful bacteria to grow even faster. Instead, use a gentle twirling motion to pick up the product on the bristles of the mascara wand. Trust us, you’ll get the same amount with each use and keep your eyes safe and healthy at the same time. Do you have any tried-and-true mascara tips or tricks? Sound off in the comments below!

Should I Self-Tan?

by KR Bautista on May 16 2023
Self-tan for a healthy, bronzy glow in summer. Achieve a radiant look with Emani's tips for a flawless, sun-kissed complexion. An even, sun-kissed tan is truly the trademark of a summer well spent. But unfortunately, it can also speed up our age process quite dramatically. In fact, sun exposure is one of the biggest contributors to premature aging, right alongside smoking cigarettes! But thanks to sunless tanning, no one has to sacrifice youthful-looking skin for that summer goddess glow. Or do they? In this blog, we’re going to go beyond skin-deep on sunless tanner, how it works, and answer one major question: can sunless tanning age skin, too??? How Does Sunless Tanner Work?   Have you ever wondered how a sunless tanner actually works? Many women believe that sunless tanners create a fake pigment on the skin, but it’s actually more complicated than that. In order to understand sunless tanning, it’s key that we understand the active ingredient: dihydroxyacetone, also known as DHA. DHA is a simple chain of carbohydrates, and it can be extracted from beets and cane sugar. In other words, it’s vegan! In order to mimic the look of tanned skin, DHA interacts with amino acids on our epidermis, creating a pigment called melanoidins, which appear brown in color because of the light wavelengths they absorb. This interaction is what’s known as the “Maillard reaction,” and it takes about 2-4 hours for it to affect the appearance of our complexion and create a beautiful, temporary tan. And as the outermost layer of skin cells naturally shed from the body, the tan will naturally fade after about 7-10 days. Does Self-Tanning Age the Skin? While the Maillard reaction requires no sun exposure in order to occur, it does possess something of a dark side. Research shows that the Maillard reaction causes the development of free radicals, which are unstable molecules that are known to latch onto and deteriorate the collagen and elastin fibers. The result is oxidative stress, and like rust on a bike, it weakens the skin and can make it age more rapidly. Moreover, concerning findings reveal that this accelerated free radical production intensifies under sunlight exposure. Self-Tanner vs. Sun Tanning   Understanding sunless tanner's link to free radicals might make you consider returning to sun exposure. However, we don’t advise that you do that, because here’s the thing: sunless tanner may still pose the safer option. Because when you sunbathe, it’s important to consider just how dangerous UV exposure is. Sun tanning stimulates skin to create melanin, the pigment responsible for the tan color, in response to UV rays. Producing a tan aside, it's also actively damaging your skin cells, increasing the risk of skin cancer and hastened aging. In short, the potential damage caused by suntanning is still far worse than the free radicals caused by DHA. The Bottom Line We all want the best of both worlds, and in this case, it’s the perfect self-tan and timeless, unchanging skin.  And while sunless tanning is never going to be a method that’s completely without its aging potential, it is still a far better option than UV exposure. Not to mention that self-tanner keeps us from getting that farmer’s tan! For those who really don’t want to risk it, do neither! Your skin is beautiful with or without a tan, and it’s going to thank you for going easy on it this year. But for those who simply must have that bronzy look, make sure to drink plenty of fluids and use SPF whenever you self-tan.

The Best Way to Treat Sunburn Naturally

by KR Bautista on Jul 26 2021
Sun protection is something we all need to take seriously: we’re often reminded to wear SPF, bring a hat, and stay in the shade whenever possible. But sometimes, our sun protection isn’t perfect. For instance, we may forget to reapply sunscreen, or skip it altogether, or we’re not wearing a formula that’s strong enough. Bottom line: sunburn happens sometimes, and it’s never fun.  And like any wound or irritation on our skin, time is going to be a factor. However, there are natural ways to help speed up the healing process. With summer in full swing, we’re going to break down what to do in each stage of sunburn. 1. Sun Exposure It’s probably no surprise to anyone that sunburn starts with sun exposure.  And sun exposure can happen fast. If you’re in direct sunlight without sunscreen, sunburn can actually occur in as little as 15 minutes!Catching sunburn early on can be tricky though, because it’s not as prominent as it will be in the next few hours. That’s why prevention is so important when it comes to sunburn. So always wear SPF, even if it’s for a quick walk with your dog, or to step out and grab your mail! 2. Here Comes The Burn Typically, sunburns aren’t too obvious at first, but they’ll probably make their presence known in the next 2 hours. As your skin cells on the surface become inflamed, skin appears red, and feels irritated and hot to the touch, marking the onset of sunburn. In the first few hours of sunburn, the most important thing to do is hydrate and take measures to cool down, since your skin is going to draw fluids from the body to heal itself. 3. Sore, Burning Skin After about 6 hours, sunburn will typically become sore and may sting more intensely, and blisters may form as the immune system protects the skin. Your skin may also feel more sensitive to heat, especially in a hot shower or bath. For the next few days, use lukewarm water and soothing ingredients to ease irritation: Chamomile Chamomile’s been used for centuries in folk medicine for their soothing effects, high antioxidant content, and sweet, delicate scent. Aloe Vera Aloe vera may be one of the most classic ingredients for treating sunburn, and for good reason! Aloe vera, with its hydrating and anti-inflammatory properties like aloin, can soothe and cool sunburn effectively. Green Tea Green tea is another classic ingredient for soothing inflammation. It's skin-friendly and packed with antioxidants like tannic acid and theobromine, which can boost damaged, irritated skin. 4. The Peeling After about 48 hours, most sunburns will feel significantly less uncomfortable than those initial 6 hours as the skin sheds off those dead, damaged cells to reveal the new ones underneath. Unfortunately, that means your skin is going to peel a bit, and it may be tempting to pick at the dead skin. However, experts recommend that you don’t do this, as it may risk more irritation. Instead, allow the process to ride itself out and support it with a good moisturizer. For a lot of people, this is the hardest phase, not only because the process is so close to being over, but the urge to pick can be intense. Your skin is working double-time to heal itself, so be patient with it and be kind to yourself.

Causes of Acne

by KR Bautista on Apr 29 2021
When we were teenagers, acne was a fact of life. If you didn’t have at least one day when you were fumbling around your locker looking for concealer, you were a lucky teen, indeed.  But what about when you experience acne in your 30s or your 40s? Wait a second, I thought I was done with this! As frustrating as it is, adult acne is actually extremely common. According to one study, as much as 22% of women in the United States experience acne, while men make up only 3%. And while some women are lucky enough to find that “miracle product” for their skin, it simply doesn’t work like that for everyone. There are a number of reasons why you’re experiencing acne in your adult life, and we want you to know that it’s not because you have poor hygiene, and it’s not your fault. If you’re experiencing persistent acne, consulting your doctor or dermatologist is always the best course of action. However, it may be possible that a lifestyle factor is the cause of your acne, meaning it could be something you have control over. Common Causes Of Acne Let's discuss common acne causes and how to regain your skin's clarity! Remember: Clearing skin takes time, but it's valuable to progress gradually and learn your skin's future responses. Hormonal Changes If you’re experiencing blemishes along the jawline that are deep and feel sore to the touch, it’s very possible that you’re experiencing hormonal acne. Hormonal acne occurs when there’s an increase in androgens in the body, leading to the sebaceous glands producing more sebum and the pores increasing in size. And while hormonal acne is often associated with adolescence, women can experience it well into their 30s and 40s. It’s normal for anyone to experience hormonal acne, but if you’re experiencing it frequently, it’s heavily encouraged to consult your doctor or dermatologist. Consulting a professional can uncover your hormonal imbalance's source. Medications like birth control or prescription retinol might effectively address it. You’re Over-Washing Your Face In the past, people believed that maintaining a clean face was crucial to prevent acne, and they would blame insufficient washing if acne was present. However, this is actually not true; in fact, over-washing your face can strip your skin of the natural oils that keep it healthy and hydrated. And when your skin becomes stripped, this can actually cause the oil glands to kick into overtime, resulting in excess oil and clogged pores. Diet During your teenage years, you might have received warnings that chocolate could cause acne. While not entirely accurate, studies suggest specific foods, especially carb-rich ones like bagels, bread, and chips, might exacerbate acne. And while the research is limited, it has been suggested that dairy may induce acne in some individuals. Mucous-producing foods, like this one, can strain digestion, especially for lactose-intolerant individuals, potentially triggering cystic acne. Suspect dietary link to acne? Skip the food in question to gauge impact on skin. Experiment wisely. Remember: while your acne may not immediately clear up, it’s still a good sign if it doesn’t worsen! Stress If you’ve been feeling extra stressed out lately, stress may be behind your worsening breakouts. While stress isn’t necessarily a direct cause of acne, it certainly isn’t helping it. Research indicates stress delays wound healing, including acne recovery. Prioritize relaxation for healthier skin. When pimples heal slowly, they remain on the skin longer, risking the chance of only getting worse. Handling stress isn't simple—during big projects or life changes like moving, feeling overwhelmed is natural. But during these times, practicing stress management strategies can be extremely helpful. Prioritize self-care during stress: meditate, exercise, indulge in hobbies. Ensure ample sleep. Your well-being matters. When in doubt, talk to your physician. The team at Emani is all about helping others to live a healthier and happier life. Leave a comment, we'd love to hear from you.

Self-Care for Busy Women

by KR Bautista on Jan 21 2021
At this point, the concept of self-care is no foreign thing; it’s become a widely discussed topic in tutorials, articles and TV shows everywhere. And yet, self-care is no easy thing to master, especially when you’re just too busy. For women who are used to a day that’s “go, go, go,” the idea of slowing down and taking time just for yourself can be quite alien, if not impossible. But we’re here to tell you it doesn’t have to be that way. While self-care can be a full day of spa treatments, it can also be as simple as a few mindful activities. Here are 6 ways you can practice self-care every single day, no matter what it throws at you! 1. Shower Meditation Let’s be honest: morning showers have always been great. Not only are you surrounded by hot, soothing water and steam, but it’s one of the few times of the day in which you’re truly alone. So why not make the most of this moment?Next time you’re having a morning rinse, try a quick shower meditation! There are tons of meditation guides on the internet for you to try, but here’s a simple one to start with: Close your eyes and allow yourself to clear your mind, simply enjoying the feeling of the water around you. Focus on the way your breathing feels in this moment. Is it filling your chest? Is it going down to your belly? Can you feel the air itself as it travels through your body? Now, try controlling your breathing. Slowly inhale for 5 seconds, then exhale for 5 seconds, and hold your breath for 5 seconds more before repeating the pattern. Allow yourself to carry out this exercise for a few minutes, before coming back to yourself in the shower. Take a moment of awareness before stepping out and getting dressed. 2. Make Your Beauty Routine For You It’s easy for the act of getting ready for the day to feel like a drag. I need to shower, get the kids dressed, get lunch together AND I need to put on my makeup?!Look at it this way, though: your beauty routine is one of the few times of the day when it’s just you and your reflection, so make the most of it in any way you can!One of the best things you can do for yourself at this time is choose makeup you’re not only excited to put on, but will enjoy wearing all day long! For instance, a primer that’s silicone-free and uses lots of skin-loving ingredients is going to greatly help you foundation wear, and it’s going to make your makeup feel a lot more comfortable throughout the day. And choosing a lipstick with a nourishing formula will both glide on beautifully and nourish your lips throughout the day.Makeup aside, your morning beauty routine is a great time to consider the day ahead of you, and the bathroom mirror is a fantastic place for morning mantras! Here are a few examples you can start out with. Try writing them down on sticky notes and leave them in places you know you’ll see them in the morning: I will not worry about the things I can’t control I am allowed to take up space I trust that my faith in the universe will gift me with all that I need in life I like who I am becoming I add something special to this world 3. Don’t Forget To Move! If you spend a lot of your day at your desk, don’t forget to move every once in a while!  It can be very tempting to strap in at your desk and just focus on the project until it’s done, but this could actually just hurt your productivity in the long run.Movement is so crucial to us as humans, as it promotes blood flow, muscle building, self-care, and for joints and bones to strengthen. And all of this is key to healthy brain function! There are plenty of strategies and tools to help you get up and move a little throughout a busy work day: a growing number of individuals are adopting fitness trackers that go on your wrist, but even a reminder on your smartphone every hour will do the trick! 4. Incorporate Aromatherapy The space you work in absolutely matters, and sometimes it comes down to the little things--in this case, the way your workspace smells. If possible, we recommend that you invest in aromatherapy while you work, whether it’s a diffuser with some essential oils, a scented candle, or some incense. We recommend citrus and peppermint while you work, as they can help revitalize the senses and help you feel energized. 5. Create A Beginning & End-of-Day Ritual This tip is especially for those who work from home, but it’s paramount to those who work anywhere.Sometimes, work feels like it’s all over the place: sometimes you’re running late, sometimes you have to start work with a not-so-great morning behind you, and you’re just not in the right headspace. Then 8 hours later, you say you’re finished for the day, then you ease into your couch, browse your smartphone, and hey look: you have an email from work. You should just answer that now, right? And the next thing you know, it’s like you never really got off! When you have a ritual to your work schedule, though, you have a clearer head, whether you’re on or off. Before you begin your work day, some of the following steps can build a cohesive beginning-of-day ritual: Have coffee Turn on your computer Check your calendar Set up any aromatherapy for the day Check emails once and at a designated time (big timesaver)  Likewise, an end-of-day ritual gives you a clear stop to the work day, and makes it easier to unwind and recharge. This can include the following: Review tomorrow Clean off your desk Have a glass of water Change into more comfortable clothing 6. Designate Some Evening Skincare Time There are some things we were able to get away with when we were 19, but just won’t fly now, and one of those things includes the way we removed our makeup. These days, the swipe of a makeup wipe won’t cut it. Not only are you still leaving residue behind, but this does nothing to help your skin recover from the day!Instead, take 10 minutes out of your evening to focus on a skincare routine; one where you thoroughly cleanse your face and incorporate hydrating, nourishing, and anti-aging products into your skin. This is also a great time to fully unwind and enjoy some quiet time before bed.And the best thing about a skincare routine? It’s only as simple or elaborate as you want it to be! For many women, a skincare routine involves a double cleanse, followed by a toner, sheet mask, treatments and night cream. And for many others, it’s a thorough cleansing followed by moisturizer.  If you’ve never used a self-care skincare routine before, starting out simple may be the best way to go, but just make sure your skin has some kind of hydration on it before bed. Emani Ambassador: Jamie Keeps Her Beauty Routine Convenient & Kind with Natural Ingredients

by KR Bautista on Jan 14 2021
If you’ve ever had to navigate the balance between caring for yourself and keeping everything running smoothly, you’re not alone! Prioritizing self-care can be a challenge, especially when you work a leadership role that can be demanding.  As a mom of 3 young boys, for example, Jamie finds balance in a few ways: for one, she incorporates wellness and self-care into taking care of her family. Finding Balance: Jamie's Self-Care Journey and Beauty Routine “Essential oils are a HUGE part of my life and my family’s lifestyle! A few of my favorites are Lavender, Frankincense, Lemon, Peppermint & Lemongrass. I also use them as part of my skincare routine (geranium, tea tree, lavender with jojoba oil serum).” But it’s also important to take some time exclusively for you; after all, we take better care of those we love when we’re feeling our best. And for Jamie, a great way to practice this on the daily is through her beauty routine. “For makeup, I start with cleansing & moisturizing my face, primer, concealer & foundation, fill in eyebrows, contour with bronzer & apply mascara! I try to keep it quick & easy and just enhance my natural look.” Customized Skincare: Jamie's Journey To Healthy and Nourished Skin But when Jamie plans her beauty routine, she’s not just thinking about the way it’ll make her look, but how it’ll affect her skin. “My skin is oily/combination, and especially gets dry during the winter months! I have had breakouts from using products containing harsher chemicals in the past.” And Jamie knows that self-care through skincare doesn’t mean using expensive products just because it feels indulgent, self-care through skincare means using products that cater to your own needs. “Finding a brand that fits your skin’s needs is the first step! Emani Cosmetics works for mine with perfect primers and foundation that works with my skin to enhance it!” Efficiency and Quality: Jamie's Approach to Multifunctional Beauty Products Good ingredients foster a healthy glow, smooth the skin, and help soothe irritation (without causing more). Jamie’s favorite ingredients are the ones that do these things and come from nature...we’re right there with her! “I was very excited to see that the Perfect 10’s list was short and included ingredients that I recognized! I was especially happy to see Lemongrass essential oil and aloe vera!” It can be safely assumed that for most of us, multifunctional beauty routine is a must. And besides ingredients meant to help your skin, Jamie puts a big emphasis on efficiency & flexibility.  “Everything needs to be quick & easy! I used to use so many different products between skincare and makeup but now I have narrowed it down to products that contain all of the clean, healthy ingredients that I need but in fewer steps!” Sometimes, it can be difficult to find products that save time without cutting corners on quality, natural ingredients. At Emani, we’re here to help anyone who’s encountered those roadblocks, because first and foremost, makeup should promote confidence in your skin. Our skin is our largest organ and absorbs everything that is applied to it, and goes into our bloodstream! By using cleaner products, we are reducing the number of chemicals entering our bodies! If someone has tried a clean beauty brand and wasn’t happy with it, I’d say to give Emani Cosmetics a chance and they will be pleasantly surprised at the quality and coverage that these products supply while still being good for your skin!

Emani Ambassador: How Elizabeth Keeps Her Healthy Skin as a Flight Attendant!

by KR Bautista on Nov 02 2020
The Importance of Maintaining Healthy Skin in the Air Workplace factors can affect our healthy skin, regardless of the location. In Elizabeth’s case, she works in the air!Elizabeth is always on the move, working long shifts that take her all over the map. But a big part of her professionalism is taking time to get ready.“I’m more of a minimalist when I’m not at work, but I do enjoy glamming it up once in a while. I do have to wear makeup for work and that usually involves foundation, blush, eye shadow, eyeliner, and lipstick.” Skincare Routine: Maintaining Healthy Skin in the Air Elizabeth's makeup must endure long flights while safeguarding her healthy skin from dry plane air. Besides moisturizing and staying hydrated onboard, Elizabeth makes sure to take care of her body and mind. The magic word is self-care!“I like using hydrating face masks and I make sure to take my vitamins. Sleep, exercise, and hydration are also part of my self-care routine.” She loves using the Perfect 10 Primer Serum to keep her makeup lasting for long flights without dehydrating her skin. “It’s made it a lot easier. I now have one product that does various things. It’s really helped in hydrating my skin and helped combat bacteria especially now when having to wear a mask. My makeup wears for so much longer and I really feel natural and pretty.”And because space is limited on flights, it’s important to keep as many multi-tasking products on hand as possible: “Natural clean products are my favorite, especially if they have multiple uses.” The Power of Natural Ingredients: Enhancing Skin's Appearance with the Perfect 10 Primer Serum Not only does the Perfect 10 create a smooth surface for your foundation, but you can count on its natural lemongrass scent to give you an invigorating boost of aromatherapy. Definitely worth making the room for in your luggage! When she’s not working, Elizabeth likes to use the Perfect 10 Primer Serum for when she wants natural look.“I like wearing makeup but like looking as natural as possible; unless I’m glamming it up or going to work I don’t use foundation. I prefer something along the lines of a bb cream.”Whether you’re wearing BB cream, a foundation, tinted moisturizer, or nothing at all, it’s easy to encounter ingredients that hide or alter the appearance of your skin. But wouldn’t you rather use a primer that actually makes your skin look and feel better?"I feel that what you give is what you get. If I give my skin natural products with healing properties, my skin is going to get me some amazing results without using chemicals that can  mess up my skin in the long run.”

Overall, What’s Your Favorite Thing About It? My favorite thing about fall is the coziness of everything. The weather, the food, fuzzy blankets, and spending time with family. Can You Describe Your Favorite Go-to Fall Outfit? In Ohio, we experience all of the seasons. When summer turns to fall and the temperature is in the 60s to low 70s, it doesn’t get better than that. If I can wear a sweatshirt and cute ripped jeans but still need my sunglasses, that is the sweet spot for me. What’s Your Favorite Scent? Anything apple cider scented makes me think of it instantly. Favorite Indoor Fall Activity? Lighting a fall candle and snuggling with my kids to watch a movie we haven’t seen before. We pop some popcorn and set up the sleeping bags on the living room floor. It’s our favorite Friday night ritual. Favorite Outdoor Fall Activity? As a family, we love doing outdoor kids activities with apple cider slushies, kettle corn, and picking pumpkins. We have an amazing farm near us in Ohio that is packed with fun family events. We make a lot of amazing memories this time of year. What Is Your Go-to Fall Beverage? I love anything with caramel flavor so a coffee drink whether it’s hot or iced...load that caramel on there! What Music Do You Love On Fall Days? I love so many types of music. The fall makes me want to chill to some old favorite songs. Artists like Coldplay and Ed Sheeran are some of my go-tos. What’s Your Favorite Food To Make/eat During Fall Weather? The fall always makes me crave football party food. Like buffalo chicken dip. I also get a craving for soups. I love spicy chili and my mom’s potato soup. Of course, pumpkin pie always makes it in there. What’s Your Favorite Beauty Staple For The Fall? As soon as the weather gets cool I love doing black nail polish when I get a manicure. I am all about neutrals, and for me that includes black. I also make sure to add extra hydration treatments to my hair as we get into the drier midwest months. What’s Your Favorite Way To Unwind & Take Care Of Yourself During The Fall Season? As a photographer, the fall is my busy season so it’s an especially crazy time. I know when I have to unplug and get out from behind the computer to spend intentional time with my family. It helps me so much mentally when everything is “go go go”.

How Negativity Affects Our Skin

by KR Bautista on Sep 17 2020
Whether you’re working from home or getting back in the real world, it’s completely normal if you’re not quite like your normal self, and it’s also quite normal if your skin has been impacted by it. Be that as it may, we know it’s not fun, and it can remind you of your acne-prone teenage years, while some women who’ve never experienced negativity and problematic skin may be having issues for the very first time. In this article, we’re going to take a quick second to talk about how negativity, stress and sadness can impact our skin, and what we can do to break that cycle. How Sad Feelings Lead To Sad Skin Cortisol, also known as “the stress hormone,” is a hormone the body needs to regulate metabolism, immunity, and blood sugar levels, and it’s key in triggering the fight-or-flight response in times of stress. But when our bodies undergo frequent periods of stress, cortisol can cause inflammation, which is the primary trigger in eczema, psoriasis, and acne. And in the long run, inflammation in the skin can drastically contribute to the breakdown of collagen, which is one of the main “building blocks” in our skin and keeps it elastic and smooth. And this is one of the reasons why stress is so widely associated with rapid aging.Sadness can accelerate aging, leading to frown lines and skin issues. Long-term depression affects skin health, causing puffiness and dullness. How To Rehab Sad & Stressed-Out Skin If any of this resonates with you, you’re not alone. Over 10 million adults in the United States suffer from some form of stress-induced skin troubles. And even better news: it’s not beyond your control.Self-care is often mentioned, but it's about acts solely for yourself. Self-care isn't selfish. It rejuvenates you, enabling better support for your loved ones. And self-care includes a solid skincare routine; one that gives the hydration you need, while supplying antioxidants to help fight the pollution exposed to your skin.Dedicate time each evening for skin care, fostering therapeutic self-care and evening calm. It’s Okay To Not Be Okay Even the most effective skincare products aren’t going to reach their full potential when you’re under constant stress. That’s why it’s important to find the source of your stress so that you can learn how to manage it.This is something that may take some time, and it may be worth looking into with the help of a professional, but it really is something that can improve the quality of your skin and your overall outlook. As you explore how to take care of your stress levels, make sure to find the things in your day that promote feelings of positivity and warmth, and not feelings of negativity, anxiety or sadness. As a final note, remember that it’s okay to not always be okay. No need to love your skin 24/7. Don't hide stress or overwhelm. Embrace imperfections and self-care. In a world dominated by negativity and stress, relaxation can seem like a competitive effort. Recognize when you're not at your best to heal and emerge stronger.

the 5 Best Natural Ingredients for Treating Acne

by KR Bautista on Feb 25 2020
Treating acne and blemishes can sometimes feel like a fruitless endeavor. When you’re scanning the skincare section, the ingredient lists seem so daunting and confusing. What is this twenty-letter chemical listed on the label? And how is it supposed on treating acne? We hear you - that’s why we always strive for clean, natural ingredients. In fact, did you know the secret to a clear complexion can actually be hiding inside some all-natural ingredients - some of which you probably have at home in your kitchen? It’s true, and we have five natural ingredients in mind for treating acne. 1. Tea Tree Oil You might already be familiar with Tea Tree Oil but if you’re not, allow this to be your introduction. It’s sourced from the tea tree, a plant that’s native to Australia. In its essential oil state, it’s loaded with antibacterial and antifungal properties. Also think back to what causes acne and other unpleasant skin blemishes - it’s a buildup of bacteria inside the pores. In addition, try applying Tea Tree Oil diluted in a gentle lotion directly to your face, or look for it as a key ingredient in acne treatments and makeup. 2. Aloe Vera Ever got a sunburn? While not great, it happens to the best of us. But that’s how most people become acquainted with the soothing and healing benefits of Aloe Vera. Also, this cooling gel comes from the spiky aloe plant. Not only does it feel naturally smooth and comfortable on your skin, it can help decrease redness and heal skin irritation. Aloe Vera is pretty easy to find - you can likely even find it in its natural state in the produce section of the grocery store! 3. Honey Yes, we know what you’re thinking: I’m fine with putting a drizzle of honey in my tea, but on my FACE? Bear with us here: Honey is actually incredibly beneficial as a skincare ingredient. Not only is honey filled with antioxidants, it’s naturally antimicrobial. That yucky bacteria that can cause an acne breakout? Honey will make short work of it. Not only that, honey can help moisturize dry skin and clarify pores, which ensures your newly-clear complexion will stay glowing and smooth. Want to work honey into your skincare routine? It’s easy to whip up your own weekly mask with a mix of raw honey and plain yogurt. Spread on a thin layer, let sit for a few minutes (while you relax, of course!) then rinse. There’s never been a more delicious way to treat acne. 4. Green Tea Enjoy a cup of green tea every now and then? You’ll be happy to hear that your daily cuppa can actually be the secret to the clear, acne-free skin you crave. The dried tea leaves are rich with antioxidants which can help clarify your pores and promote a smooth complexion. Try making a mask with green tea leaves and honey or Aloe Vera and apply for a few minutes up to twice a week. 5. Coconut Oil We make no secret of the fact that we love Coconut Oil, here at Emani. It’s the best natural moisturizer we can find and it does wonders for acne-prone skin. If your acne is triggered by overly dry skin, Coconut Oil might be the soothing moisturizer you’re looking for. But like so many of our other favorite ingredients, it also naturally fights bacteria. Collectively, our Emani Team always has a tub of Coconut Oil in the bathroom to use as a daily moisturizer - and we think it might work for you too! Have you ever tried any of these natural ingredients? Let us know in the comments below!

The Difference Between Dry or Dehydrated Skin

by KR Bautista on Jan 15 2020
Have you been trying to combat that tight, stiff feeling in your skin? Is your skin extra oily? If so, you may be suffering from dry skin. Dry skin is a chronic, genetic skin condition you are born with, as opposed to dehydrated skin, which is caused by external factors. Today, we are sharing some information on the differences between dry skin vs. dehydrated skin. We’re showing you how to best treat and care for each type, as knowing the difference may make all the difference in your skincare routine. Why Treating Dry Or Dehydrated Skin Is Important? If your skin becomes overly dry or dehydrated, it may flake and crack, which can lead to bacteria in your skin, which may cause breakouts or skin irritations. Dry and or dehydrated skin is also more vulnerable to damaging free radicals, and more prone to premature aging because the skin's moisture barrier is compromised. If your skin is overly dry or oily, it’s pH level may be unbalanced, and it will begin to produce more oil to compensate, which may lead to increased breakouts. Dehydrated Skin Characteristics Dehydrated skin is a condition that develops from external factors like diet, environment, product choice. Dehydrated skin is usually lacking water and needs hydration. Dehydrated skin feels tight and itchy around the forehead and cheek areas. Anyone can experience dehydrated skin, as opposed to dry skin. Those with dehydrated skin may experience dark circles and bags under the eyes due to increased skin sensitivity. Dehydrated skin may appear intermittently. It can be based on climate, diet, hot water use, heating or air condition systems, and incorrect product use. How To Help Improve Dehydrated Skin Dehydrated skin is often mistaken as oily skin, due to the skin being overly dehydrated and producing excessive oil. As a result, many try to use products to dry out the skin and control oil production, which in turn only exasperates the issues. Dehydrated skin benefits from water-based moisturizers.   Dehydrated skin benefits from reduced alcohol and caffeine intake. Also try and avoid harsh products that strip the skin. Look for skincare and beauty products rich in water. In addition, hyaluronic Acid has the ability to hold up to 1,000 times its molecular weight in water, fortifying the skin's natural barriers by penetrating and infusing all layers of the skin with valuable, rejuvenation moisture. Aloe Vera is another super hydrating ingredient to look for. Dry Skin Characteristics Dry skin lacks sebum (oil) and requires moisture to maintain its health. Dry skin lacks a sufficient amount of lipids. Dry skin is a genetic skin type you are born with and will need to continuously treat, especially in colder climates. Dry skin is a chronic condition. Dry skin can also experience dehydration. How To Help Treat Dry Skin Dry skin benefits from products rich in oil. Dry skin benefits from increased water intake and facial oils/moisturizers.   Use a humidifier in your home.   Use lukewarm water to shower, and limit time in the shower. Avoid harsh products that strip the skin.  A healthy, balanced, and glowing complexion is something we all want. Knowing how to identify and treat specific skin types and conditions will help you to treat any skin issues and help to return your skin to balance. Knowing your skin type can also enable you to select products that enhance your complexion and do not irritate your skin.
